Abstract: The feeding mechanism for feeding media from an initial site to a predetermined site comprises a base, a scrubber, a deskewer, two feeders, a lifting device having two cam portions, a driving element and a releasing device. The deskewer is moved between a first position and a second position and sets the media located at the initial site. The two feeders are used for transmitting the media located at the initial site toward the predetermined site. The cam portions are used as a lifter to move the deskewer from the first position to the second position. The driving element disposed between the lifting device and the releasing device generates forces to actuate the cam portions to move the deskewer. The releasing device is used as an overload protection clutch connected between the lifting device and the driving element, having a first plate separately contacting the driving element.

The media separator includes a separation member that is positioned by a position adjustment mechanism using output from a piezo electric sensor. A leading edge of the unit of print media moved from the media tray contacts the separation member. The angle between a plane of the unit of print media and a perpendicular to a tangent at a location the unit of print media contacts the surface of the separation member forms a contact angle. When multiple units of the print media are moved into the media path, a frictional force is exerted by the top unit of the print media upon the unit of print media below the top unit of print media. Abstract: A retard module in a mail separator having a floating, middle idler to change the ingestion angle of the mail separator. The retard module further has a downstream idler, an upstream pulley driven by a motor, and an endless belt forming a loop around the idlers and the pulley to provide a retarding force against a feed module. The downstream portion of the retard belt and the belt of the feed module form a nip to ingest incoming mail. The floating idler and the downstream idler are mounted on a bracket which, in turn, is pivotally mounted on a frame of the retard module. Initially, the ingestion angle at the nip is acute and thereby reduces damage to the incoming mailpieces. But when a thick mailpiece enters the separator, it causes the floating idler to move away further from the feed module and thereby increases the ingestion angle. A large ingestion angle allows thicker mailpieces to pass through the nip without substantially increasing the nipping forces.

  • Patent number: 5971390
Abstract: Each sheet of a stack of media is aligned with a fixed alignment surface prior to being fed towards a process station of a printer by a single pick roll. During the first portion of its cycle of operation, the sheet advancing force of the pick roll, which is offset from the axis or centerline of the sheet, exerts a torque on at least the uppermost sheet of the stack to have one of its sides engage the alignment surface if it is skewed. When the one side of the sheet is not engaging the alignment surface when the pick roll is initially energized, the uppermost sheet's leading edge engages a resilient projection of an insert of a rib, which is offset from the axis of the sheet but farther from the alignment surface than the pick roll. The skewed sheet pivots about the projection, which is formed of a high coefficient of friction material, extending beyond the surface of the rib. During the remainder of its energization, the pick roll advances the sheet towards the process station of the printer.

  • Patent number: 5971389
Abstract: A singulator adapted for feeding articles of varying thickness is comprised of a driver with a movable and resiliently biased retarder, called a dancer. The dancer moves back and forth along the article flow path, in response to the passage through the nip of the articles being singulated, to automatically set the gap at the singulator nip. A dancer body motion may be linear or pivoting. The path of article travel through the singulator nip is at an angle to the downstream article flow path. Thus, when a takeaway device pulls on the article, the dancer moves to open the singulator gap slightly to enable the article to more freely be taken away. A preferred dancer has an endless belt and is spring biased to lightly contact the driver at the nip in the absence of an article; and, periodic reversal of driver direction engages the dancer belt surface at the nip and moves it upstream, thereby exposing a new surface.

Abstract: In an automatic document feeder (ADF), a document separating mechanism includes a separator belt. Documents stacked on a tray are caused to abut against the separator belt at their leading edges and then introduced into a nip between the belt and a feed roller to be separated one by one. The angle at which the documents abut against the separator belt is variable. The separator belt is movably mounted on a guide pivotable about the shaft of a separator roller. The above angle refers to an angle between the surface of the documents stacked on the tray and the surface of the portion of the separator belt against which the documents abut.

The pressure increasing unit increases the contact pressure until the mounting of the sheet container to the body of the sheet feeding apparatus is completed so that, even if the sheet container is inserted into the sheet feeding apparatus vigorously, the sheets are prevented from entering between the conveyer and the separation member, thus preventing poor sheet separation.
