Abstract: A shopping cart is equipped with an electrical/electronic component(s), such as a shopping assistant, that is electrically powered by a rechargeable power supply. A system is provided for continuously recharging the power supply as the shopping cart is propelled by the customer. In one embodiment, the wheels of the shopping cart are linked to a potential energy storage component, such as a coil spring. The spring is wound with each movement of the shopping cart, regardless of the distance that the cart travels. When the coil spring has been wound to a pre-determined torque, the spring is released to drive an input to an electrical generator. Once the potential energy in the spring has been dissipated the winding cycle begins again.

Abstract: A shopping cart having a displaceable front wall, with or without a load carrying apparatus associated with the front wall to provide a horizontal support for safely carrying loads that are longer than the length of the cart and must sit on top of the cart basket to be transported. The front wall and support (if employed) may be used with any conventional shopping cart having nestable or non-nestable baskets. The front wall is hingedly attached to a lower structural member of the cart basket. The front wall is movable from a first retracted position in which it lays substantially in registry with the bottom wall of the cart basket, allowing the basket to be nested into an adjacent cart, to an in-use position in which it forms a shopping cart front wall, to a second retracted position in which it is resting underneath and substantially in registry with the bottom wall of the basket, also allowing the basket to be nested into an adjacent cart.

  • Publication number: 20100059947
Abstract: A combination cart and safety ladder assembly for storing items selected for purchase and retrieving items from otherwise unreachable store shelves. The combination has a base, a plurality of wheels joined with the base, a cart section, and a ladder section having a plurality of steps. Preferably, the ladder section is moveable between a first position in which the ladder section prevents the wheels from transporting the base and a second position in which the wheels are free to transport the base. Most preferably, a resilient member biases the ladder section to its second position such that the wheels are free to transport the base unless the biasing force is overcome. When a user mounts the steps, the biasing force of the resilient member is overcome thereby moving the ladder section into its first position for preventing movement of the base and safely allowing the user to retrieve an item.

The basket is closed by a pivoted rear gate at its rear end. Two or more carts can be nested together by pushing the front wall of the basket of a first cart through the rear frame beneath the fixed child seat of a second cart, simultaneously pivoting the rear gate upwardly to allow the basket of the first cart to enter the basket of the second cart. The side walls are inclined upwardly from the child seat to the front end of the basket.
