Patent number: 5257557Abstract: There is disclosed a direct acting lock mechanism to secure a tool within a driver which is useful for securing open channel sockets used to securing aerospace fasteners in a driver. These sockets have a flatted shank, typically hexagonal in cross section, and are received in a socket receptacle of the driver which has a cross section matching that of the shank. In the preferred embodiment, the flatted surfaces of the shank are formed to have substantially coextensive flats which are displaced through an angular increment of at least about 15 degrees. The flats do not extend the entire length of the shank, however, thus providing a thin shelf which has a cross section which matches the internal flatted surface of the socket receptacle of the driver.Type: GrantFiled: March 26, 1992Date of Patent: November 2, 1993Assignee: VSI CorporationInventor: Ronald W. Patent number: 5167478Abstract: The present invention is a tool holder which permits lateral insertion and removal of a tool means into and from the holder thereby making it unnecessary to move the machine or work piece to provide excess clearance. The tool holder includes a main body having a shallow tool cavity formed in one end thereof for receiving the tool means. A locking element having a u-shaped collar is rotatably mounted to the main body for clamping the tool means within the tool cavity. The u-shaped collar defines a tool slot having a tool slot opening which extends from the side of the locking element. When the locking element is in an unlocked position, the tool slot opening aligns radially with the open side of the tool cavity to permit lateral insertion and removal of the tool means into and from the cavity. When the locking element is rotated to the locked position, tool slot opening is moved out of alignment with the open side of the cavity thereby preventing removal of the to tool means.Type: GrantFiled: April 3, 1990Date of Patent: December 1, 1992Assignee: Kennametal Inc.Inventor: Valdas S. Patent number: 4976174Abstract: An attachment to a socket wrench and the like carries a rocker arm in a recess in the body of the attachment. The rocker arm rocks about a shaft inserted transversely of the arm in a pair of apertures in the attachment body. At one end of the arm a compression spring seated in a concavity in the attachment body urges a detent carried on the other end of the arm to enter through an opening into the engaging receptacle at the other end of the body.A nut forced into the engaging receptacle cams the end of the detent outwardly of the receptacle, and when the nut is seated, the action of the spring on the arm causes the nut to be retained. By simply pressing on the arm against the spring, the spring may be further compressed to release a nut in the engaging receptacle.Type: GrantFiled: December 5, 1989Date of Patent: December 11, 1990Inventor: Arthur Walsh

Patent number: 4941783Abstract: A drilling device is made up of a hollow cylindrical retainer and an annular drill bit. One of the retainer and drill bit has recesses for receiving projections on the other so that the two parts can be detachably connected together. Each recess has a first and a second axially extending section with the second section extending circumferentially from the opposite axially extending sides of the first section. Accordingly, the second section forms stop shoulders extending transversely of the axial direction for contacting circumferentially extending edges of the projections. As a result, the retainer can transmit rotary motion to the drill bit in both rotational directions while maintaining the two parts in connected engagement.Type: GrantFiled: March 28, 1989Date of Patent: July 17, 1990Assignee: Hilti AktiengesellschaftInventor: Elmar Maier
