Saddle Opener Patents (Class 270/52.27)
  • Patent number: 8915491
Abstract: A method for operating a collection system for printed products includes drawing off the printed products from discharge device(s) disposed at corresponding discharge point(s) in the collection system. The printed products are deposited on a collection section during a cycle period of the discharge device(s) so as to form a bundle of printed products. The bundle is transferred to a subsequent conveying mechanism having receiving pockets. It is determined whether at least one missing printed product exists due to an incorrect drawing off from the discharge point(s). A repair process is initiated and controlled in which the at least one missing printed product is drawn off from the corresponding discharge point(s) at a time corresponding to a subsequent recurrent pocket-related cycle of the subsequent conveying mechanism in a subsequent cycle period of the discharge device(s). The at least one missing printed product is inserted in the relevant receiving pocket.

  • Patent number: 8398064
Abstract: A device and a method for inserting flat objects into a folded printed product, wherein the products are held by grippers of a gripper conveyor which opens only briefly for inserting the flat object. In order to also stabilize the product in the open state of the gripper, a support element is provided, which moves between the two product parts before the gripper opens and rests on one of the product parts. If the orientations of the support elements and the grippers are selected in a suitable fashion, this will suffice in order to position the product and keep it open such that the flat object can be inserted and the gripper can then be closed again, while clamping the product with the flat object into position. Optionally, further support elements are present, which additionally support the product from the outside, such as the folded edge.

  • Patent number: 8328001
Abstract: In a method and a device for opening printed products (26), folded printed products (20) are held on a back (28) and transported. Thereby, they are aligned at an edge region (44) lying opposite the back (28), for example by way of co-running lugs (98?). Subsequently, the edge region (44) is encompassed by a holding element (50) and held in a preferably loose manner. Preferably, the uppermost sheet of the printed product (26) is gripped with a revolving opening element (72) engaging on the printed product (26) behind the edge region (44), and pulled out of the holding element (50), while the remaining sheet or the remaining sheets of the printed product (26) remain in the holding element (50). After moving a holding-open element (102) into the printed product (26) opened in such a manner, the holding element (50) moves away to the bottom and thus the edge region (44) of the printed product (26) slips out of the holding element (50).

  • Patent number: 8220793
Abstract: An apparatus for thread-stitching of folded print products includes a sewing station in which individual print products are stitched along the fold and print products are then sewn together along the spine to form a book block. A pivoting saddle supplies individual print products straddling thereon to the sewing station. A feeder separates folded print products from a stack of folded print products. A feeding arrangement includes a feed path connecting the feeder to the pivoting saddle, and has a feeding end that cooperates with the feeder to supply the individual print products to the feed path and a discharge end that operates to supply the individual print products to the pivoting saddle. The sewing station, as seen from the top, is arranged on the machine frame of the apparatus, between the feeding end of the feeding arrangement and the pivoting saddle.

  • Patent number: 7905475
Abstract: The gathering, conveyance, and assembly of printed material utilizing one or more aerodynamic positioning devices in conjunction with binding machinery is disclosed. The aerodynamic positioning device utilizes controlled fluid flow via a series of discretely spaced jets that create a low pressure region beneath a signature dropping from an adjacent feeder. The aerodynamic positioning device allows the binding machinery to operate at high speeds with lightweight and unbalanced signatures while maintaining high-quality production with reduced paper jams.

  • Patent number: 7628390
Abstract: In an installation and a method for the lifting of folded printed products (1) from a conveyor, wherein the printed products (1) are transported straddled across a saddle (2), the saddle (2) includes a counter tool (4) for processing of printed products (1) straddled across the saddle (2). Therein a means of lifting (5) extends alongside and parallel to the saddle (2) and is staggered at right angles to a support shoulder (3)of the saddle (2) as well as to the counter tool. As the means of lifting, the support shoulder (3) and in particular the counter tools are not situated in line but staggered, an unrestricted positioning of binding points along the support shoulder (3) is possible. There is no need to consider the position of lifting tappets or levers for the lifting of the printed products in the support shoulder (3).

  • Publication number: 20030047859
Abstract: The extension arm is used for removing printed products, which are conveyed with the aid of circulating carriers, such that they straddle a saddle-shaped support of a conveying arrangement. With the aid of a gripping device, the printed products are gripped and then lifted off the conveying arrangement. The gripping device comprises two rotating gripping members, which are respectively positioned on the circumference of an also rotating support and between which the printed products are gripped and removed. The gripping members preferably have a curved outer shell surface that forms an essentially circular contour together with an outer shell surface of a support. The printed products can be pulled off in horizontal direction and with initially high speed from the conveying arrangement and can then be transferred with a vertical movement to another conveying arrangement. Thus, a collision with the subsequent printed product can be avoided even with a high production capacity.
