  • Patent number: 7748711
Abstract: An image forming apparatus includes a first sheet conveying passage that conveys a sheet through an image forming section. A sheet-discharging roller is on an outlet side of the first sheet conveying passage and can rotate in opposite directions. A second sheet conveying passage has an inlet connected to the first sheet conveying passage downstream from the image forming section and an outlet connected to the first sheet conveying passage upstream from the image forming section. A controller controls double-sided printing by causing the sheet-discharging roller to rotate forward to advance the sheet outside the sheet-discharging roller, and then to rotate in reverse to execute a switchback for transporting the sheet to the inlet side of the second sheet conveying passage and then to return the sheet to the upstream of the image forming section. An assisting mechanism adjusts a posture of the sheet to assist the switchback.

  • Patent number: 7510183
Abstract: The present invention provides an apparatus for facing documents during high speed processing. The present invention employs at least one sensor to scan the documents individually as they are fed sequentially through a processing machine. The sensor determines the direction the documents are facing. Depending on the direction the documents are facing, a path selector directs the documents to one of two equal length paths within the processing machine. If a document is facing up, the path selector directs the document along a first path that leads directly to a collection point. If a document is facing down, the path selector directs the document along a second path that includes a twisted conveyor belt which turns the document about the longitudinal axis to face up. The second path meets with the first path, wherein the conveyor belt reinserts the faced documents back into the same sequential position that the document was in relative to the other documents before being diverted by the path selector.

  • Patent number: 7044464
Abstract: An apparatus for reversing a sheet, such as a banknote, from a front face to a rear face. In the reversing apparatus a first end of a common path communicates with an exit of a first conveyance path, a second end of common path communicates with an exit of a second conveyance path, and the first end of common path communicates with a merging path. Since the merging path is immediately after the common path, no delay is caused in the timing of feeding a banknote into the next processing step, improving reversing process performance. A first reversing roller rotates based on the on or off condition of a first electromagnetic clutch and a second reversing roller rotates based on on or off condition of a second electromagnetic clutch. A banknote can be quickly and surely conveyed in the common path.

  • Patent number: 6988725
Abstract: A method of registering a sheet in a duplex copier to alleviate the misalignment between the images copied on the front and back of the same sheet and to compensate for paper cut tolerances. The error angle of skew between a target angle, e.g. 90°, and the trailing edge of the sheet is measured and stored during a first pass. When the same sheet is fed through a second pass, the error angle is retrieved and the target angle is adjusted to compensate for the skew error of the first pass so that any misalignment between front and back images is substantially improved over systems that register images to the sheet without any knowledge of the location of the opposite side image.

  • Patent number: 6814353
Abstract: An automatic document feeder comprising a reversing device and a discharge device is disclosed. The reversing device and the discharge device are disposed such that the distance in the horizontal direction from an original document reading position in the automatic document feeder to the discharge device is longer than the distance in the horizontal direction from the original document reading position to the reversing device. This configuration allows the use of original documents whose length in the transport direction is short, and also shortens the transport path in the automatic document feeder as well as the amount of time needed to read an original document. Furthermore, this configuration increases the visibility of original documents discharged to the discharge tray by the discharge device because the discharge device is disposed relatively far away from the original document reading position.

Abstract: A document inverting-and-transporting apparatus includes a transport path, an inversion-and-transport path, a document transporting unit, a closed portion, a document length detecting unit, a comparing unit, a controlling unit. The transport path includes a first route along which the document is transported from a feeding start position to a transport direction changing position; a joining position; and a reading position. The inversion-and-transport path includes a second route along which the document is transported from the transport direction changing position to the reading position via the joining position. The closed portion constitutes a part of the inversion-and-transport path. The comparing unit compares a detected length of the document with a predetermined length larger than a length of the closed portion. The controlling unit determines whether the document is to be transported to the inversion-and-transport path, based on a result of the comparison.

The image forming apparatus is provided with a sensor for detecting the amount of stacked paper in the selected discharging bin. When the selected discharging bin is changed to a newly selected discharging bin, the discharging bins are moved by the bin elevating motor, whereby the sensor detects the amount of stacked paper in the newly selected discharging bin to which discharging can be performed after the moving. Subsequently, the sensor directs the start of image formation.
