Patent number: 8942462Abstract: A method to automatically quantify dendrite arm spacing in dendritic microstructures. Once a location of interest in a cast material specimen has been identified, the information contained in it is automatically analyzed to quantify dendrite cell size information that is subsequently converted into a quantified dendrite arm spacing through an empirical relationship or a theoretical relationship. In one form, the relationship between DCS and DAS is such that the DAS in dendritic structure of cast aluminum alloys may be automatically determined from the measurement of one or more of dendrite cell size and the actual volume fraction of the eutectic phases in the local casting microstructure. Non-equilibrium conditions may be accounted for in situations where a theoretical volume fraction of a eutectic phase of the alloy in equilibrium condition is appropriately modified.Type: GrantFiled: February 4, 2013Date of Patent: January 27, 2015Assignee: GM Global Technology Operations LLCInventors: Qigui Wang, James W. Patent number: 8153050Abstract: The present invention provides a method of high efficient slag scooping-up from liquid iron and a device for implementing said method. The two wings of slag rake mounted to the front end of cantilever descend side by side until beneath the surface of the liquid iron at a certain depth. The two rakes make swing movement respectively along the surface of liquid iron. When gradually moving close to each other in the course of swing movement, they get put together and clamp the solid slag. Then, driven by the cantilever, the two slag rakes which clamp the sold slag are brought to ascend until above the surface at a certain height. Finally they leave the space over the ladle and discharge the slag. The deslagging rate can reach over 90%. It just takes less than 3 minutes for the whole process of slagging-off. Additionally, the iron carried away in the process of slagging-off could be greatly reduced. The iron loss rate can be strictly controlled within 0.1%.Type: GrantFiled: April 5, 2004Date of Patent: April 10, 2012Inventor: Fuchun Sheng

Patent number: 4978105Abstract: A steel mill system includes a metallurgical furnace and a further processing system such as a continuous casting system and/or one or more stations for treatment of the steel melt. At least one steel ladle is loaded with steel melt below the metallurgical furnace and is moved between the metallurgical furnace and the further processing system. The steel melt is then emptied into the further processing system. In the region of its upper half, the steel ladle is equipped with a carrying mechanism which includes diametrically oppositely disposed running wheels. The steel ladle is movable in a suspended position between the metallurgical furnace, and the further processing system on rails which are adapted to the carrying mechanism.Type: GrantFiled: August 25, 1989Date of Patent: December 18, 1990Assignee: Krupp Industrietechnik GmbHInventor: Peter Meierling

Patent number: 4966349Abstract: A supporting arrangement for casting ladles includes a stationarily mounted permanent base and a rotary base rotatably mounted relative to the permanent base. To each rotary base, a supporting bracket system is hinged via a linkage parallelogram system including pivotable guiding rods. Each supporting bracket system is liftable and lowerableby a pressure medium cylinder. In order to reduce the weight of the supporting arrangement and to facilitate any repair work to be done at the pressure medium cylinder, the supporting bracket system is composed of two independent supporting brackets, each supporting bracket independently being hinged to a lower and an upper guiding rod of the linkage parallelogram system. The upper guiding rods of the linkage parallelogram system, on their ends facing away from the rotary base, are united by a cross beam to a rigid unit U-shaped in ground plan.Type: GrantFiled: February 14, 1990Date of Patent: October 30, 1990Assignee: Voest-Alpine IndustrienlagenbauInventors: Werner Scheurecker, Ronald Spannlang, Istvan Kalmar, Manfred Leutgob, Armin Schertler
