Patent number: 4536018Abstract: An expansion joint for connecting pipe ends includes a fluorocarbon polymer tube having a reinforcing fabric embedded within it. The ends of the tube have radially extending flanges which are adapted to be in sealing relationship with the pipe ends. The tube has an annular arch spaced between the tube flanges. Metal stub ends having a radially extending flange at one end are in abutting relation to the tube flanges, thereby providing support and improved sealing from the otherwise flexible tube flange. A rubber backing is fastened to the fabric embedded in the tube. A back-up ring having peripheral fastener apertures is disposed about the tube at each end of the tube. The tube flanges are compressed between the back-up ring and pipe flange when the latter two are bolted together. A washer, spaced between the backup ring and rubber back permits the ring to be rotated about the tube to allow alignment of peripheral ring fastener apertures with corresponding fastener apertures in the pipe flange.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 1982Date of Patent: August 20, 1985Assignee: Kennecott CorporationInventor: Adam J. Patent number: 4273365Abstract: An expansion joint and a fabric which may be used in connection therewith are disclosed. The expansion joint and fabric are particularly suitable for joining conduit sections through which high temperature, highly corrosive gases are conveyed, such as flue gases in a power plant. The fabric material includes a pair of foil-fabric composites in which a metallic foil is bonded to a high temperature resistant material, such as glass cloth. Between the two foil-fabric composites is a fluid impervious barrier preferably comprising an inner metallic foil of alloy material. The foil-fabric composites are stiffer than the high temperature resistant material alone, and this limits the motion and flexibility of the expansion joint to such an extent that the inner foil is not crumpled and damaged during use and handling. At the same time the stiffening is not so great that the ability of the expansion joint to accommodate relative movement between conduit sections is substantially affected.Type: GrantFiled: May 18, 1979Date of Patent: June 16, 1981Inventor: Donald K. The joint includes a pair of opposed frame sections for connection to the adjacent ends of the conduits being coupled. A connector of flexible fluid impervious fabric bridges and seals the space between the frame sections to provide a flexible and fluid-tight joint having both high heat resistance and high corrosion resistance. The ends of the fabric connector have portions, at corners of the connector, in which the fabric is folded back on itself to contribute to forming bloused corners. Patent number: 4175754Abstract: An effective seal is provided which fulfills the requirement for a trouble free joint, particularly "V" band joints which are dependent on accurately controlled tube end flanges. Rolled sheet metal flanges are particularly subject to excessive leakages due to deformation during handling and installation. The normal tendency to stop leakage on any joint is by additional torque of the coupling. With the rolled sheet metal flanges, this causes additional deflection of the flange and aggravates the leakage problem rather than reducing it. Furthermore on aircraft environment systems leaks are extremely difficult to pinpoint and time consuming to repair.Type: GrantFiled: May 8, 1978Date of Patent: November 27, 1979Assignee: Lockheed CorporationInventor: William E.
