Patent number: 7591059Abstract: Methods and apparatus for making a connection that can be rotationally locked by expansion are disclosed. Threaded tubular ends include a slot cut across a thread at a location along the circumference of the thread. Threading two tubular members that have the slot disposed in either or both of a pin or box end of the tubular members establishes the connection. The slots represent no impediment to the make-up or break-out of a box by pin connection prior to expansion. During expansion of the connection, the threads of either the box or pin end are forced via plastic flow into the slot in the corresponding thread. This results in locking the connection and preventing relative rotation between the two tubular members, which could otherwise loosen the connection.Type: GrantFiled: September 13, 2005Date of Patent: September 22, 2009Assignee: Weatherford/Lamb, Inc.Inventors: Iain C. Patent number: 7452007Abstract: An expandable threaded connection between segments of expandable tubulars. The present invention utilizes two complementary thread segments. The first segment of the threaded connection utilizes standard box and pin threads. In the second segment of the threaded connection, material is removed from the stab flank of the pin threads to reduce the standard width of the pin threads, while the box threads of the second segment are standard thread width. The use of the reduced thread width in the pin threads of the second segment allows for a loose fit between the pin threads of the second segment and the box threads of the second segment. The loose fit between the pin and box threads of the second segment allows radial and axial movement between those threads without causing disengagement of the threaded connection during the expansion process.Type: GrantFiled: July 7, 2004Date of Patent: November 18, 2008Assignee: Weatherford/Lamb, Inc.Inventors: Ghazi J. Hashem, Lev M. Ring, John R. Setterberg, Jr.

Patent number: 6764110Abstract: This invention is a method and apparatus for making a pressure-containing threaded tubular connection, suitable for remotely operated connection and separation, utilizing electrical heating to reduce the amount of makeup torque required to produce reliable preloading of the connection. One aspect of the present invention comprises: 1) a first hub with male threads on its exterior and having a sealing face and axial flow passage, b) a second hub having an axial flow passage and carrying an annular seal which can be mated with the sealing face of the first hub and mounting a rotatable nut having female threads on its interior and integral nut heating means. After stabbing and initial make-up of the connection, the nut is heated and thereby expanded in a controlled manner and the connection retightened. Following cooling, the structural connection is fully preloaded and the annular seal fully compressed so that it seals. Reversing the procedure permits disconnection.Type: GrantFiled: April 26, 2002Date of Patent: July 20, 2004Inventor: Larry R. Russell

Patent number: 6719331Abstract: A telescopic tube with water supply is equipped with a minor tube, a major tube that are connected to each other by a tubular coupling device which has a registration end and a connecting section, the former is engaged with one end of the minor tube and the latter is engaged with the top end of the major tube. A guard cap is secured to the top end of the major tube which serves to prevent the minor tube from easy disengagement from the major tube in case of excessive extension adjustment. The connecting section of the tubular coupling device has a cone shaped configuration with a spiral thread track defined thereon and terminates in a stop board.Type: GrantFiled: January 30, 2003Date of Patent: April 13, 2004Inventor: Ming Jen Chen

Patent number: 6543816Abstract: A threaded pipe connector which may find application in the petroleum and gas industry, and pipe connections formed with the connector. The connector includes a male element disposed at the end of a first pipe and a female element disposed at the end of a second pipe. The male element is provided with an external tapered male threading and the female element is provided with an internal tapered female threading corresponding to the male threading. A central seal, formed by a male bearing surface and a female bearing surface and bearing against each other and disposed in a central zone of the male and female threading respectively where the threadings have been interrupted, seals the connector when the connector is assembled. The connector and the connected pipes formed from this connector provide a tight seal under high external pressures.Type: GrantFiled: June 20, 2001Date of Patent: April 8, 2003Assignee: Vallourec Mannesmann Oil & Gas FranceInventor: Thierry Noel

Publication number: 20020079704Abstract: A spout for a flexible bag adapted to hold a liquid, the spout adapted for coupling with a connector having a rotatable spout adapter with an internal thread. The spout has a substantially cylindrical body with an outer surface, a spout opening, and a spout axis. The spout further has at least one flexible tab attached to and protruding radially distal from the outer surface of the cylindrical body of the spout. The tab has a top side that is substantially perpendicular to the spout axis, a bottom side opposing the top side, and a leading edge for engaging the thread. Additionally, the spout, has an undeformed tab length that typically deforms upon engaging the internal thread of the spout adapter.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 26, 2002Publication date: June 27, 2002Inventors: Christopher C. Patent number: 6283511Abstract: A pipe coupling has coupling members provided with a pin and a box. The outer surface of the pin is provided with axially extending columns of teeth, separated by free slots, and the inner surface of the box is provided with axially extending columns of counter teeth, also separated by free slots. To connect the coupling, the pin is axially inserted into the box and rotated over a fraction of a full turn to make the engagement surfaces of the teeth engage with the corresponding engagement surfaces of the counter teeth, thereby creating an axial pre-tension between the pin and the box. The design of the teeth is differentiated over the length of the pin and the box to be adapted to differences in loads during make-up and in use and the coupling is protected against release and overturning.Type: GrantFiled: August 24, 1998Date of Patent: September 4, 2001Assignee: Well Engineering Partners, B.V.Inventor: Gerrit Pieter Kamp

Patent number: 6168213Abstract: A connector having a stinger and a receiver. The receiver is cocked by applying counter-acting torques to separate sections of the receiver. The counteracting torques compress a spring member. In the cocked position, the stinger is inserted into the receiver. When the counter-acting torques are released, the spring decompresses and locks the stinger in the receiver.Type: GrantFiled: June 27, 1997Date of Patent: January 2, 2001Assignee: Schlumberger Technology CorporationInventor: Laurent E. Patent number: 6102442Abstract: The present invention describes an improved connector for attaching flexible metallic and non-metallic conduit to electrical panel or junction boxes. The improved connector comprises a two pieces. The first piece comprises a metallic cylindrical inner body section, having an integral collar extending from the metallic cylindrical inner body section. The outer circumference of the inner body section has threads at one end thereof for grabbing the interior surface of the flexible conduit and pulling it toward the collar, while the other end of the metallic cylindrical inner body is equipped with external threads for engagement with an electrical panel or junction box. The second piece comprises a non-metallic resilient seat member or ferrule friction fit onto the conduit engaging end of the metallic cylindrical inner body that is engaged by the conduit end as the conduit is threaded onto the cylindrical inner body.Type: GrantFiled: June 10, 1999Date of Patent: August 15, 2000Assignee: Arlington Industries, Inc.Inventor: Thomas J.
