Abstract: A magnetic holding device uses an array of switchable magnets. A carrier holds the array of switchable magnets to form a working surface. Each switchable magnet has a coil of wire surrounding a magnetizable core element. The array is arranged in groups of magnets. A circuit is coupled to the coils to selectively magnetize and demagnetize each group of switchable magnets to selectively independently place each group into one of these states: an ON state that configures the selected group to have a first magnetic polarity at the working surface, an ON state that configures the selected group to have an opposite magnetic polarity at the working surface, and an OFF state that configures the magnets in the selected group to have no magnetism at the working surface. This abstract is not to be considered limiting, since other embodiments may deviate from the features described in this abstract.

Abstract: A magnetic worktable includes a worktable body and a plurality of magnetic devices disposed at a worktable body. Positions of the magnetic devices at the worktable body are variable. The magnetic devices are electrically connected to each other via a circuit, such that the magnetic devices can generate a magnetic attraction force when magnetized. The total area of the magnetic devices accounts for a small portion of the worktable body area, allowing a user to change the arrangement and quantity of the magnetic devices by modularization and according to the shape and processing method of a workpiece. Therefore, any workpieces can be fixed to the magnetic devices by magnetic attraction. Accordingly, the magnetic worktable incurs a low manufacturing cost and advantageously features high practicability.

Abstract: An apparatus and associated method for orienting a workpiece during processing. A fixture supports the workpiece adjacent a noncontacting biaser. At least one of the fixture and the biaser are selectively movable in a first direction with respect to the other. The biaser directs a first magnetic force capable of moving the workpiece relative to the fixture in a different second direction without physical contact between the biaser and the workpiece during a travel path segment of movement between the fixture and the biaser. The biaser further directs a second magnetic force capable of moving the workpiece relative to the fixture in a third direction, that is different than the second direction, without physical contact between the biaser and the workpiece during a subportion of the travel path segment of movement between the fixture and the biaser.
