  • Patent number: 6595524
Abstract: A buffer seal adapted for use in a seal assembly including at least a primary seal, the seal assembly being adapted to provide a fluid seal between two relatively moving machine elements, such as a piston or rod of a first machine element moving within a cylindrical bore of a second machine element. The buffer seal comprises a sealing element and a resiliently deformable biasing element. The material, shape, and/or volume of the biasing element are selected to provide a desired biasing force sufficient to maintain a surface of the sealing element in sealing contact with a surface of the first machine element and to simultaneously maintain another surface of the sealing element in sealing contact with a surface of the second machine element. In one embodiment, the buffer seal may be configured such that axial movement and tilting of the buffer seal within its associated gland are substantially eliminated.

  • Patent number: 6588763
Abstract: A seal arrangement provides a seal between a bore and a rod movable in the bore with a gap formed between the bore and the rod. The seal arrangement includes a floating elastomeric sealing ring which is accommodated in a circumferential groove around the rod. The sealing ring sealingly engages the wall of the bore. An annular resilient biasing device is also accommodated in the groove. The biasing device acts between one wall of the groove and the sealing ring to urge the sealing ring against an opposing wall of the groove. In addition, the biasing device is configured to allow passage of fluid past the biasing device between a region of the groove disposed radially inwardly of the sealing ring and the gap between the rod and the bore on the side of the sealing ring opposite the opposing wall. The biasing device has, at least at some circumferential positions therearound, a cross-sectional profile that reduces in radial width towards one wall of the groove.

  • Patent number: 6457870
Abstract: A sealed rolling bearing in which a rolling member is disposed in a bearing space formed between an outer race and an inner race to rotate the outer race and the inner race relatively to each other, and rotation seal members are disposed at both ends of the bearing space in the axial direction thereof while a stationary seal member is disposed on the side of the inner race, thereby sealing the bearing space. The bearing is provided with a vent on the side of the inner race for approximating a fluid pressure in the bearing space to an outside fluid pressure by causing the inside of the bearing space to communicate with the outside when the state of fluid in the bearing space and state of the outside fluid have a predetermined relationship.

Abstract: A seal structure of the present invention is composed of a sliding member 2, a supporting member 1 which stores the sliding member 2 slidably, and a seal ring 5 provided between the sliding member 2 and the supporting member 1. The seal ring 5 is formed by a lip section 10 on which a pressure of a hydraulic operating fluid acts and a heel section 11 for supporting a working pressure. Since the seal structure is such that an annular pressure receiving area between an inner circumference and an outer circumference of the lip section 10 is smaller than an annular supporting area between an inner circumference and an outer circumference of the heel section 11, a pressure which acts on the seal ring 5 is reduced and deformation to a sliding surface side of the heel section 11 is prevented.

Abstract: The present invention provides an improved assembly for rotating and sealing a centrifugal dryer and a dryer including such a sealing assembly. A seal according to the present invention includes an end cap supporting a bearing that in turn rotationally supports a rotor. The end cap has an attachment portion and a seal ring including a groove receiving a v-ring seal that sealingly engages the stub shaft attached to the dryer rotor. The seal ring defines a drain cavity having at least one drain port out of which any fluid that infiltrates past the v-ring seal can drain from the end cap. The drain port is disposed at a lower level than the v-ring seal and the grease seal so that fluid can drain away without accumulating and infiltrating past the bearing grease seal and into the bearing compartment formed between the end cap and rotor the stub shaft.

Abstract: A hydrodynamic seal efficiently protects an interior cavity of an enclosure from external elements. The seal has an upper portion having a recess formed in a center section of the upper portion. A lower portion, having a raised portion, abuts the upper portion and forms a passage between the two portions. The passage between the upper and lower portions is reduced in area along the recessed and raised portions. When air with water and/or dust passes through the passage, a velocity and pressure change occurs, thereby the water and/or dust is deposited in a channel. The water and/or dust flows along the channel and is exhausted to an external so that the water and/or dust is prevented from entering the interior cavity of the enclosure.
