Patent number: 6338483Abstract: A sheet feeder assembly includes a self-actuating prefeed roll located upstream of a deskewing device, which can include a document sensor switch and a deskew nip roll. After a sheet has been detected at the input of the assembly, a limited slip clutch causes the prefeed nip to close. The prefeed device selectively engages the sheet based on detection of the sheet at the input and then disengages upon detection of the sheet at the deskewing device. Thus, there are no obstructions at the input that the sheet must pass before engagement by the prefeed assembly. By this, chances of misfeeding a sheet that has not been sufficiently pushed into the document feeder are greatly reduced. Moreover, the assembly has increased latitude in the positioning of the input sheet and is particularly desirable for light weight documents since no obstructions exist within the paper path.Type: GrantFiled: November 23, 1999Date of Patent: January 15, 2002Inventors: Jeffrey L. Patent number: 6328302Abstract: A method and an apparatus for collating a plurality of groups of mail items, such as flats mail, each group being pre-sequenced according to prioritized delivery addresses, into a final sequenced set of the mail items from the groups, utilizing the prioritized delivery addresses. Each bundle of mail items is formed into a single input stream of the individual mail items. The mail items are transported along a conveyor system from the input stream to a staging station. The mail items are sorted at the staging station into a plurality of subsets of mail items re-sequenced as an intermediate step to achieving the final sequenced sets. The mail items are then collated and merged into a single output stream from the respective subsets of mail items in the final sequenced set. Portions of the output stream from the staging station are collected in batches having justified unbound edges which maintain the sequence consistent with the prioritized delivery order sequence of the mail for a given carrier route.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 2001Date of Patent: December 11, 2001Assignee: Northrop Grumman CorporationInventors: David Brian Hendrickson, Daryl Mileaf, William P. Patent number: 6267372Abstract: The apparatus has an input pocket into which a stack of sheets is inserted. At least the sheet to be picked from the stack by the picking device is transported by means of a feed device to a picking device which then picks one sheet from the stack at a time. To improve singling quality, a presingling device is provided which first transports only part of the stack to the picking device. In order to ensure that stacks of different-sized sheet material are singled reliably, an aligning device is provided which transports at least the sheet to be picked from the stack in the direction of a defined stop and thus aligns the sheet against said stop. The aligning device preferably cooperates alternatingly with the feed device. To increase singling reliability, a pressure plate is provided in the presingling device for acting upon the presingled partial stack with a certain pressure.Type: GrantFiled: August 30, 1999Date of Patent: July 31, 2001Assignee: Giesecke & Devrient GmbHInventors: Ulrich Mylaeus, Kurt Schübel, Dirk Müller

Patent number: 6241242Abstract: A print media deskew apparatus includes a print media support having a first surface defining a plane for a print media transport path and a second surface parallel to the print media transport path and two apertures in the first surface aligned in the print media transport path. A first set of selectively driven spheres in the print media transport path and a second set of selectively driven spheres in the print media transport path downstream from the first impart a paper path force and a lateral driving force on a media sheet such that the sheet is driven laterally to the print media transport path until edge contact with the second surface removes any skew from the sheet.Type: GrantFiled: October 12, 1999Date of Patent: June 5, 2001Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventor: Michael W. Patent number: 6186498Abstract: A sheet registration apparatus for registering sheets all at one time by regulating them at a reference position on the side of the sheet transport direction and on the side perpendicular to the sheet transport side. The sheet registration apparatus comprises: a regulation plate for regulating the side of the sheets perpendicular to the discharge direction (or transport direction) thereof with respect to sort bins for receiving the sheets which have been imaged by an image forming apparatus; and a reference wall for regulating the side of the sheets in the transport direction. On the other hand, a registration rod, as extended through inclined openings formed in the sort bins, are moved toward the regulation plate and turned to the direction to feed the sheets toward the reference wall, so that the sheets are registered while being regulated by the regulation plate and the reference wall in accordance with the movement for the registration of the registration rod.Type: GrantFiled: September 15, 1998Date of Patent: February 13, 2001Assignee: Sharp Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Kaoru Suzuki, Junya Masuda, Toshihisa Matsuo, Koji Katamoto

Patent number: 6164643Abstract: A paper path is provided with a paper guide for guiding paper, an oblique roller for obliquely moving the paper toward the paper guide and an electromagnetic clutch allowing and interrupting transmission of a rotating force to the oblique roller. Sensors for detecting the paper are provided upstream and downstream of the oblique roller. Also provided in the paper path is a controller which controls the electromagnetic clutch in accordance with paper sensing operation of the sensors to drive the oblique roller while the paper is passing under the oblique roller. A low-friction paper guiding surface is formed on the paper guide by coating it with a fluoroplastic.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 1998Date of Patent: December 26, 2000Assignee: Kyocera Mita CorporationInventor: Masao Otsuka

Patent number: 6118465Abstract: A single pass color printer employs a band drive to move media sheets through plural developer stations. The band drive also provides motive power to drive, in common (via frictional engagement with their respective peripheries), all of the organic photoconductor (OPC) rollers that are present in plural developer stations that are arrayed along the media movement path. The use of the common band drive assures that the surface speeds of the OPC drums and media sheets are synchronized at their respective points of contact, thus eliminating much of the station to station variations due to differences in diameters and runout of the plural OPC rollers.Type: GrantFiled: March 18, 1998Date of Patent: September 12, 2000Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventors: David J.
