  • Patent number: 8662540
Abstract: Systems for coupling tubes, pipes, conduits, ducts, and the like. In at least some embodiments, a coupling assembly includes a sleeve, a retaining member having an angled end surface, and a locking member. A tube is positioned through the locking member, the retaining member, and into the sleeve. In a first position, a first portion of the locking member contacts an angled end surface of the retaining member, and a second portion of the locking member is spaced apart from the angled end surface. The locking member is then tilted into a second position wherein the second portion is relatively closer to the angled end surface to securely engage the locking member with the tube, and the locking member is then secured in the tilted (or second) position relative to the sleeve, thereby securing the tube within the sleeve.

  • Patent number: 5100183
Abstract: A pipe coupling for the joining of plain end pipe that includes an annular gasket and a compressible lock ring at each end of the coupling between a tubular middle ring and an annular follower. Bolts extending between the opposite followers are effective when tightened to compress both the gasket and lock ring into their operative relation for sealing and gripping a coupled pipe end, respectively. The follower is comprised of a unitary structure integrally cast to define an internal annular protuberance that juxtaposedly confronts the radially rearward surface of the gasket. Also defined by the follower inward of the protuberance is a central opening at least partially tapered frusto-conically and in which the lock ring is initially supported controllably spaced from the gasket. Tightening of the bolts enables gasket sealing pressure to be achieved about the pipe end sequentially before a completed restraing grip on the pipe end is attained by the lock ring.

  • Patent number: 4606565
Abstract: A pipe coupling is provided having a sleeve with frusto-conical ends, elastomeric gaskets fitting in said frusto-conical ends, a follower at each end of the sleeve, tightening bolts acting on the followers to move them axially together to compress the elastomeric gaskets radially into sealing engagement with the pipe ends, a back up ring having a frusto-conical opening spaced from each follower opposite the sleeve, frusto-conical opening in each said back up ring having its largest opening toward said sleeve, a frusto-conical split jaw in each back up ring and auxiliary tightening means for moving the back up rings towards the adjacent followers to compress said jaws into the pipe ends.

  • Patent number: 4569542
Abstract: A pipe coupling for the joining of plain end pipe that includes an annular gasket and a compressible lock ring at each end of the coupling between a tubular middle ring and an annular follower. Bolts extending between the opposite followers are effective when tightened to compress both the gasket and lock ring into their operative relation for sealing and gripping a coupled pipe end, respectively. An annular recess contained in the backface of the gasket affords a clearance of controlled dimension initially about the juxtaposed portion of the lock ring. The clearance functions when the bolts are tightened to enable gasket sealing pressure to be achieved about the pipe sequentially before an effective grip on the pipe is attained by the lock ring.

  • Patent number: 4240655
Abstract: A flange compression pipe coupling wherein the end portions of the pipes to be coupled are surrounded by an inner jacket consisting of ductile metallic material. The inner jacket is surrounded by a radially deformable outer jacket which is biased against the exterior of the outer jacket by two flanged rings having conical internal surfaces. The outer jacket causes plastic deformation of the inner jacket until the latter sealingly engages the end portions of the pipes whereupon the extent of plastic deformation of the inner jacket remains unchanged.

  • Patent number: 3992568
Abstract: A pipe coupling affording electrical continuity between all coupling components despite dielectric pre-coating of the individual components. For rendering the coupling components electrically conductive as where required for cathodic protection in a buried underground installation, conductive elements extending through and about the gasket effect electrical continuity between the follower, middle ring and contained pipe. At the same time, selectively located protuberances on each bolt are bared and reliably penetrate the coating on one follower while the bolt nut on makeup penetrates the bolt thread coating and the opposite follower to respectively insure their conductive continuity in the assembly.
