Abstract: A cassette is used by being mounted on an image forming apparatus body and can be accommodated in a state where media, which will be supplied to the image forming apparatus body, are loaded. The cassette includes a first tray, a second tray and a slide mechanism. The first tray is able to contain multiple media. The second tray is able to contain multiple media. The slide mechanism allows the first tray and the second tray to be movable relative to each other. The first tray has an oblique surface and a first separation portion, and the second tray has an oblique surface and a second separation portion. Each of the oblique surfaces can separate an uppermost medium from other media in such a manner that distal ends of the media during delivery abut against the oblique surface. Each of the first and second separation portions guides the separated medium along the oblique surface in a paper feeding direction.

Abstract: A document size sensor is disposed on a document feed path at a location between a document tray and a juncture and on the front side in the primary scanning direction perpendicular to a document feed direction. The document size sensor is located between a sheet edge position for B4-size document sheet and a sheet edge position for A 4 -size document sheet, which are situated on the front side in the primary scanning direction. The document size sensor detects A3 - and B 4 -size document sheets but does not detect A 4 - or B5-size document sheet. Based on a detection signal from the document size sensor, judgment is made as to whether a document sheet fed from the document tray is a larger-sized document sheet or a smaller-sized document sheet.

The printer engine demands that the paper size be selected from a limited set of allowable paper sizes. A paper guide mechanism installed in the paper tray has a configuration that operates to guide a paper size having a reduced width relative to a particular allowed paper size. The paper guide mechanism allows reduced width paper to be used in the paper tray, essentially without otherwise adjusting the printing system, such that the printer engine sees the paper size as a particular allowed paper size when a reduced width paper is being used for printing.

Abstract: An image forming apparatus includes a plurality of media trays, a specifying device, an acquisition device, and a determination device. The plurality of media trays are configured to load media sheets thereon. The specifying device specifies a condition on a media sheet for an image to be formed thereon and one of the plurality of media trays. The acquisition device acquires a condition on a media sheet to be loaded in the specified media tray. The determination device determines the presence or absence of the media sheet in accordance with the specified condition in the specified media tray by comparing the specified condition and the acquired condition. In the absence of the media sheet in the specified media tray, another media tray is searched for the media sheet. When the media sheet is found in the another media tray, the media sheet is fed from the another media tray.

Abstract: A sheet reversing and discharging device of the present invention conveys each of a tab sheet and an ordinary sheet in a particular manner. Before a tab sheet enters a reversal tray, a drive roller is driven in the reverse direction while a driven roller is lowered into contact with the drive roller beforehand. The drive roller and driven roller pull in the tab sheet in the direction of conveyance until the tab of the tab sheet moves away from the tip of a path selector. The drive roller and driven roller surely convey the tab sheet to the reversal tray after the tab has moved away from the above tip. Whether or not the tab has moved away from the tip is determined on the basis of a period of time elapsed since a sheet sensor adjoining the inlet of the device has sensed the trailing edge of the tab sheet.

The supply of print medium and the resonance chamber are positioned so that the print medium covers a portion of the resonance chamber. An audio signal system then emits an audio signal to drive the resonance chamber. The frequency of the audio signal is varied until the natural resonance frequency of the chamber, as partially covered by the print medium, is discovered. The resonance frequency of the chamber will correspond to the amount of the chamber that is covered by the print medium and, hence, to the length (or width) of the print medium. In this way, the size of the print medium, whether standard or custom, can be determined.

Abstract: A detection system for detecting the size of a print medium. A hollow tube is positioned adjacent the paper or print medium. An ultrasonic transducer apparatus launches pulses of ultrasonic energy into the tube, and is responsive to ultrasonic echoes of the pulses to convert echo pulse energy into electrical detected signals. A flag positioning apparatus selectively positions a blocking flag within the tube at a location spaced from the transducer apparatus which is indicative of a print medium size.
