  • Patent number: 11969362
Abstract: An upper-extremity prosthetic is adapted to engage with an athletic ball. The prosthetic includes one or more springs that provide energy return as a user is throwing the ball using the prosthetic. The springs can have a conductivity that changes in relation to an amount of strain or deformation of the spring. The change in conductivity can be used to provide haptic feedback to the user so the user can sense the amount of force being applied to throw the ball. In some embodiments, the springs are made by a multi-material 3D printing (additive manufacturing) process and include a first material that is electrically non-conductive and a second material that electrically conductive. In some embodiments, the prosthetic also includes one or more cantilevered springs that are also adapted to engage with the ball and to provide energy return while throwing the ball.

  • Patent number: 9352827
Abstract: A hydraulic shimmy damper that resolves drawbacks in several known shimmy dampers, such as damping characteristics that are dependent on oil temperature variations. The disclosed shimmy damper includes a hydraulic compensator (40) having an internal fluid volume that is significantly more important than a fluid volume expelled from the body of the shimmy damper when its piston moves fore and aft. The shimmy damper also includes a hydraulic manifold (30) arranged between the body and the hydraulic compensator and defining a transfer channel between chambers in the piston that is connected to the hydraulic compensator. The manifold receives interchangeable hydraulic cartridge-type valves (CV1,RV1; CV2,RV2) for metering the fluid flowing from the chambers to the transfer channel, and allows the fluid to freely enter the chambers from the transfer channel. The present shimmy damper is therefore much less sensitive to oil temperature variation under intense shimmy.

Further, the dual-spring assembly includes two compression springs arranged in series and each having selected, but different spring rates. The first spring primarily absorbs the energy of applied loads that are below a first amplitude or threshold of applied load. Once the applied loads exceed the first amplitude of applied load, the dual-spring assembly operates with an effective spring rate to absorb the energy of applied loads that exceed the first amplitude of applied load. A first head member and a second head member close the first and second cylinder ends, respectively. A first piston rod extends axially outward from the cylinder through the first head member. A first piston is on the first piston rod within the cylinder. A second piston rod extends axially outward from the cylinder through the second head member. A second piston is on the second piston rod within the cylinder. A spring assembly resiliently connects the first piston to the second piston within the cylinder. The spring assembly serves to bias the first and second pistons toward a reference position. The cylinder also has a vent for controlling air flow within the cylinder.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to a one piece, integrally molded, bumper-bellows subassembly for use in vehicles, for example, for use in suspension systems, rack and pinion steering systems and airsprings. The present subassembly prevents the elements from entering the bottom of the subassembly and thus eliminates the possibility of damage to the piston rod and seals of the damper. The present subassembly is cost-effective to produce and can be installed quickly and easily. During operation, the present subassembly is stable and is not affected by a severe drop in the suspension.

The resonance damper is formed in that the casing (40) of the damper (4) forms a moving mass m.sub.40 between the body (1) and the wheel (2), the casing being connected to the wheel via a spring (48) harmonized with the mass m.sub.40. The pistons (41, 42) of the damper are connected via piston rods (43, 44, respectively) to the body (1) and the wheel (2), respectively.

Abstract: A suspension for a vehicle wheel, comprising an elongated shock absorber (7) having an elongated body (6) and first and second abutments at opposite ends of the shock absorber. First and second coil compression springs (R20, R30) are aligned with each other and surround the shock absorber (7). One of these springs bears against one of the abutments and the other of the springs bears against the other of the abutments. A cup (32) is disposed between the springs, this cup surrounding the body and being movable lengthwise of the body. Both of the springs bear on the cup (32). An annular jack (5) is fixed to and surrounds the body and comprises one (10) of the abutments. A third abutment (31) is fixed to the body a distance from the jack (5). An elastic ring (54) is compressible between the cup (32) and the third abutment (31).

Abstract: A shock absorbing device is disclosed, allowing reducing the vehicle weight at least by half. The device includes a tubular housing (TH) and within it a resilient shock dampening assembly (SDS) elastically axially movable is secured, through one or more inter coiled preliminary extended tension coil springs 6 and (6a). (SDS) also is locked to (TH) by a locking ring (8), in order to preserve said preliminary extension. (SDS) includes a plurality of telescopic sections, (UTS), (ITS2), (ITS1), and (LTS), resiliently supported by a plurality of compression coil springs (1), (2), and (3), interposed between them, designed to absorb average shocks. When the greater shock forces after entirely compressing the springs reach their predetermined unlocking level, rather than bottoming, ring (8) is opened, allowing the (SDS) to extend axially upward, opposed by springs (6) and (6a).

  • Patent number: 5215327
Abstract: The stiffness of the suspension is very much a function of the load in hydro-pneumatic vehicle suspensions. With high loads the vehicle suspension is stiff and with a light load it is relatively soft. In addition, the vehicle suspension of the wheel on the outside of the turn is stiffer than that of the wheel at the inside of the turn. The changes in the stiffness of the vehicle suspension are very disagreeable and can result in dangerous driving conditions. Equalization of the stiffness of the vehicle suspension is provided with the aid of a supplemental force. The supplemental force acts in the same direction as the load force of the vehicle chassis. The vehicle suspension is preferably suited for motor vehicles.

Abstract: The total periodically induced vibratory disturbance in a structure having unique structural characteristics is minimized. Actuators are operated in response to complex input signals to produce counteractive forces in the structure. Sensors responsive to the vibrational disturbance and the counteractive forces produce outputs indicative thereof. A processor having an electrical characteristic related to the structural characteristic produces complex outputs for each actuator in response to the sensor inputs. The complex outputs are adjusted by the processor to result in a convergence of the structural response to the minimum vibration in response to the disturbance and the actuator inputs.

An adaptive algorithm is implemented which utilizes the sensed velocity or acceleration of the difference between the pulsting forces acting on the shaft and an applied control force to generate an estimate of the phase shift existing therebetween to adjust a pair of adaptive weighting coefficients for sine and cosine force components which are adjusted by a least mean square (LMS) algorithm. Actuating signals for the reaction mass actuator are generated from the weighted force components which applies a controlled force to the shaft to oppose the shaft pulsation force and thus cancel the vibration.
