Trailing Vehicle Patents (Class 280/204)
  • Patent number: 5427396
Abstract: A trailer connected to a vehicle to carry an extra load. The trailer has a bracket with flexible arms and a fixative. The flexible arms are adapted to form bearings together with a bicycle rear wheel axle. Because of the flexibility of the flexible arms the bracket can be pivotally connected to the axle of the rear wheel of a two-wheel vehicle without disassembling the vehicle while connecting and disconnecting it. That simplifies and accelerates the process of connecting the trailer to and disconnecting it from the vehicle. A passenger version of the trailer has rigid child chairs with safety belts mounted on the trailer base, and a safety frame, preventing children from getting hurt. The frame is pivotally mounted to the base and can be rotated about 180 degrees until it touches the ground, opening a space for loading and unloading the trailer and having more support points to prevent the trailer from falling over.

  • Patent number: 5348327
Abstract: A collapsible surf or sailboard dolly having the option to be manually towed behind one walking or be trailered behind a bicycle using a new and improved universal hitch attached to a bicycle. The bicycle hitch mounts generally horizontally to the bicycles accessory holes and clamped around frames chainstay holes. The dolly has a rear main wheeled support assembly strapped to a board. The main support assembly has wheels which are removable (in seconds) without the use of any tools. The wheels are held to the assembly with a Velcro and strap wrapping arrangement which positively hold the wheels to the main support tube. The dolly has a separate arm structure which straps to the nose of the board and is held onto the board by the wedging effect of the strapping arrangement. The rear support assembly is held to the board with the same wedging effect. A tightened center coupling strap causes the front arm structure and rear main support strapping to wedge over the board.

  • Patent number: 5240266
Abstract: A hitch to be used with a one-wheeled trailer to be towed by a bicycle, motorcycle, moped, or other cycle or two-wheeled vehicle. The hitch is mounted relatively permanently to the seat post of the towing cycle but is free to swivel around said seat post as the trailer tracks around curves. The frame of the trailer to be towed has a frame the front reach of which consists of transversely disposed rounded bar or tubing. The essential universal-joint connection that makes a one-wheeled trailer feasible is completed by this rounded front reach of the frame captured rotatably within a horizontally disposed, rearward-facing slot in the hitch block. The capture is completed by means of a vertical, quickly removable pin preferably containing a spring-ball plunger. The pin is inserted behind said bar or tubing.

  • Patent number: 5011170
Abstract: This invention relates to trailers and in particular to trailers for use with bicycles and motorcycles. This trailer will secure belongings inside, protecting them from the elements. The trailer is easily hooked and unhooked in a matter of seconds and is unmatched in its handling ability as it travels behind the cycle or motorcycle. The trailer may be removed 90 degrees relative to the bike when moving or parked. Locking it in such a position while parked prevents it from being wheeled away. The cyclist is a much more visible object on the road due to the added width the trailer provides and the trailer should contain reflectors or lights for added visibility. A pivot assembly allows up and down motion which will enable the trailer to follow undulations in the road or terrain; allows horizontal or sideways motion to enable the trailer to follow left or right turns by the cyclist and prevents rotation in the horizontal axis to enable the trailer to follow the cyclist's lean on corners.

The forward end of the trailer includes an upstanding goose-neck tongue and the receptacle constitutes bracing between the upper end of the standard and at least a mid-height portion of the tongue. Further, the forward end of the tongue includes a hitch assembly for coupling the forward end of the tongue to the upstanding seat supporting shank of an associated bicycle.

Abstract: A convertible handle for a cargo vehicle can be used for manually pushing the vehicle or for connecting the vehicle to a tractor. The handle has a towing part that can be used either as a stand or a towbar, and a grip part that can be used either as a grip or as structural support for the vehicle body. The handle rotates from one position to the other, pivoting about a pivot on the vehicle body; and, screws or the like fix the handle in the desired position.

Abstract: A two-wheeled bicycle trailer has a frame with a double tongue having two arms that extend on either side of a rear of a bicycle. The arms each have flat hands that are pivotally connected to said arms at a forward end thereof. A free end of said bands is pivotally connected on either side of said bicycle frame in the vicinity of a rear axle. As the trailer is towed and, particularly, as the bicycle turns, the bands automatically adjust for variations in the vertical height of the frame.

  • Patent number: 4721320
Abstract: A bicycle trailer hitch which attaches to the bicycle between the chain stay and the seat stay at the crotch formed at the convergence of the two stays, the method of attachment being by three attaching members affixed to and extending inward from a main hitch member to which the bicycle trailer is connected. The three attaching members include a cone-plate member, wherein the intersection of a cone and a plate form a notch which engages the crotch between the two stays; a fixed finger located beneath the chain stay, and a movable finger located above the seat stay. Movement of the movable finger towards the seat stay is accomplished a pivoting member and a threaded tightening member, each attached pivotally at one end to the main hitch member, wherein the non-attached, threaded end of the tightening member passes through an aperture in the pivoting member so that rotation of a threaded knob engaged to the tightening member past the pivoting member will cause the knob to press against the pivoting member.

  • Patent number: 4685691
Abstract: This trailer comprises a U-shape load-carrying casing with a hitching bar across the free ends of the legs of the casing. The center of said cross-bar is hitched to the vehicle between the two wheels thereof by means of a universal joint hitch. The load carrying casing extends on both sides of the vehicle and across the back thereof. Two wheels support the back of the casing. The universal hitch enables the vehicle, such as a motorcycle, to roll, rotate or pitch relative to the trailer, such as when taking curves and/or riding on bumpy roads of grade and down-grade. The hitch is positioned below the horizontal plane passing through the vehicle axles and in front of the center of gravity of the vehicle. The trailer and vehicle assembly is very stable both while riding and braking. Also, the portions of the casing extending on both sides of the vehicle constitute a protection for the vehicle rider and passenger.

Abstract: A hitch for connecting a trailer to a vehicle, especially a motorcycle or land-roving vehicle. The hitch comprises two couplings, including a conventional ball member adjacent one end, and a ball-bearing assembly located intermediate the ball member and the means for attaching the hitch to the vehicle. The ball-bearing assembly is capable of rotational movement about a horizontal axis for a full 360 degrees. The hitch thus provides unlimited rotational movement between the vehicle and the trailer in addition to the conventional pivotal movement provided by the ball member coupling.

  • Patent number: 4588199
Abstract: A swivel connection adapted to be interposed between a motorcycle, or other small vehicle, and a trailer being towed thereby in order to isolate any variation of the vertical orientation of the motorcycle from the trailer. The swivel connection comprises a channel member secured to the usual hitch assembly normally provided for the motorcycle, and a box member secured to the channel member for receiving a spindle member therein. The spindle member is rigidly secured to the box member and extends axially outwardly therefor for rotational connection with a sleeve member secured to the usual tongue provided on the trailer. The rotation connection between the spindle member and sleeve member permits the vertical variations of the motorcycle to be absorbed, thus isolating the trailer therefrom.
