  • Patent number: 8906290
Abstract: A container for molten metal has at least one opening in which a refractory nozzle brick is mounted. A refractory purge plug or a refractory sleeve defining an outlet opening is inserted in the nozzle brick opening. A defined gap is formed between the nozzle brick opening and the purge plug or the sleeve and is filled with a refractory mass, this mass consisting of a material which can be easily bored or milled out of the mass for the purpose of replacing the purge plug or the sleeve. In this manner, laborious cleaning steps can be avoided and the nozzle brick no longer risks being damaged.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention relate to automatic sanding hopper systems and methods for supplying sand to a tap hole in a furnace. The automatic sanding hopper system may automatically open a chimney door to provide access to a furnace through a chimney hole. A hopper assembly in the sanding hopper system may automatically move to a position in which a plunger may automatically actuate to clear or clean out the chimney hole. The hopper assembly may thereafter automatically move to a position in which a sand dispenser delivers sand through the chimney hole, into the furnace, and into the tap hole in the furnace. A sensor device may determine whether or not the tap hole is properly filled with sand. The hopper assembly may automatically retract and the chimney door may automatically close to begin another steelmaking heat.

Abstract: A sealing plug 1, consisting of fireproof material 10 located between the upper shaping plate 19 and the lower shaping plate 20, is used to seal the tap hole 3 of a tiltable converter 2. Said fireproof material 10 consists of bonding clay, water, oil and other constituents, particularly of 10-30% by weight hollow glass balls made of “foam glass” produced from recovered glass which have a rough surface suitable for binding large volumes of moisture. The sealing plug 1 thus retains the necessary stability even over longer periods and can thus be shaped in the tap hole 3 so that it is arrested against the wall 28, even after longer periods of storage. The time of introduction of the plug sleeve is controlled based on measured parameters of the molten mass. The plug is introduced into the tap opening by guiding the plug with the metal rod or pipe through the molten mass in the metallurgical container. The plug sleeve changes by temperature action of the molten mass of metal such that the flowable material is distributed in the tap opening and seals the tap opening.

Abstract: A dart has a metal bar (1) passing through a ceramic, shaped, dart head (2) and then through a cylindrical ceramic dart stem (3). A sleeve (4) of a carbonaceous or reactive material is provided about the stem (3) or a layer of that material can be fed on the lower face (5) of the dart head (2) (at the interface of the steel and slag). A block or sleeve (6) of suitable reactive material could be positioned on the top face (7) of the dart. The reactive material could be cardboard or paper, or a reactive metal, such as aluminum or magnesium. In each case a chemical reaction with the molten steel will result in an updraft in the steel which clears slag from the area of the tap hole.

Abstract: The invention relates to a device for closing a tap hole of a metallurgical vessel, in particular a converter, for the purpose of separating a molten metal and slag, having a slag stopper 1, which is situated outside the vessel, which provides an actuable closure element 8 that can be inserted into a tap hole, leaving an annular gap relative to the wall of the tap hole, and which provides a number of lines, in particular a pressurized-gas line 10 intended for the supply of the closure element, the slag stopper 1 comprising a connecting frame 2, which carries and fixes the parts of the slag stopper, this connecting frame, for its part, being secured releasably at a connecting point 11 on the metallurgical vessel 12. This allows a significant reduction in the time required for servicing or changing the slag stopper.

Abstract: A device serves to seal the tap hole 10 of a tiltable converter with a sealing plug 8. The sealing plug 8 is characterised in particular by the composition of its material. Plastics material, preferably polystyrene foam in the shape of balls, serves therein, among other things, as material for the sealing plug 8. This gives the sealing plug 8 a considerably lower weight and above all guarantees more favourable deformation properties. The addition of the plastics material causes the sealing plug to melt or evaporate more quickly on impact by liquid steel, thus resulting in simpler and more precise handling of a converter.

  • Patent number: 5972281
Abstract: This invention concerns a process for the reliable avoidance of slag contamination of the converter tapping steel by flush slag. In accordance with the invention a plastic, workable stopper made of fire-proof material containing silicic and oxidic components as well as suitable binding agents is used for this purpose. The stopper is introduced so far into the tapping channel with the help of a setting device that its front surface, terminated with a funnel-shaped compression plate, almost aligns flushly with the interior side of the converter, and it fills in the diameter of the tapping channel as a result of being compressed, creating such a plane that the flush slag occurring during tipping of the converter is reliably directed past the tapping channel. Stopper systems used up to now had the disadvantage that age-dependent enlargements of the tapping channel had a detrimental effect on the functioning of the stopper.

Abstract: A process for closing a tap hole in a metallurgical vessel at least partially filled with a metal melt includes bringing a compressible fire-resistant material to the moth of a tubular closing element, providing a medium that substantially prevents contact between the fire resistant material and the metal melt, passing the closing element through the melt toward the bottom of the vessel, compressing the compressible material against the bottom of the vessel to form a seal between the outside of the closing element and the tap hole below the closing element, and moving a cut off device over the outside of the tap hole, thereby allowing the tap hole to be filled with a pourable refractory compound via the tubular closing element. • Patent number: 5820815
Abstract: A cooled elongated, preferably threaded and, tapered, metallurgical taphole plug and a method for using it are described. The plug is inserted into a taphole to cause a plug of molten material to freeze in the taphole such that molten material flow within the taphole is stopped. In one embodiment, the plug is comprised of an externally threaded, elongated member having a first end and a second end with a taper extending at least partially therebetween. The first, narrower end, which is inserted into the taphole, is cooled by a fluid flowing through an internal passage extending at least partially between the first and second ends. As the first end is cooled, the molten material adjacent the first end freezes around the tip of the first end, effectively plugging the taphole. The device is removed by discontinuing fluid flow and applying a rotational moment about the second end such that the threaded, tapered device backsout of the taphole.
