  • Patent number: 8533930
Abstract: A manually actuated robotic tool changer includes a rapid coupling mechanism. The tool changer includes a master unit having a piston moveable along its axis between an unlocked position and a fully locked position, and a tool unit that is coupled to the master unit when the units are adjacent and the piston is moved to the fully locked position. A piston movement control mechanism selectively allows free axial motion of the piston between the unlocked position and a nearly locked position, when the control mechanism is actuated. The piston may be biased toward the locked position, allowing the master and tool units to be rapidly coupled by positioning the units adjacently, actuating the control mechanism to allow the piston to rapidly advance to a nearly locked position, releasing the control mechanism to restrict free axial motion of the piston, and manually advancing the piston to a fully locked position.

  • Patent number: 8061718
Abstract: A bit holder for a rotary tool is disclosed herein. In one embodiment, the bit holder comprises a drive shaft with an elongated bit channel configured to receive a tool bit for the rotary tool. A cavity is provided in a peripheral wall of the drive shaft. The cavity extends in a radial direction from the bit channel to an outer portion of the drive shaft. A moveable lock member is positioned in the cavity of the drive shaft. A collet is positioned in the bit channel apart from the cavity. The collet includes a collapsible end portion configured to clamp down on the tool bit. A collet nut rotatably engages the drive shaft and is moveable between a release position and a lock position. In the lock position the collet nut clamps the collapsible end portion of the collet while also forcing the lock member into the bit cavity.

  • Patent number: 6168170
Abstract: A chuck is provided for use with a manual or powered driver, such as a drill. The chuck has a body member with angularly disposed passageways formed therethrough. A plurality of jaws are slidably positioned within the angularly disposed passageways. The jaws grip upon a tool shank inserted into the body member. A nut is rotatably mounted on the body member and has nut threads defined on an inner circumference thereof in engagement with the jaw threads. A sleeve member is in driving rotational engagement with the nut whereby when the sleeve is rotated with respect to the body member, the jaws are also moved within the passageways. A rotational stop is defined between the nut and jaws wherein upon the jaws reaching a predetermined position within the passageways, further rotation of the nut in an opening direction is prevented. The stop comprises a radially extending surface defining an end of the nut threads. The radially extending surface contacts a side surface of at least one of the jaws.

A generally cylindrical body has a forward section and a rearward section, the rearward section adapted to mate with the drive shaft of the driver. A gripping mechanism is actuatable to a closed position in which the gripping mechanism axially and rotationally retains a tool with respect to the body and to an open position in which the gripping mechanism does not so retain a tool. An annular nut is disposed about the body and has a threaded portion in threaded engagement with the gripping mechanism so that rotation of the nut about the body in a closing direction actuates the gripping mechanism to the closed position and rotation of the nut in an opening direction, opposite the closing direction, actuates the gripping mechanism to an open position.
