  • Patent number: 4943045
Abstract: A print medium sheet feeding system for an ink jet printer having a print head with a planar array of jets is provided by clamping the leading edge of a paper after it is passed through a printing zone to a rotating assembly of parallel disks. The sheet is pulled through the printing zone by rotating the disk with the clamp being carried with the rotating drum. A platen may be provided which has a flat surface in the printing zone forming a tangent to the outer surface of the rotating disks. Alternatively, the platen may be removed and the sheet held in tension between the clamp and a nip region formed by a spring plate held against a restraining plate. In an alternative embodiment, the sheet is initially clamped against the drum by the combination of a lever arm which is selectively engageable with the drum for rotation therewith and an attached actuating arm having a plate which secures a sheet to the drum surface.

  • Patent number: 4905985
Abstract: A grip shaft is supported on a cylinder that makes an oscillating (reciprocating rotational) motion. The grip shaft is provided with a grip for holding a printing material. The grip is further provided with a cam follower. A cam is positioned along the path of motion of the cam follower, and the cam follower engages with an opening portion of the cam when the grip is right before a printing material feeder portion, and opens the grip. Further, when the grip reaches the printing material feeder portion, the cam follower moves to a closing portion of the cam, closing the grip to hold a printing material. After the grip has held a printing material, the cam follower disengages from the cam as the cylinder is rotated in the opposite direction. The opening portion and the closing portion composes a continuous cam surface.

  • Patent number: 4905986
Abstract: Grippers or gripper elements are attached at conveyor chain links of a revolvingly driven conveyor chain. The leading edges of each product of an imbricated product formation, in which each product bears upon the next following or trailing product, comes to lie on a clamping jaw of an associated gripper or gripper element and is engaged from above by a clamping element, such as a clamping finger of such gripper or gripper element. The product conveying direction of the transport apparatus and the product conveying direction of an infeed device delivering the products are in the same direction at a product take-over region of the transport apparatus. During the closing motion of the clamping finger of the gripper or gripper element this clamping finger raises a region or portion of the preceding or leading product which covers the leading edge of the trailing product which is to be engaged by such gripper or gripper element.

  • Patent number: 4900008
Abstract: A sheet clamping system for rotatable drums especially suited for use in retaining and positioning successive receiver sheets for high speed printers. The clamping system enables unidirectional movement of a sheet during delivery of the sheet to the drum from a supply stack, during clamping of the leading edge of the sheet to the drum followed by clamping of the trailing edge of the same sheet to the drum and during subsequent release and delivery of the sheet to a receiving stack or tray. The system features a cam system for actuating respective leading and trailing edge clamps which is supported on the same shaft to which drum driving rotation is supplied by a drive motor. In one embodiment where the drive motor is reversible, a one-way clutch connection of the drum to the shaft enables drum rotation during one rotational direction of the shaft whereas clamping bar actuation is effected by rotation of the shaft in the opposite direction while holding the drum.

  • Patent number: 4698767
Abstract: An infrared dryer is provided for a printing press which uses a series of carriers, each comprising one or more gripper bars, on a conveyor to respectively carry printed sheets past the dryer. The sensor produces different binary signals in response to the presence or absence of material, viz, a gripper bar structure or carried sheets in the path, each carrier producing a predetermined number of transitions between the presence and absence signals, the only change between an empty carrier and one carrying a sheet being the duration of the presence and absence signals. A microprocessor is programmed to cyclically count from zero to the predetermined number of transitions, with each count cycle representing the passage of a carrier. The microprocessor also measures and compares the total durations of the presence and absence signals during each count cycle. If the presence signal duration exceeds the absence signal duration, then the heater is actuated to a preselected operating intensity.

  • Patent number: 4684116
Abstract: Collation of folded printed signatures or sheets is accomplished by a rotating collating cylinder or rotary collator which is rotatably driven about its longitudinal axis of revolution. The rotary collator comprises a plurality of collating conveyors arranged substantially parallel to this longitudinal axis. These collating conveyors are substantially annularly positioned about this longitudinal axis and extend substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the rotary collator. The folded printed signatures or sheets are fed or conveyed by three feeding conveyors or infeed devices and are deposited to straddle the collating conveyors or the respective folded printed signatures or sheets already straddling the collating conveyors. The folded printed signatures or sheets are displaced in the direction of conveyance of the rotary collator while revolving about the longitudinal axis of the rotary collator.

  • Patent number: 4605213
Abstract: The folded items (9) arriving from a folding apparatus (1) are grasped on the leading folded spine (10) by forward grippers (12) on an opening cylinder (8). Then the overhang (11) of each item is grasped by rearward grippers (13). Because of centrifugal force and optionally by means of an electrostatic charging device (7), the lower part of the folded item (9), after being released from the conveyor belts (5, 6), is repelled. As a result, rods (14) secured on a chain system (15) can be introduced, during their upward movement that is at a tangent to the opening cylinder (8), it between the two halves of one printed item, after which the transporting of the folded items (9) to further chain systems (such as 17) can be effected. Subsequently, folded items (9) can be collected one on top of the other and/or accelerated or delayed in accordance with how the transfer location is embodied.
