Patent number: 4234214Abstract: A document is provided having thereon a legible code to distinguish the document from other similar documents, the code comprising an arrangement of alphanumeric characters. Where the document is a banknote, the code may be the serial number which is unique to that banknote, and which is one of a series of such serial numbers carried on individual members of a set of such documents, and having sequential numerical values. To enhance the security value of the serial number portion of the document and to inhibit successful forgery thereof, the alphanumeric characters are provided in reverse, or negative form. The security value derives from the complexity and cost of the apparatus necessary to print a series of successive serial numbers in reverse, rather than positive form. The code may correspond to a code provided elsewhere on the document in positive form. Another reverse code on a different background may be provided elsewhere on the document.Type: GrantFiled: August 16, 1978Date of Patent: November 18, 1980Assignee: Governor & Company of the Bank of EnglandInventor: Peter D. Patent number: 4231593Abstract: A check has first and second coatings one of which is electrically conductive and the other electrically non-conductive. The coatings are of contrasting colors and one of the coatings is electrically vaporizable for exposing the underlying coating during a "write" operation. The coatings may overlay a base material to form a three layer structure or the base material itself may function as one of the coatings of appropriate color and conductivity. The check is composed of at least two segments, a negotiable segment which may be fed back to a terminal device for a machine "read" operation. The memory segment may be formed into one or more memory parts on the negotiable segment, the stub portion and on the memory segment. One or more of these memory parts may be easily detached. The check described above combines uniquely with an input-output device which can read from it and write on it.Type: GrantFiled: February 21, 1978Date of Patent: November 4, 1980Assignee: Centurion Data CorporationInventors: Vincent G.
