Abstract: An operation of a pickup roller to be performed upon powering on or after paper jam elimination is adjusted according the presence or absence of a document on a document sheet support. When the document is absent on the sheet support, the pickup roller is moved down sufficiently and then moved up by a first distance to assume an upper limit position. When the document is present on the sheet support, the pickup roller is moved up by a second distance which is shorter than the first distance.

Abstract: Using detectors, skewed conveyance of sheet media such as checks can be detected accurately regardless of whether part of the conveyed medium is folded over. The biased feed detection unit 33 of a check processing device 1 according to at least one embodiment of the invention determines the lengths L1 and L2 of the conveyed check 6 (ST31 and ST32) and the thickness of a folded part of the check 6 (ST33) at different positions perpendicular to the transportation direction based on the output of a paper thickness detector 25 and a length detector 26 disposed to the check transportation path 7. The folded length L3 is then subtracted from the difference ?L of the detected lengths to acquire a corrected difference ?L1 (ST35). If the corrected difference ?L1 is less than or equal to a threshold value D, the medium is determined to be conveyed normally (ST37). If the corrected difference ?L1 exceeds the threshold value D, the medium is determined to be skewed (ST38).

The system and method includes a plurality of sensors located along one or more mail piece transport paths. The sensors are used to collect data regarding the gap length between each mail piece transported through the system. The gap length data is processed and stored within a controller/processor that uses the gap lengths to control the operation of one or more devices within the mail sorting system. For example, the gap lengths may be used to control the operation of a diverter, a printer or any other electromechanical, hardware or software device. The gap lengths can be used to trigger and/or inhibit the operation of the one or more devices.

Abstract: In a sheet detecting sensor, light emitted from a linear light emitting element is blocked by a sheet from entering a light receiving element which is located immediately below the sheet. Only light receiving elements which are not immediately below the sheet, receive light from the linear light emitting element. Light passing through a point in a vicinity of an edge portion of the sheet enters only a light receiving element which is located immediately below that point, but not the other light receiving elements. In addition, even when the position of a sheet varies vertically, the same light receiving element receives light passing through the same point in a vicinity of the edge portion of the sheet. Therefore, even when the position of a sheet varies vertically, the edge position of the sheet can be accurately detected.
