  • Patent number: 9114682
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a novel steering system specifically designed to operate in conjunction with the powered version of the extreme-travel independent suspension system that is disclosed in the U.S. patent application Ser. No. 14/087,552. Based on a steering mechanism commonly found in off-road racing trucks built around Ford's twin I-beam front suspension system, this novel steering system comprises a type of swingset steering linkage structure. Unique features of this novel steering system include a right-angle bellcrank and swingset arm whereby the vertical bellcrank arm functions like the swingset arm. This novel steering system utilizes front or rear driver and passenger tie rods operating in coincidence with their counterpart suspension links to control the directional orientation of the steering or non-steering knuckles with minimal bump steer or change in toe throughout suspension travel, respectively.

Abstract: A supporting and braking assembly for a motor vehicle wheel has a supporting member, defined by a single piece adapted to be coupled to a suspension of the motor vehicle and provided with a central portion coupled to a rotating hub by means of a bearing. The supporting member is also provided with two arms which extend in cantilevered manner from the central portion in essentially radial directions and support respective studs, to which a floating caliper is slidingly coupled. The caliper is arranged straddling a brake disc, fixed and coaxial with respect to the hub, and supports two brake pads arranged on opposite sides of the brake disc. At least one of the studs is sized so as to transfer the tangential loads caused by braking from the caliper directly onto the corresponding arm.

  • Patent number: 7182353
Abstract: A turn brake includes a cylinder assembly coupled to a conventional front-wheel steering system of a multi-track vehicle. The cylinder assembly generates fluid power for applying differential braking force to left and right wheels of the vehicle in response to turning of a steering wheel of the steering system, thereby compensating for a loss of steering traction. Pressure generated in the cylinder assembly can exert a reaction force on the steering wheel to provide tactile feedback to the driver, which may help to avoid oversteer. An optional shutoff mechanism may be provided for selectively disabling or disconnecting the turn brake.

  • Patent number: 6000490
Abstract: A vehicle steering input device includes a fixed housing, a steering input shaft rotatable relative to the housing by a vehicle operator, a hub non-rotatably mounted on the input shaft, a friction member frictionally engaging the hub, a resilient member biased to maintain the friction member in engagement with the hub member, a movable locking ring meshingly coupled to the friction member, and an electromagnet. When the electromagnet is energized it moves the locking ring into meshing engagement with the housing, thus limiting rotation of the friction member and creating an additional friction force which makes it more difficult to rotate the hub and the input shaft. The magnitude of this friction force depends on the bias of the resilient member and is not limited by the strength of the electromagnet.

  • Patent number: 4140201
Abstract: A braking system for the front wheels of a motor vehicle. A first reducing valve is interposed between the driver's master cylinder and the brake acting on the front wheel on one side and a second reducing valve is interposed between the master cylinder and the brake acting on the front wheel on the other side. The valves are arranged so that they do not restrict braking in a straight line but a resilient linkage connected to the vehicle suspension controls braking during cornering so that the pressure to the brake on the inboard wheel is reduced. The valves give improved braking to cornering characteristics compared with previously proposed systems.

Abstract: A liquid pressure braking system for a vehicle has a master cylinder which is connected to the brake operating motor cylinder on each front wheel of the vehicle through a respective liquid pressure intensifier. Each intensifier has a differential area piston. The differential liquid pressure on the piston, which tends to close the valve and render the intensifier effective to increase the liquid pressure at its outlet as compared with its liquid pressure inlet, is opposed by a spring which reacts against a stepped plunger. The plunger projects towards a link 18 of a mechanism which interconnects suspension components of the two front wheels.
