Patent number: 6827370Abstract: The ski pole has normal strength when the pole is normally gripped at its handle and reduced strength when not gripped. The poles permanently deform when a predetermined level of excessive bending force is applied. The pole shaft is hollow with a short circumferential segment having reduced cross-section. When the handle is gripped, a plug slideable within the shaft spans the reduced cross-section and reinforces the pole at that region. When the handle is not gripped, the plug slides away from the reduced wall segment and reduces pole strength. A button on the handle connects to the plug by a rod, cable, hydraulics, pneumatics, etc. Alternatively, button actuation electrically drives a magnetic solenoid to move the plug. The weakened portion is replaceable so the pole is reusable.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 2002Date of Patent: December 7, 2004Inventors: Nogah Haramati, Joseph Margulies

Patent number: 6070907Abstract: An athletic pole adapted for minimizing injuries to the hand and wrist of the user in the event of an accident. The pole includes a handle having an enlarged handle base, a shaft extending from the handle and including a proximal end adjacent the handle, a distal end, and an enlarged shaft base on the proximal end that normally engages the handle base. The pole also includes an attachment device for attaching the handle to the shaft and a biasing device exerting sufficient tension on the attachment device for biasing the attachment device to maintain the handle base and the shaft base in a mating, coaxial position during normal use. The periphery of the handle base and the periphery of the shaft base collectively form a fulcrum point for permitting controlled, tensioned articulation of the handle relative to the shaft. Such articulation results when a predetermined bending force is applied to the pole that is sufficient to overcome the tension of the biasing device on the attachment device.Type: GrantFiled: December 28, 1998Date of Patent: June 6, 2000Inventors: Edward J. Patent number: 5984359Abstract: The specification discloses a sports pole including at least two flexible rods, the first of which is held in compression and the second of which is held in tension by the spatial arrangement of the two rods relative to one another and relative to the handle. The tension rod is slidably connected to the handle at one end and fixedly connected to the compression rod at the other end. When the user plants the pole, the movement of the tension rod within the handle allows the compression rod to deflect further, thereby acting as an energy absorbing member. As the user advances through the pole stroke, the energy stored in the pole during planting and pushing is released as the compression rod returns to its original position. This yields a forward force applied to assist the user in forward motion.Type: GrantFiled: February 17, 1998Date of Patent: November 16, 1999Assignees: Carl V. Forslund, James A. Patent number: 5979015Abstract: An ergonomic hand grip is provided for use with a wide variety of devices and equipment such as ski poles and bicycle handlebars. In a basic illustrated form, the grip has an elongated base that is contoured so that, when gripped, the thumb is bent and the hand and wrist are in a neutral position. In the neutral position, the hand is not cocked or hyper-extended, but rather is generally aligned with the forearm. In particular, a thumb support is provided adjacent to one end of the base to position and support the thumb in the bent position. The base is also provided with suitable depressions and/or recessed areas to receive enlarged portions of the gripping hand to cause the knuckles to be in generally linear alignment. Further, the end of the base opposite the thumb support is reduced in size to allow disproportionately more contraction of the lowermost two fingers, and primarily the lowermost or little finger.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 1996Date of Patent: November 9, 1999Inventor: Stephen K.
