Abstract: A retainer for holding a tool bit on an impact hammer including a shielding ring at the retainer distal end. The retainer includes an axially slidable sleeve whereby tool bits may be selectively exchanged on the retainer and whereby tool bits are secured in the retainer for use thereof. The sleeve is axially slidable toward the retainer distal end for placing the retainer in the locked or in-use position, and is axially slidable away from the distal end against the force of a spring for placing the retainer in the tool bit release position. The shielding ring extends radially beyond the axially slidable sleeve for preventing inadvertent axial movement of the sleeve to the release position by debris and/or objects which come in contact with the retainer distal end, and thereby aiding in the prevention of inadvertent release of the tool bit during use.

  • Patent number: 6464235
Abstract: A lathe chuck has a chuck body centered on and rotatable about a main axis and formed with a plurality of radially extending jaw-guide grooves and, transverse to the grooves, with respective guide passages each in turn formed with an abutment. Respective jaws displaceable in the grooves each have at least one tooth exposed in the respective guide passage and respective control rods displaceable along the passages each have at least one tooth meshing with the tooth of the respective jaw. A control pin is axially displaceable in each rod between an extended position projecting into the respective jaw-guide groove and a retracted position. The control pins are displaced on engagement with the teeth of the respective jaws into the retracted positions. A latch pin is axially displaceable in each rod between an extended latching position engaging the respective abutment and preventing movement of the respective rod in the respective passage and a retracted position permitting such movement.

  • Patent number: 5911578
Abstract: A head assembly for a medical handpiece includes a head housing and a rotor spindle contained in the housing. The spindle defines a longitudinal through-bore with an internal screw thread. An adjustable chuck is received within the through-bore of the spindle and has a complementary external screw thread adapted for mating with the internal thread of the spindle. The chuck has a top opening forming a keyway and a bottom opening adapted for receiving and holding a bur. A chuck key is attached to the housing, and includes a hand grip at its top end for being manipulated by a user and a chuck engaging bottom end. The chuck key is axially moveable between an operative position and an inoperative position. Upon rotation of the chuck key in the operative position, the chuck threadably moves relative to the spindle to an open position for receiving and removing the bur.

  • Patent number: 5901967
Abstract: In a changeable chuck system which can grip and release a workpiece by means of a chuck C by itself, fluid shut-off valves 20a and 20b are provided on a fluid supply portion provided on the tip of a main spindle 2 of a machine tool. When the chuck C is mounted on the main spindle 2, the fluid shut-off valves 20a and 20b are automatically connected to fluid couplers 111a and 111b provided behind the chuck C, and a jaw operating cylinder 90 provided in the chuck C is actuated by a fluid supplied from a rear portion of the main spindle 2 to open and close gripping jaws 93. Thus, the gripping jaws 93 can be operated by means of the jaw operating cylinder 90 provided in the chuck C when the chuck C is mounted on the tip of the main spindle 2.

  • Patent number: 5816585
Abstract: A chuck system for machine tools with a rotating jaw chuck has clamping jaws of the jaw chuck which can be radially adjusted relative to an axis of rotation. The clamping jaws are displaceably mounted in a bearer connected with a drive shaft, and in which engagement openings for the introduction of an adjustment tool for the positioning of the clamping jaws are arranged in the region of the bearer. The bearer is surrounded by a protective sheath that is guided so as to be displaceable in the direction of the axis of rotation. The protective sheath comprises through openings, which are arranged so as to be congruent to the engagement openings in a handling position of the protective sheath, and are arranged so as to be offset to the engagement openings in an operating position of the protective sheath. In the operating position, the clamping jaws are radially surrounded, at least in regions, by the protective sheath.
