Passenger Safety Guards Patents (Class 280/748)
  • Patent number: 4179086
Abstract: An arm restraint system for use with an aircraft ejection seat to prevent limb flailing on ejection. Long straps, which are normally loose to allow unimpeded arm and body movement of the seated crewman, are retained high on the side of the shoulder area by a flap with a Velcro fastener and by ring members on the seat buckle and on the seat frame. During the ejection sequence, the Velcro fasteners are pulled apart by the action of the straps which move downward and pin the crewman's arms against his side and lower abdomen thereby preventing flail upon entry of the crewman into the airstream.

  • Patent number: 4154472
Abstract: A method of and an apparatus for protecting an occupant of a vehicle during a crash comprising reorienting the occupant quickly during the first half of a crash cycle period into an energy absorbing position with occupant's buttocks and femurs being repositioned for causing energy absorption during the second half of the crash cycle. In the preferred apparatus, the occupant's hips are lowered and his knees are raised to place him in an energy absorbing position within about 50 milliseconds and the occupant is married to the vehicle as it crushes during the last half of the crash cycle. The buildup of "g" forces is delayed; the maximum "g" forces imparted to the occupant is reduced; and the occupant's displacement is shortened with the invention.

  • Patent number: 4103625
Abstract: A supporting or stabilizing device, especially for a moving vehicle, in which at least one rod is provided mounted on a support frame, such as the underneath side of a counter top, with the rod being movable axially from an idle position wherein it is disposed substantially entirely within, or beneath, the support frame to an extended position wherein it extends outwardly frm the support frame. When the rod is extended outwardly from the support frame, it serves as a supporting or stabilizing member for an individual positioned in front of the support frame. The rod may be associated with a second like rod spaced from the first rod so that when both rods are extended, an individual can take a position between the rods and be supported or stabilized thereby. The rod, or rods, are slidable in support brackets and a retaining device is provided for retaining each rod in axially adjusted positions in the supporting brackets.

  • Patent number: 4089545
Abstract: A passenger compartment and seating for vehicles, adapted to distribute and retard impact forces due to collision, and to embrace the passengers for both primary and subsequent impacts. A dash configuration is cooperatively related to a front seat configuration with the back of the front seat cooperatively related to the front of a rear seat. The dash and seats are cushioned, and the seats are moveable upon deceleration to embrace a passenger between the dash and the front seat and to embrace a passenger between the front seat and the rear seat. The forward movement of the seats relative to each other and of the front seat into spaced relation to the dash, is restricted. There is a retarded forward motion of the following rear seat into spaced relation to the front seat. The passengers are passively embraced between the forwardly shifted spaced seats or the front seat and dash.

  • Patent number: 4078636
Abstract: An energy absorbing apparatus that absorbs impact energy due to the collision of a vehicle by drawing a drawable member, in such a manner as to subject said drawable member to plastic deformation based on the relative movement between the vehicle's body and frame. The drawable member is supported rotatably by brackets between the vehicle's body and frame, and the large diameter portion of the drawable member is drawably passed through a die mounted on the brackets.

  • Patent number: 4065167
Abstract: A safety enclosure for use with underground mining machinery for protecting the operator of the machinery from overhead and lateral falls and the like. The safety enclosure comprises a cage-like structure of generally rectangular cross section for receiving and surrounding the operator while operating the machine. A pair of longitudinal male slide members are vertically secured to the cage-like structure along one side thereof, the slide members being slidably mateable with a pair of cooperating female channel members vertically secured along one side of the mining machine. Shear pins are provided for adjustably maintaining, under normal operating conditions, the cage-like male slide members assembly disposed above the mine floor by a preselected distance and for releasing the assembly for sliding displacement to the floor of the mine in response to an overhead fall causing a predetermined force on the top of the enclosure.

  • Patent number: 4005877
Abstract: A vehicular passenger restraint mechanism especially adapted for amusement rides wherein the passenger is subjected to changing forces throughout the ride. A passenger restraint arm is pivotably attached at the head location of each passenger seat. The restraint arm pivots from an extreme upward position, that permits the passenger to move into and out of the seat, to a lower restraint position wherein the bottom of the restraint arm rests on the passenger's lap and the remaining portions of the arm simultaneously restrain the passenger's shoulders against the back of the seat. A hydraulic system controllable from one or more locations on a multi-seat amusement ride vehicle permits each passenger to move his or her associated passenger restraint bar either up or down. A mechanical backup is provided with each hydraulic restraint system.

  • Patent number: 3981520
Abstract: A safety system for preventing injury to passengers of transport vehicles. In response to a collision each seat of the vehicle is automatically moved into a position wherein its occupant is protected within a structurally stable protective enclosure. Forming the enclosure are both movable portions secured to the seats and fixed portions secured to the vehicle. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the movable seat is provided with a guidance system that normally facilitates selective adjustment of the seat into positions comfortable for its occupant but additionally produces automatic movement of the seat into the protective enclosure in response to a collision.
