    Abstract: An assembly tool for installing a clutch pressure plate and clutch housing of a manual clutch on the flywheel of an engine includes a bell shaped housing which receives and pivotally supports a plurality of fingers having outwardly directed claws. A coaxial cylindrical portion of the bell shaped housing includes male threads which receive a complementarily threaded collar which may be rotated to engage, radially extend and retract the fingers. Internal threads in the cylindrical portion of the housing receive a complementarily threaded portion of a push rod. The push rod includes a thrust bearing at an end that engages the fingers of the pressure plate and may be rotated to engage, retract and extend the pressure plate. A method of clutch housing installation utilizing the tool is also disclosed.

A mounting bracket is bolted to the flywheel housing to hold the tool in place and provide support for lifting. Mounting brackets in different sizes may be used for flywheel housings of different sizes. A clutch assembly may then be placed over a removable splined clutch shaft in the correct size for that clutch assembly. An input shaft may be slid manually back and forth through a position rail to provide horizontal motion for moving the clutch assembly toward or away from the flywheel housing. A slack adjuster provides precise rotational movement about the axis of the input shaft for raising or lowering the clutch assembly to the correct height. A lift extender provides additional motion for moving the clutch assembly into or out of position.

    Abstract: An apparatus is provided for use in a method of making a torque converter clutch. The torque converter clutch is comprised of an annular clutch plate to which is secured or bonded an annular friction surface. The annular friction surface is formed on the machine by die-stamping, from a flat sheet of friction material, successive arcuate segments. Each arcuate segment is stamped into a holding ring which is indexed to accept the next successive segment until a full annulus is provided. The holding ring is transported to a stripper station. Simultaneous with the stamping, the annular clutch plate is heated and transported to the stripper station. When both components are in the stripper station, the friction annulus is stripped from the holding ring onto the heated clutch plate. The clutch plate and attached friction annulus are discharged from the machine. Simultaneous with the stamping, the offal of the sheet of friction material is cut transversely and longitudinally for discharge into an egress channel.

    Abstract: A clutch structure has a housing in which is slidably disposed a fluid-operated piston, a plurality of inner and outer splined friction plates and a return spring assembly. The friction plates have formed thereon a spline portion such that alternating discs have the splines extending radially outward, engaging the housing, or extending radially inward, away from the housing. The clutch structure is assembled by positioning the clutch housing in a fixture composed of a ring which is sized to accommodate the outer spline of the one set of friction plates. The plates are arranged in two vertical stacks with the inner splined plates in one stack and the outer splined plates in the other. The plates are alternately installed in the housing by descending from the stacks solely by the force of gravity until a desired number of plates have been installed. The piston and a pressure plate can be installed in the housing prior to mounting the housing to the fixture, if desired.

The annular plates are placed about said alignment tool, with the teeth of said annular plates meshing with said alignment tool. Then, an axially compressive force is applied to said stack of plates to maintain axial alignment of the teeth of adjacent plates. This axial compressive force is supplied by a high pressure fluid which is communicated to a piston engaging said stack of plates. Then, the alignment tool is removed while said axial compressive force is retained on said stack of plates.
