Patent number: 8381375Abstract: A crosslapper receives a card web and folds it into a lap intended to be needle-punched or consolidated by other ways. The web includes zones which are more condensed, having a spectrum of orientation of fibers with a component parallel to the width of the web, alternating with less condensed zones having a longitudinal unidirectional spectrum of orientations. The zones which are less condensed are used to form the edge zones of the lap. The result is that the lap has different respective spectra of orientation which pre-compensate for the unwanted changes produced by the needle-punching or other consolidation which follows. A needle-punched lap is obtained having a uniform MD/CD ratio (relationship between longitudinal and respectively transverse tensile strengths) or having a sought profile of the MD/CD ratio across the width of the lap.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 2009Date of Patent: February 26, 2013Assignee: Asselin-ThibeauInventors: Cathia Dos Santos, Michel Colotte, Jean-Louis Dupont, François Louis

Patent number: 5305504Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming a scrim with fibers oriented in the bias direction comprising of at least two belts and at least one plate which forms a three dimensional mandrel over which the bias scrim is formed. The plate is shaped so that any cross-section taken perpendicularly to the direction of travel of the scrim, the perimeter of the scrim formed by fibers wrapped around the machine in the plane of the cross-section is constant. This constant is equal to twice the final width of the scrim from selvedge to selvedge. The scrim is formed by wrapping fibers around the front of the assembly while the belts move toward the rear end of the machine. The movement of the belts carry the fibers to the rear of the assembly as they are wrapped around the assembly. The belts travel at substantially the same speed in opposite directions. The ratio of the speed that the fibers are wrapped around the assembly and the speed of the belts determine the fiber angle of the bias scrim.Type: GrantFiled: January 15, 1993Date of Patent: April 26, 1994Assignee: Milliken Research CorporationInventor: John B. Patent number: 4578141Abstract: An apparatus and method for continuously forming a succession of individual, full width, weft yarns by means of a turret rotating in a horizontal plane on a vertical axis and carrying a plurality of weft yarn packages. The weft yarns are drawn off the packages to full width by two pairs of belts, carrying spaced pairs of pins, advancing along a generally horizontal path parallel to the plane of the turret and parallel to the plane in which the weft strands travel, then cut off at full width and spread out by clamp belts and cables to extend laterally and horizontally across the machine. A plurality of warp yarns, each carrying adhesive are laid on the weft yarns and the resulting skrim unitized on a heated drum with the assistance of heated air from a blower.Type: GrantFiled: January 13, 1984Date of Patent: March 25, 1986Assignee: Bay Mills LimitedInventors: Lester Gidge, Ronald P. Patent number: 4467506Abstract: A method is described for making a fiber-reinforced composite film sheet (fiber/film laminate) by continuously forming a first planar lap from a plurality of machine-direction (MD) fibers, continuously forming a second planar lap from a single fiber as transverse-direction (TD) reaches which are connected by 180.degree. loops by stretching the fiber between a horizontally diverging pair of chain assemblies, continuously straddling both laps with a pair of co-extruded films which extend sidewardly beyond the loops, vertically converging the films and fibers to form a sandwich, edge sealing the sandwich within strips close to its side edges but inwardly of the loops, lifting the loops from the chain assemblies, sidewardly smoothing and tautening the sandwich, and laminating the sandwich with heat and pressure to form the composite film sheet and application for carrying out this method.Type: GrantFiled: December 6, 1982Date of Patent: August 28, 1984Assignee: Mobil Oil CorporationInventor: Paul V. Patent number: 4409059Abstract: Apparatus for manufacturing tire breaker fabric comprising a cord feed unit, guide means for guiding a single cord between two sets of retaining means attached one to either edge of an endless belt to form an elongate sheet of parallel closely spaced cords laid in zig-zag fashion such that the edges of the sheet are formed by a series of folded cord edges which are held by the retaining means. Stepwise drive means advances the belt and cord assembly to elastomer applying means for applying elastomer to one surface of the cord assembly.Type: GrantFiled: October 9, 1981Date of Patent: October 11, 1983Assignee: W & A Bates LimitedInventors: Eric Holroyd, David J. Patent number: 4089720Abstract: Method and apparatus for making a nonwoven fabric wherein a first group of filaments are projected in a longitudinal direction into the nip of a pair of nipped and moving collecting surfaces in such a manner that the filaments fold into and are captured and held by the nip with spans of the filaments lying in the plane of the nip and at the same time projecting a second group of filaments in a longitudinal direction toward one of the collecting surfaces at a location spaced from the nip. The second group of filaments impinges on an impact plate positioned above the collecting surface and is pulled off the impact plate by the moving collecting surface, this causing the filaments in the second group to extend primarily in the machine direction. The moving collecting surfaces carry the groups of filaments into contact with each other to form a nonwoven fabric which is subsequently bonded in a conventional manner to form a finished fabric.Type: GrantFiled: November 28, 1975Date of Patent: May 16, 1978Assignee: Monsanto CompanyInventor: David J. Patent number: 4080232Abstract: A method wherein a set of threads moved to and fro by means of a traversing device is laid down on the outer convex surface of a rotating cylindrical member, said to-and-fro motion of said set of threads being in the direction parallel to the axis of rotation of the cylindrical member, and wherein said threads are retained on the convex surface by retaining means and are removed from the cylindrical member.Type: GrantFiled: October 13, 1976Date of Patent: March 21, 1978Inventor: Volker Friedrich

Patent number: RE33418Abstract: Non-woven, bias laid fabrics, where the various fabric layers are held together by external means, such as stitching, and wherein, preferably, at least two of the layers are formed at an angle of from 30.degree. to 150.degree. relative to the long axis of the fabric, are formed by directing at least two pluralities of yarns back and forth across the width of the forming fabric, to be wrapped around or mounted on a series of needles formed on a moving conveyor, one conveyor being placed on either side and moving in the direction of the long axis of the fabric. Speed of movement of the yarns can be determined by the speed of movement of the mechanism for the machine operated to hold the various fabric layers together; preferably said machine mechanism moves more slowly near the ends of each cycle, so that yarn carriers are similarly slowed at either end of the forming fabric width, aiding in making successive courses of yarn lie parallel to each other without the necessity for extra equipment.Type: GrantFiled: November 16, 1987Date of Patent: November 6, 1990Assignee: JB Group, Inc.Inventor: Ronald G.
