  • Patent number: 6776408
Abstract: Provided is a sheet discharge apparatus including a plurality of stackers on which a sheet discharged from a conveyance passage is stacked, and a gate which changes a discharge direction of the sheet. The gate can move over a first changeover position to guide the sheet to one stacker, and a second changeover position to guide the sheet to the other stacker. When the gate is moved to the second changeover position, the sheet is guided to the other stacker through a bent guide passage. A pressing mechanism is disposed on an upstream side along a conveyance direction of the sheet from the gate. The pressing mechanism applies a pressure and gives a wavy shape to the sheet, and temporarily makes the sheet rigid as long as the gate is in the first position.

Abstract: The invention provides for an improved signature hopper loader for feeding signatures to a hopper on a binding line. The hopper loader includes two conveyor assemblies that work together to feed signatures to the hopper. The first conveyor assembly is connected to the second conveyor assembly such that there is an angle in the range of 110-120 degrees between the first and second conveyor assemblies. The first and second conveyor assemblies also include forming guides that serve to fan, or deblock, the signatures that are traveling along the first or second conveyor assembly. As the signatures travel over the forming guides, they are bent to give the signatures rigidity and to further facilitate deblocking. The hopper loader further includes an opposing belt that is held on top of at least a portion of one of the transporting belts. The opposing belt is hinged to the frame of the hopper loader and preferably swings down on top of the center belt in the second conveyor.

  • Patent number: 6701098
Abstract: An implementation of a technology is described herein for automatically determining the heat-conductive properties of print media. More particularly, described herein is a technology for indirectly and automatically determining the heat-conductive properties of print media by determining the stiffness of print media, such as acetate and paper. At least one embodiment, described herein, includes a registration assembly of a laser printer. In this assembly, the print medium is deflected (i.e., bent, bowed, buckled, etc.). A measurement of such deflection is made. That measurement is an indication of the relative stiffness of the print medium. Assuming approximately similar densities, the stiffness of print media is directly related to its thickness. The thicker the medium the stiffer it is and vice versa. The thickness of print media is directly related to its heat conductivity.

Abstract: A projecting tab formed with a bulged portion and an indent on an upper side thereof is provided inwardly projecting in a transport path. A sheet being transported in the transport path is formed into a seemingly wavy configuration in the width direction of the transport path while in contact with the projecting tab. The sheet thus formed with the seemingly wavy configuration is given with a sufficient transport backup force in a transport direction, thereby being hard to bend in the transport direction. Thus, the sheet supplied with the sufficient transport backup force is free from a curled lead end, folded or bent corner lead end of the sheet in the transport direction, and sheet jam. The arrangement of the projecting tab securely accomplishes sheet transport in a desired transport direction without a possibility of sheet transport failure.

  • Patent number: 6352253
Abstract: A discharged sheet stacking apparatus includes a sheet feed-in device for pinching and feeding a sheet onto a sheet stacking portion on which a plurality of sheets are stacked and for causing a tip end of the sheet to abut against a sheet stopper. The sheet feed in device is disposed at a position spaced apart from the sheet stopper by a distance smaller than a length of the sheet. The sheet feed-in device continues the feeding operation while pinching a tail end of the sheet even after the tip end of the sheet abuts against the sheet stopper so that, after a loop is formed in the tail end of the sheet, the sheet is discharged onto the sheet stacking portion.

  • Patent number: 6340156
Abstract: A structure including a transporting roller for transporting sheets; and a curling roller for transporting the sheets at a location downstream from the transporting roller in a sheet-transporting direction, the driving torque of the curling roller being larger than the driving torque of the transporting roller. The transporting roller and the curling roller are constructed so that their speeds can be switched from a first transporting speed to a second transporting speed which is greater than the first transporting speed. The time required to switch the speed of the curling roller from the first transporting speed to the second transporting speed is made longer than the time required to switch the speed of the transporting roller from the first transporting speed to the second transporting speed.

  • Patent number: 6338481
Abstract: The rotation of the second conveyance rollers located downstream from the first conveyance rollers, which are located downstream from the thermal fixing device of the image forming apparatus, is stopped for a prescribed period of time, or the speed of the second conveyance rollers is made slower than that of the first conveyance rollers. A loop is formed in the sheet through this difference in rotation speed, and the curling of the sheet caused through the thermal fixing is corrected. A torque limiter (or one-way clutch) is mounted at least in the drive path for either the first or second conveyance path. When a rigid sheet such as thick paper or low-moisture paper—for which curling is not likely—is conveyed, slipping occurs in the drive path due to the rigidity of the sheet itself, and the loop formation is automatically cancelled.

  • Patent number: 6338483
Abstract: A sheet feeder assembly includes a self-actuating prefeed roll located upstream of a deskewing device, which can include a document sensor switch and a deskew nip roll. After a sheet has been detected at the input of the assembly, a limited slip clutch causes the prefeed nip to close. The prefeed device selectively engages the sheet based on detection of the sheet at the input and then disengages upon detection of the sheet at the deskewing device. Thus, there are no obstructions at the input that the sheet must pass before engagement by the prefeed assembly. By this, chances of misfeeding a sheet that has not been sufficiently pushed into the document feeder are greatly reduced. Moreover, the assembly has increased latitude in the positioning of the input sheet and is particularly desirable for light weight documents since no obstructions exist within the paper path.

  • Patent number: 6330425
Abstract: A double-surface printing apparatus, which is small-sized and has a simple construction to make it impossible to take out a sheet, of which one surface has been subjected to printing, from outside. The apparatus includes a paper discharge tray, to which sheets having been subjected to printing are discharged; a sheet reversing mechanism including a reversal/temporary storage unit for guiding a sheet in a direction different from a discharge direction toward the paper discharge tray, once exposing the sheet outside of the apparatus, and rotating conveying rollers in an opposite direction to thereby reverse the sheet; and a protective cover, which covers the sheet conveyed to the reversal/temporary storage unit so that a sheet, of which one-surface has been subjected to printing, cannot be taken out from outside.

  • Patent number: 6318714
Abstract: An automated banking machine (10) identifies and stores documents such as currency bills deposited by a user. The machine then selectively recovers such documents from storage and dispenses them to other users. The machine includes a central transport (70) wherein documents deposited in a stack are unstacked, oriented and identified. Such documents are then routed to storage areas in recycling canisters (92, 94, 96, 98). When a user subsequently requests a dispense, documents stored in the storage areas are selectively picked therefrom and delivered to the user through an input/output area (50) of the machine.

Abstract: A sheet conveying device of the present invention includes a roll-up guide rotatable about a shaft. When the roll-up guide is shifted to a roll-up position where it intersects a first tray, it rolls up a sheet discharged and stores the sheet in the form of a roll. The roll-up guide allows, when shifted to a pick-up position above the body of the device, the operator of the device to pick up the rolled sheet from the roll-up guide at the operating position in front of the device. The device is easy to operate and is capable of storing a sheet in the form of a roll and allowing the roll to be safely picked up without any damage.
