Abstract: Assembly of segmented seals can be problematic in areas of limited space for an introductory tapered mandrel and where there are the problems with damage to the seal surfaces 23, 24. By the present method and arrangement, a seal formed from segments 22 is expanded to an expanded state and then retained at that state by the use of a sacrificial material 26 in the gaps 25 between the segments 22 opened by expansion. The sacrificial material 26 is typically a low melting temperature wax and so is removed when the seal arrangement reaches its operating temperature.

  • Patent number: 6620361
Abstract: A method of fabricating a fluid seal for sealing a relatively rotatable member, wherein the fluid seal has an elastomeric sealing member bonded to a PTFE insert. A wafer of PTFE material has a body portion and an end portion of a greater thickness than the body portion. The wafer is placed in a mold cavity with one side of the wafer opposed to a surface portion of the mold cavity. Elastomeric material is forced into the mold cavity to form a molded preform of the elastomeric sealing member and bond the preform to an opposite side of the wafer. The molded preform and bonded wafer are removed from the mold cavity. The end portion of the wafer and an end portion of the preform are trimmed to form the fluid seal.

  • Patent number: 6290234
Abstract: A sealed, rotatable shaft assembly includes a housing that defines a bore that extends from an area exterior to the housing to an area interior to the housing. A shaft is rotatably disposed in the housing about an axis of the bore. The shaft extends through the bore between the interior area and the exterior area. An annular lip seal is disposed in the bore and is attached to one of the shaft and the housing. The lip seal extends from the one of the shaft and the housing to the other of the shaft and the housing in a contact seal so that rotation of the shaft with respect to the housing wears the lip seal to form a zero-clearance non-contacting seal. A labyrinth seal stage extends between the shaft and the housing. The labyrinth seal stage is disposed outward of the lip seal, with respect to the interior area and in communication with the lip seal.
