  • Patent number: 6694590
Abstract: A method for ensuring the proper setup position of an automotive-type automatic transmission gear selector (shifter). The present invention utilizes a setting tool having an arcuate configuration. The setting tool may be inserted through a gear selector lever of a gear selector assembly, and rotated to provide for a slight biasing of the gear selector lever in a predetermined direction. The method is especially applicable to the setup of a gear selector, wherein the connector coupling the gear selector lever to the transmission is attached using a threaded fastener. The bias imparted by the setting tool counteracts the movement of the gear selector lever produced by the torque applied during tightening of the fastener.

Abstract: The system includes stationary assembly jigs for supporting mechanical structures during assembly thereof, and a plurality of mobile, modular workstations that travel from one assembly jig to another. Each workstation interfaces with the assembly jigs and is configured to facilitate a unique set of work operations on the mechanical structures. The workstations can include worker platforms, parts storage modules, drill and fasten modules, tooless component indexing modules, self-contained cleaning modules, functional testing modules, and others. Docking members on the workstations and the assembly jigs enable the workstations to dock with the jigs for indexing the workstations to the jigs. The assembly jigs can include utility ports and the workstations can include couplers that engage the ports so that electrical, pneumatic, water, vacuum, and/or data communication can be established between the workstations and the jigs.

  • Patent number: 6507992
Abstract: A method for merging the disc pack, E-block and magnet of a disc drive, the disc pack conveyed to a first selected position in a merge assembly station and moved to a merge slide assembly where calibration measurements of disc pack height and squareness are made at a reference position. The merge slide assembly moves the disc pack from the reference position to a shuttled position, the E-block is moved to an E-block nest assembly where the load arms of the E-block are spread in response to the calibration measurements, and the discs of the disc pack are interweaved between opposing read/write heads of the E-block. A magnet slide assembly positions the magnet to straddle the E-block. The disc pack, E-block and magnet are moved together, maintaining the merged interrelationship, to the basedeck and fastened to the basedeck.

  • Patent number: 6491209
Abstract: A band saw strip manipulator is arranged to receive a toothed metal strip for welding from a cut to length machine. The strip is moved into the band saw strip manipulator by powered rollers. The strip extends between a first edge detector at one side of the manipulator and a second edge detector at the opposite side of the manipulator. First and second end clamps are located to either side of a carriage mounted for vertical movement. When the strip has been approximately centrally located in the manipulator the carriage moves upwardly thereby pulling the strip upwardly until the edge detectors detect the ends of the strip. The first and second end clamps are then closed and pivoted about first and second guide rollers so that the two ends of the strip are located in close proximity for welding together.
