Patent number: 12257657Abstract: A tool head assembly for crimping, the assembly including an internal cam that spins freely on a stationary shaft in one direction and locks onto the shaft in the other direction. That cam rotates against the moving slide forcing to move away from the stationary shaft opening a gap between rollers. A controller is programmed to have the drive rotate in one direction for a set time period, then reverse the rotation to begin the crimp process. The start rotation of the drive rotates the cam and opens the roller gap. The forward rotation allows the cam to swing, closing the gap and rotating the rollers around a seal. The tool eliminates the air cylinder and related pneumatic hoses and valve making the head smaller and allows a controller to communicate with any OEM production system to verify the tool has been used and was used correctly.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 2023Date of Patent: March 25, 2025Assignee: Magna Exteriors Inc.Inventors: Fred H. Patent number: 7997113Abstract: A hemming system and method is taught. The system and method employs tool platen assemblies comprising an anvil and one or more beam assemblies which are configured on the tool platen assembly and which tool platen assembly can be removed and replaced in the hemming system without the need for reconfiguration of the tool platen components. This allows for relatively rapid change over for the hemming system to hem different components. Further, the lift table of the hemming system includes a lift plate which moves the anvil through a predefined constant vertical stroke, but the start and end positions of that constant stroke length can be changed by inserting and removing a set of spacers from the anvil lift path. When the spacers are in the lift path, the lowered position and the raised position of the anvil are both higher than the corresponding lowered position and raised position when the spacers are removed from the lift path.Type: GrantFiled: June 11, 2008Date of Patent: August 16, 2011Assignee: Magna International Inc.Inventors: Thomas Dermody, Michael W. Patent number: 7963140Abstract: A variable crimp on flange (COF) tool is provided for engaging and attaching a weather strip and like structures onto a flange. The COF tool includes a housing with two or more crimp rollers that project therefrom. For example, a fixed roller is mounted to the housing to rotate in a first direction, while a movable roller is mounted to the housing to rotate in a second, opposite direction. The movable roller is axially offset from and movable relative to the fixed roller. A driving mechanism, such as a pneumatic motor, is encased within the housing, and operates to rotate the crimp rollers. A biasing mechanism, such as a pneumatic piston assembly, is also encased within the housing, and operates to move the movable crimp roller relative to the fixed crimp roller. The COF tool is engineered such that the crimp speed, crimp rate, and crimp pressure are independently adjustable.Type: GrantFiled: May 28, 2009Date of Patent: June 21, 2011Assignee: GM Global Technology Operations LLCInventors: David M. Patent number: 7955463Abstract: A method for connecting shell parts (01, 02), which have been formed from sheet metal, for example by deep drawing. The shell parts (01, 02) may be any desired workpieces of a chassis part in the form of semifinished items or other components that are suitable for a folded seam connection. For this, the shell parts must have edges which are arranged lying one against the other in the connecting position. The method according includes first arranging the shell parts (1, 2) that are to be connected in a position envisaged for the shell parts (01, 02) in the connected state. Subsequently, the edge (03) of the first shell part (01) is folded around the edge (04) of the second shell part (02), so that a folded seam (06) is formed. After the folding operation, according to the invention the folded seam (06) is heated and subsequently once again pressed together. As a result, a positive and gap-free folded seam connection is achieved, with which the shell parts (01, 02) are permanently firmly connected.Type: GrantFiled: July 28, 2007Date of Patent: June 7, 2011Assignee: Schaeffler Technologies GmbH & Co.
