  • Patent number: 6182545
Abstract: A conventional ball lock mechanism has been replaced with a wedge adapted to lock a tool, such as a punch, forming tool or die bushing in a retainer block in which the tool can be accurately positioned relative to the retainer block. The tool is released by moving the wedge away from the retainer block. The inclined surface of the wedge may be inclined upward or downward at an acute angle to the vertical, or the wedge may have both upwardly and downwardly inclined surfaces. The upper portion of the tool is preferably non-circular and is held within a tool cavity formed when the wedge is disposed in the retainer block. One surface of the wedge (its tool-mating surface) is adapted to correspond to the surface of the tool in contact with the wedge. The assembly of wedge slidably disposed within the retainer block is preferably used with a hardened backing plate rather than being secured directly to the die shoe.

  • Patent number: 5056968
Abstract: The device includes a chuck designed to be secured to a working tool and which has a front cavity for receiving an end of a drilling rod and a gripping device for fastening the end of the rod in this cavity. The gripping device is actuated by pneumatic or hydraulic pistons, sliding in a cylindrical chamber closed at the rear by a plug. In order to avoid rapid wear of this plug, a spring is arranged between the said plug and the adjacent face of the piston, the spring being strong enough to keep the piston away from the plug.

  • Patent number: 4756538
Abstract: The invention relates to a clamping device used for making up or breaking apart joints of drill pipe, drill collars and the like in mouse hole pipe during oil drilling operation. A clamping means of the device firstly clamps the drill pipe therebetween during its moving down and centripetally simultaneously by the self-weight of drill pipe to be clamped, then tightly clamps the drill pipe with a force generated by rollers' moving inwardly to the center of the device along the concavity of the turning plate with the rotation of a kelly. It can be used instead of a back tong when making-up joint in mouse hole pipe with a tong.

  • Patent number: 4638692
Abstract: A wire gripper (48) includes a housing (50,52,56) that defines a chamber (62) which has sidewalls (64) that taper in an axial direction. Jaws (66) are closely and slidably received into chamber (62). Axial spring (74) biases jaws (66) axially outwardly relative to chamber (62). Radial springs (78) bias jaws (66) toward sidewalls (64). A double-acting cylinder (94) moves housing (50,52,56) axially outwardly to tighten jaws (66) around a wire (200), and axially inwardly to move jaws (66) against jaw stop (88) to open jaws (66). Preferably, axial movement of wire (200) pulls pivoting blades (6,8) closed. Gripper (48) may be modified to cut or punch wire (200) rather than grip it.

  • Patent number: 4594127
Abstract: Method and apparatus for suspending a seed crystal over a fixed crucible containing a melt from a rotary and axially operable vertically disposed drive adaptor comprising the steps of forming a tubular receptacle adapted to be detachably secured at its upper end coaxially to the adapter, and having an internal bore formed therein with an internal step near its lower end for supporting the seed. The seed is formed in the shape of a cylinder of a diameter to pass axially through the stepped bore of the receptacle and having its upper end conically tapered downwardly and inwardly from the upper end thereof. A split sleeve is formed to be receivable downwardly within the internal bore of the tubular receptacle except as limited by the internal steps of the bore of the receptacle. The sleeve has an internal conical taper complimentary to the taper of the upper end of the seed about which it is disposed before insertion of the seed and sleeve within the bore of the receptacle.

  • Patent number: 4566705
Abstract: The drill spindle of a deep well drilling machine has a sleeve-like extension with a conical internal surface which is complementary to conical external surfaces on an annulus of claws forming part of a clamping device which is inserted into the extension and has an axial passage for the shank of a rotary tool. A set of dished springs normally urges a ring against a conical end face of the clamping device whereby the latter urges its claws against the internal surface of the extension and the claws transmit torque from the spindle to the shank of the tool. If the transmission of torque is to be terminated, the piston of a fluid-operated motor is caused to shift the ring against the opposition of the dished springs whereby the claws relax the force with which they engage the shank and the latter can be extracted from the passage of the clamping device.

  • Patent number: 4298074
Abstract: The present surgical tool uses high frequency impulses to replace rotating or oscillating members in cutting through or inserting materials into bone. One embodiment comprises a chisel which uses high frequency impulses to remove bone or other hard material. Because of the high forces developed, a novel holder for the chisel to the tool is disclosed. Another embodiment is a wire driver which uses high frequency impulses to drive wire into bone or other tissue. A novel holder for the wire is disclosed which allows wire to be pulled from the tool so that it can be inserted into the bone but prevents wire from slipping back into the tool during the driving operation. The chisel and the wire are driven by a novel pneumatic impulse motor. The motor includes a piston hammer which is mounted in a chamber, and air ports at either end of the chamber alternately direct air to one side of the piston hammer and to the other side of the piston hammer to drive it along the chamber.
