  • Patent number: 7186064
Abstract: A rotary tapered tool holder includes a body or shank including a front contact portion and a rear contact portion. An adapter sleeve is disposed about a portion of the shank. The adapter sleeve includes slits that allow radial expansion and contraction of the adapter sleeve. The adapter sleeve includes an inner surface formed at a first non-zero taper angle with respect to a longitudinal axis of the shank, and an outer surface formed at a second non-zero taper angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of the shank. The second taper angle is different than the first taper angle such that an interference fit between the shank and the inner surface of the adapter sleeve forces the outer surface of the adapter sleeve into positive contact with a tapered bore of a spindle of the rotary tapered tool holder.

Abstract: A modular tool connection assembly includes a housing which defines the main axis of assembly with a linear bore for containing the components of the assembly. The housing contains a connector component presenting a first taper portion. The connector is retained in the linear bore of the housing with a spring interposed between the connector and the housing. A tool containing a second taper portion is placed in axial engagement with the first taper causing the components to be securely connected. The spring limits the force applied between the taper portions allowing them to be disconnected easily.

Abstract: A chuck includes a holder body, a clamp sleeve, and a large number of needle rollers. The holder body has a shank portion, a flange, and a chuck sleeve. The clamp sleeve is fitted onto the outer circumference of the chuck sleeve such that the clamp sleeve is rotatable and axially movable relative to the chuck sleeve. The needle rollers are disposed between the chuck sleeve and the clamp sleeve over the entire circumference. The clamp sleeve is rotated to cause the needle rollers to revolve spirally along the outer circumferential surface of the chuck sleeve while rotating about their own axes in order to decrease and restore the diameter of the chuck sleeve. A thrust member is disposed between the end surface of the flange opposite the shank portion and a corresponding end surface of the clamp sleeve.

  • Patent number: 6871859
Abstract: A toolholder and insert arrangement includes an insert having a cutting portion and a shank portion disposed at a base of the cutting portion. The toolholder has a first end attachable to a spindle and a second end having a shank-receiving opening. When the toolholder is at ordinary room temperature, the shank-receiving opening is smaller than the shank portion. Upon heating of the toolholder to a predetermined temperature above the ordinary room temperature and above an ordinary operating temperature, the shank-receiving opening expands to become at least as large as the shank portion. Upon cooling of the toolholder to a temperature below the predetermined temperature and after insertion of the shank portion in the shank-receiving opening, the shank-receiving opening shrinks to generally conform to a shape of the shank portion.

Abstract: A tool holder includes a plurality of elastic engagement pieces arrayed along an outer perimeter of a shank. During and after assembly, the elastic engagement pieces elastically abut at least an inner surface of a tapered hole in a main shaft joined to the tool holder and deform slightly in a radial direction. The elastic engagement pieces provide uniform engagement force with the main shaft over a broad surface area. An elastic flange provides additional elastic engagement and easy separation from the main shaft. Together, the elastic engagement pieces and elastic flange reliably engage and securely attach the main shaft to the tool holder while aiding disengagement.

The junction is characterized by the fact that the recess (7) and the projection (33) have practically the identical angle of taper, that the projection (33) is structured to be practically non-resilient, and the wall (9) that surrounds the recess (7) of the first tool part (holder (1)), is structured to be resilient, and that the two tool parts (1, 31) are provided with flat surfaces (23, 37) that rest against one another when the two tool parts (1, 31) are connected. It is essential that the two tool parts are secured together in the assembled state of the junction (1), in an axial direction by means of a clamping device in such a way that the wall (9) of the first tool part (1) is expanded.

  • Patent number: 6352395
Abstract: A tool holder includes a holder body which in turn includes a shank portion, a flange portion, and a tool attachment portion; a taper cone fitted to the shank portion; an elastic member interposed between a rear-end face of the flange portion and a front-end face of the taper cone; and a stopper member disposed on the shank portion so as to support a rear-end face of the taper cone. The outer surface of the taper cone is tapered at an angle equal to that at which the wall surface of a taper hole formed in a spindle of a machine tool is tapered. The inner surface of the taper cone and the outer surface of the shank portion are equally tapered at an angle smaller than the angle at which the outer surface of the taper cone is tapered. Through drawing of the holder body, the taper cone expands radially to thereby be tightly held within the taper hole. A spacer is bonded to the end face of the spindle so as to eliminate a gap which is formed between the flange portion and a spindle.
