Patent number: 8371845Abstract: A head-mountable flashback arrestor for a gas torch having body, head, and tip sections. The head-mountable flashback arrestor may be disposed in a variety of gas torches, such as cutting torches, welding torches, heating torches, and so forth. The flashback arrestor also may embody a variety of filtering mechanisms, such as a porous metal structure. For example, the porous metal structure may be sintered from a metal particulate, such as a stainless steel powder, to form a non-linear or random flow pattern.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 2002Date of Patent: February 12, 2013Assignee: Illinois Tool Works Inc.Inventor: Robert W. Patent number: 5700421Abstract: A novel cutting nozzle assembly for a postmixed oxygen-fuel gas torch is disclosed. The nozzle assembly includes a cylindrical shroud which surrounds and extends away from the gas discharge orifices in the gas discharge end of the cutting nozzle. The cylindrical shroud has the advantage of producing a tighter gas stream and of promoting a more thorough mixing of the preheat oxygen and the fuel gas to provide a hotter, more compact flame which produces a more parallel-sided cut through metal workpieces. The cutting tip therefore conserves metal as well as cutting gases. It also cuts faster than prior art postmixed cutting nozzles.Type: GrantFiled: November 25, 1992Date of Patent: December 23, 1997Inventor: Claude Bissonnette

Patent number: 4585409Abstract: An improved heating torch having the usual fuel and oxygen passageways and valves for controlling the flow of the respective components, mixer for mixing fuel and oxygen, and tip for flowing the admixture exteriorly thereof for burning to heat a work piece or the like, the improvement being characterized by a multiple piece tip that is spring loaded such that one or more internals can be spring loaded to be retained within a shell that is affixed to an end piece of the tip. The end piece fastens to the end of an elbow connected with the mixer, and has the shell disposed about the end piece; and one or more tip internals are disposed inside and biased toward their normal assembled position by a spring or the like. Different sized heating tips are readily formed by simply adding internals and larger sized end pieces and shells to form one or more rings of grooves defined by splines that can be easily manufactured and assembled.Type: GrantFiled: August 27, 1984Date of Patent: April 29, 1986Assignee: Victor Equipment CompanyInventor: David A. Patent number: 4190121Abstract: A thermal drilling device which operates in a rotary or circumferentially oscillatory motion and which is particularly adapted for drilling geological formations comprises a drill body which has an interior combustion chamber with a bottom having an outlet defining a discharge nozzle. Means are provided for adding fuel components into the combustion chamber and for igniting them to generate hot gaseous products of combustion which are discharged through a nozzle slot arranged at the bottom of the combustion chamber. The nozzle slot extends diametrically of the drilling area at the bottom and slot outline or a plurality of slots arranged symmetrically relative to the longitudinal axis of the drilling body.Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 1978Date of Patent: February 26, 1980Assignee: Messerschmitt-Bolkow-Blohm GmbHInventors: Werner Baum, German Munding

Patent number: 4076082Abstract: A thermal drilling device which operates in a rotary or circumferentially oscillatory motion and which is particularly adapted for drilling geological formations comprises a drill body which has an interior combustion chamber with a bottom having an outlet defining a discharge nozzle. Means are provided for adding fuel components into the combustion chamber and for igniting them to generate hot gaseous products of combustion which are discharged through a nozzle slot arranged at the bottom of the combustion chamber. The nozzle slot extends diametrically of the drilling area at the bottom and slot outline or a plurality of slots arranged symmetrically relative to the longitudinal axis of the drilling body. In one embodiment the nozzle slot has a radially extending portion with the circumferential width of the slot increasing in a radial outward direction.Type: GrantFiled: October 21, 1976Date of Patent: February 28, 1978Assignee: Messerschmitt-Bolkow-Blohm GmbHInventors: Werner Baum, German Munding
