Abstract: A gripper head for attachment to the Z axis shaft of a robot or a pick and place machine to pick up objects and position them on a workpiece, comprises a body from which projects a pair of gripping jaws which are slidable horizontally relative to the body by first and second pneumatic piston and cylinder units, respectively. A hold down and tamper member is vertically movable between the jaws by a third piston and cylinder unit so as to hold down an object to be picked up while the jaws are being closed about it and to tamp the object down against the workpiece. A brake is provided for stopping the piston of one of the first and second piston and cylinder units in a desired position. The hold down and tamper member may be arranged also to act as a vacuum pick up device.

Abstract: A joining jig for use in joining automotive vehicle body outer panels is composed of first and second contact members whose contact surfaces are contactable respectively with inside and outside faces of a joint section of the body panels. Both the contact members are so biased that their contact surfaces contact with the corresponding faces of the joint section under the action of a relatively high biasing force, when a brazing operation is carried out. An additional biasing device is provided for lightly biasing the first and second contact members so that their contact surfaces contact with the corresponding faces of the joint section under the action of a relatively low biasing force, prior to the biasing under the action of the relatively high biasing force, thereby enabling a precise location of the joining jig contact surfaces relative to the joint section.

Abstract: A vise assembly, for use on a drill press having a vertical cylindrical column and a table with a flat upper surface substantially perpendicular to the column, has a mounting block slidably and rotatably mounted on the column and a frame slidably mounted on the mounting block for movement parallel to the flat top surface of the table. The frame includes a back plate, at least two pairs of rods connected to the back plate, fixed and movable jaws, one of the pair of rods being connected to the fixed jaw and the other of the pairs of rods being connected to the movable jaw. The jaws normally rest on the table. In the preferred embodiment, hydraulic cylinders, carried by the back plate, are connected to move the pair of rods connected to the movable jaw. In another embodiment, a manually operated screw arrangement is used to move one pair of rods relative to the other, to move the movable jaw toward the fixed jaw.

  • Patent number: 4557371
Abstract: The present invention relates to a work-clamp pallet used to clamp workpieces on a table of a machine tool to improve the working efficiency of the machine tool. This is achieved by shortening the time for exchanging workpieces on the table and for positioning workpieces on the table along both X and Y axes. A large number of workpieces are positioned on a work-clamp pallet along the Y-axis by the aid of a standard frame secured to a base block and along the X-axis by the aid of positioning stoppers projecting from the standard frame. The workpieces are clamped against the standard frame by clamping devices disposed at least on one side of the standard frame. The positioning and clamping a large number of workpieces on the base block is done outside the machine and, when the machine has stopped a machining over, a work-clamp pallet is transferred onto the table in exchange for that with finished workpieces which is removed.

  • Patent number: 4520919
Abstract: A work-clamp pallet of the exchangeable type for facilitating changing of works and intended for use with a machine tool of either the vertical or horizontal type with its base block provided with a plurality of hydraulic clamping devices and also with a special shut-off valve for shutting down its oil path. It is so arranged that its oil path may be shut down after supplying the hydraulic clamping devices with a set level of hydraulic pressure. This hydraulic pressure is maintained for a long time without any supplementary feeding of hydraulic pressure for the clamping devices to be kept in the clamping condition. When this work-clamp pallet is used, it is possible to change workpieces on the work-clamp pallet at a work-changing station outside the work table of the machine tool. The work-clamp pallet with workpieces clamped in position can then be transferred onto the machine tool to carry out the machining operations.
