Abstract: A sheet registration system, especially for printers, with a lower cost and lower mass-movement system for both sheet deskewing and transverse registration repositioning of the sheets in the same integral system, especially for higher speed printing. Only one main drive motor can drive both of the two spaced apart sheet feeding nips, together with a much lower power, and lower cost, deskewing differential drive system for providing the relative differential angular movement of the two spaced sheet feeding nips to achieve the desired amount of sheet deskewing movement, without interrupting the forward feeding movement of the sheet. Also disclosed are extensive further reductions in the component mass of the lateral translation movement for lateral sheet registration.

Abstract: A method for the register-true alignment of sheets (1) before the transfer to a sheet-processing machine with the assistance of a carrier (7,9) that is movable in the machine cycle and is driven as a function of a signal, in order to feed the sheets individually to an aligning stop. To permit exact and reliable alignment even at high machine speeds with an uncomplicated mechanism, the signal is generated when a sheet edge (12) to be fed passes a predetermined location between the carrier (7,9) and aligning stop (5), and in response to the signal, the carrier performs a preset movement, identical from sheet to sheet, by which the carried-along sheet (1) is fed to the aligning stop with a speed greater than zero, but substantially less than the maximum sheet speed during the feeding movement. The method is particularly suitable for side-edge alignment, but is also suitable for leading-edge alignment.

Abstract: A sheet feeder assembly includes a self-actuating prefeed roll located upstream of a deskewing device, which can include a document sensor switch and a deskew nip roll. After a sheet has been detected at the input of the assembly, a limited slip clutch causes the prefeed nip to close. The prefeed device selectively engages the sheet based on detection of the sheet at the input and then disengages upon detection of the sheet at the deskewing device. Thus, there are no obstructions at the input that the sheet must pass before engagement by the prefeed assembly. By this, chances of misfeeding a sheet that has not been sufficiently pushed into the document feeder are greatly reduced. Moreover, the assembly has increased latitude in the positioning of the input sheet and is particularly desirable for light weight documents since no obstructions exist within the paper path.

Abstract: A banknote centering device uses a drive arrangement to accelerate two opposed side plates and the inertia of the side plates causes the banknote to be centered. The resistance of the banknote to buckling stops the side plates. A separate drive for the side plates accelerates the side plates and stalls when a banknote is centered. Preferably, the current for the drive of the side plates is variable to adjust for changing conditions.

Abstract: An arrangement of sewing successive edges of material which extend in two directions. The arrangement comprises a stationary sewing table having a prescribed sewing area. The sewing table supports a carriage. A sewing machine is supported by the carriage. Drives are provided for the carriage and the sewing machine and are operative to move the carriage selectively in the X and Y directions while operating the sewing machine to sew. A material feeding assembly having an independent drive is provided to feed material into the sewing area and to maintain the fed material in the sewing area in a flat fixed position for a prescribed period of time. A control operates to actuate the feeding assembly to position the material, to actuate the sewing machine to sew and to actuate the carriage carrying the sewing machine to move in the X and Y directions about the sewing area forming automatically a folded fabric having all edges stitched.

  • Patent number: 6062369
Abstract: A bill accepting apparatus has a pair of photo-electronic sensors disposed spaced apart from each other on an imaginary line orthogonal to a bill transport direction. The leading edge of the bill being transported is detected at times T1 and T2 by the respective sensors. A time difference between T1 and T2 is compared with a predetermined value. From a known distance between the two sensors, a known bill transport speed and the time difference, the tilt angle of the leading edge can be determined. Analog outputs hyof the sensors are individually converted at a given frequency to first and second series of digital values. A CPU interrupt signal is obtained each time when both of each of the first and second series of digital values are obtained, and this interrupt signal initiates a skewed bill detecting task in a CPU.

  • Patent number: 6059284
Abstract: An apparatus and method for registering and deskewing a sheet along a sheet path. A pair of drive spheres are located in the sheet path. When a sheet enters the nips formed by the spheres the sheet is driven until it is sensed by a sensor. The drive spheres are driven by a pair of wheels which allow the spheres to rotate about any axis through their center and parallel to the plane of the sheet. The spheres are driven such that the sheet is side registered and deskewed as it is moved along the sheet path. Constant feedback from the sensors to the drive controller allows the sheet to be registered in a very short distance and has the added benefit of self compensation for wear of the drive components. The wide registration and deskewing latitude of the device allows for the use of relatively inexpensive and low accuracy sheet drives preceding the device.

Abstract: Conveyor rollers 1a, 1b which are driven by a rotary drive motor 9 are disposed in different locations in a direction in which a sheet is conveyed. The conveyor rollers 1a, 1b are arranged so as to be able to move in a direction intersecting the direction of conveyance by means of sheet shift means which are driven by shift motors 11a, 11b. Sheet sensors 13a, 13b are provided in the reference position for the side edge of the sheet. If the sheet sensor 13a (or 13b) does not detect the side edge of the sheet 2, the shift motors 11a, 11b are controlled in such a way that a conveyor roller 1a (or 1b) corresponding to the sheet sensor approaches the sheet side edge reference position. In contrast, if the sheet sensor detects the side edge of the sheet 2, the shift motors are controlled in such a way that the conveyor roller departs from the reference position.

Abstract: A positioning conveyor is incorporated in a conveyor system for adjusting the position of a sheet on the conveyor system. The positioning conveyor has two belt type conveyor sections that are independently movable transverse to the feed path and are utilized to adjust the position of the sheet. The sheet is scanned by a scanner and the data is input to a computer. A vacuum zone on each section provides spaced apart gripping points to establish a pivot axis to correct for skew. The computer controls the coordinated movement of the sections to pivot and side shift the sheet to a desired position.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for deskewing a sheet of media traveling through a paper path in a printer is provided. A buckle is formed in the sheet of media by over-driving the sheet into stationary deskew rollers that form a deskew nip downstream. A deskewing bias element includes a plurality of articulated segmented surfaces that contact the buckle and urge the leading edge of the sheet into the deskew nip. The buckle force combined with the biasing force from the deskewing bias element aligns the leading edge of the sheet with the deskew nip across the full width of the sheet, thereby removing any skew.

Abstract: An image forming apparatus records an image on a recording medium after correcting a slant of the image according to a type of document sheet or an operating history of the image forming apparatus. Normally, a slant of the document sheet is corrected by bringing one edge of the sheet in contact with a document scale provided on a document platform. When the sheet is of thin paper or sheets of different sizes are mixed, an image signal obtained by scanning a document image is electrically processed so as to correct a slant of an image to be recorded. When the image signal is electrically processed so as to correct the slant of the image to be recorded, the correction of image slant may be based also on the operating history of the image forming apparatus, for example, the total number of sheets transported, the number of times a paper jam has occurred or the cumulative value of the slant angle of the image.
