  • Patent number: 8496094
Abstract: A coil spring suspension designed for a handlebar-steered vehicle. The coil spring suspension generally includes a first tube, a coil spring, a shaft and a guide. A first end of the coil spring is disposed within the first tube and fixedly supported proximate a first end of the first tube. The coil spring extends beyond a second end of the first tube. The shaft fixedly supports a second end of the coil spring. The shaft and the first tube are slidably displaced relative to each other upon suspension loading to lengthwise compress the coil spring. The guide is disposed within the first tube and connected to the coil spring between the first and second ends of the coil spring. The guide is displaced with the coil spring under suspension loading and limiting lateral displacement of the coil spring.

Abstract: The present invention provides a shock absorber with compliant members. Shock absorption is provided by the bending and rebound of curved, flexible arms. The deflection and the damping capabilities of the shock absorber are determined by the dimensions, curvature, and material modulus of elasticity of these compliant members. The shock absorber with compliant members technology may be applied to a bicycle front fork shock absorber and a rear shock absorber, both described herein. The benefits of a shock absorber with compliant members are that it is light-weight, it is simple in design, it has few movable joints, it can be designed to have precise flexion and damping characteristics, and it is resilient in harsh conditions.

Abstract: A suspension fork for a bicycle includes at least one stanchion tube and at least one slider tube interacting therewith and a wheel receiving space adjacent thereto. The suspension fork includes a damper system with a damper chamber divided into a first chamber and a second chamber by a movable piston. The suspension fork further includes a damping device for the rebound stage and a damping device for the compression stage are provided. A shut-off valve is provided for selectively locking the rebound stage. The damper chamber comprises a connecting duct with a flow damper that connects the second chamber with the first chamber when the stanchion tube and the slider tube interacting therewith are compressed more than a predefined distance such that in the case of a forceful compression and with the shut-off valve of the rebound stage activated, slow decompression is allowed up to a damper position as defined by the predetermined distance.

Abstract: A suspension structure includes a pair of right and left cushion units. The right cushion unit is constituted of a compression coil spring and a right damper, and the left cushion unit is constituted of only a left damper having an outer diameter smaller than a diameter of the compression coil spring and larger than a diameter of the right damper. The left cushion unit is constituted of only the left damper and does not include the compression coil spring and hence, the suspension structure can be simplified. Further, in the left cushion unit, the left damper does not slide relative to the compression coil spring in performing a stroke and hence, no friction is generated.

  • Patent number: 8181978
Abstract: In a preferred embodiment, an ultra-light weight suspension fork for bicycles that provides smooth action of the suspension system that hitherto has been unachievable. This fork assembly contains a telescoping mechanism located in the head tube of the bicycle that uses linear roller bearings to reduce stiction and prevent torsional losses, but limits weight by only using two such bearings. Side-to-side load is eliminated by the use of two longitudinal members in close proximity to the inner tube of this telescoping mechanism. The telescoping mechanism is coupled to the wheel via an arched single-sided fork crown designed to maintain torsional and braking stiffness. The arched crown contains arches in two dimensions. The fork crown is coupled to the wheel via a shaped fork tube whose wall is thickened while the outside diameter is reduced so that the connection point to the axle mechanism has the same outside diameter as the fork tube thereby enabling significant strengthening of the assembly.

Abstract: An uncomplicated bicycle device for fastening a steering tube with a stem tube includes two compression rings and a fastening set. The compression ring is fixed on a stem opening by inserting the lateral surface portion into the stem tube and the protruding portion abutted against the stem opening. The steering tube is inserted into the compression rings. A fastening set includes a star nut placed into the steering tube, a cap covering the stem opening and abutted against the compression ring, a cap bolt for screwing the cap and the star nut together. The present invention only uses the compression rings and the fastening set instead of any thread structure and lock nuts for fastening the steering tube within the stem tube. Thus, the adjuster can quickly calibrate and assemble the steering tube within the stem tube again.

Abstract: A steering damper can generate a smaller damping force according to a first damping force characteristic or a larger damping force according to a second damping force characteristic by controlling a flow of hydraulic oil during a steering operation of a steering member. When the associated vehicle is running at a relatively low or medium speed and is not accelerating, and if an operational speed of the steering damper is lower than a predetermined value, damping force according to the first damping force characteristic can be generated in the steering damper. On the other hand, when the operational speed of the steering damper is equal to or higher than the predetermined value, damping force according to the second damping force characteristic can be generated in the steering damper.
