Casting And Working Patents (Class 29/33C)
  • Patent number: 4976024
Abstract: A continuous casting machine is directly coupled to a rolling facility has many machines in a series including the rolling machine disposed downstream of the continuous casting machine. When one of the machines is stopped, the slab is still continuously produced by the continuous casting machine, but is sheared on the upstream side of the rolling machine and coiled in its hot state rather than rolled. Even though the rolling operation is interrupted, all of the slab being produced by the continuous casting machine is coiled so that the molten metal produced for the casting is not wasted. After the machine that has shut the line down is able to be restarted, the slab that has been stored in its hot state is uncoiled and supplied to the downstream machines.

  • Patent number: 4942656
Abstract: The plant (10) includes a temperature-equalization furnace (16) and an inlet shears (12) and an outlet shears (17) positioned respectively at the inlet and outlet of the furnace. The furnace is equipped with inlet and outlet doors, and cooled rollers connected to a motor for driving them in an oscillatory motion. In a method of continuous strip rolling using such a plant, in the event of an obstacle in a rolling train (18), the part of slab (20) not yet rolled is sheared by the outlet shears, returned to the furnace and kept there until the obstacle has been removed. During retention in the furnace, the slab is kept in a to-and-fro movement by means of oscillatory rotation of the cooled rollers.

  • Patent number: 4898228
Abstract: Continuously cast steel billet is sectioned to length while the core of the casting is molten by being pinched-off to seal the ends of the casting sections and contain molten core metal, effecting thereby energy conservation and economic savings in the production of steel products. The inventive method and means avoids tensilely stressing the casting lessening the risk that the skin of the casting will be caused to rupture from being stretched and that molten metal from the core of the casting will spill to ruin the casting and endanger personnel and equipment.

  • Patent number: 4717296
Abstract: A method of rough finishing a piston, including removing gates and sprues, while the piston is rotated at a relatively slow speed. A rotating milling cutter provided with a multiplicity of cutting elements is positioned relative to the rotating piston such that the cutting elements successively engage and remove stock (chips) from the surface of the rotating piston. The milling cutter is rotated sufficiently rapidly to produce enough surface speed to generate the heat necessary to render the chips molten. An apparatus for carrying out the method is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4569386
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a cylindrical billet having a predetermined length useable as raw material for producing a pipe. This method is practiced by way of the steps of drawing a cast slab from a casting mold on a continuous casting stand, spirally winding or cylindrically bending it around a rotating mandrel, joining together both end faces of the wound or bent cast slab to a cylindrical body and cutting it to a predetermined length. Two or more cast slabs may be used for forming the cylindrical body. Two rectangular cast slabs may be used as starting material which are subjected to roll forming and thereafter are cut to the predetermined length. They are then press worked to form a recess having a semi-circular cross-sectional configuration whereby a cylindrical body is constituted by assembly thereof in a superimposed relation.

  • Patent number: 4280301
Abstract: A material handling system is provided having particular application in grey iron foundries. In general, the system provides a continuous flow of work from the time castings are removed from their molds until the castings are ready for shipping. In particular, the system includes an environmentally acceptable grinding room work station in the form of a totally enclosed work area. Means for feeding material into and from the work station include a first plurality of gravity feed input chutes operatively coupled to a conveyor system on the input side of the work station, and a second plurality of gravity feed output chutes leading to another area on the output side of the work station. The conveyor system is designed to carry the castings from shake-out to the enclosed work area. Scrap is separated from the molded parts prior to their entrance into the work area and rejected parts continue along past the gravity feed input chutes to an accumulation storage device.

  • Patent number: 4163312
Abstract: Metal melted and poured into molds, mounted on a conveyor, at a first station. Metal cools to rolling temperature during conveyance to second station where hydraulic ram ejects ingots from molds. Ingots are immediately fed to rolling mill. Molds have interior refractory linings. Embedded in linings are electrical resistance heating elements that heat exterior side surfaces of ingots, between first and second stations, to prevent those surfaces from reducing below rolling temperatures while interior temperatures of ingots reduce to levels suitable for rolling.

  • Patent number: 4005511
Abstract: The specification discloses a method and related apparatus for casting aluminum extrusion die blanks, both cored and uncored, of molten steel. A disc-like carbon or other suitable material mold having spaced side walls joined by a peripheral edge wall is filled through a sprue oriented tangentially on the peripheral edge wall of the mold. The center areas of the mold side walls are made thinner than the peripheral portions of the side wall and thinner than the peripheral edge wall such that the center of the mold cools more quickly from both sides thereof than the circumferential periphery of the mold. A core void can be made in the die blank by providing a non-permanent core shaped to basically the desired cross-section and adhered to an insert which fits into a receiving cavity in the inside of the mold.

  • Patent number: 3941184
Abstract: Seamless tubular products made of metal, particularly steel, by the apparatus and method are manufactured by casting molten metal into a round, downwardly converging mold cavity having a coaxial removable cooled core of substantially uniform diameter throughout and which is less than the cavity's minimum diameter, the metal solidifying initially where it contacts the cavity wall and the core with solidification proceeding upwardly with incidental possible formation of pipe in the upper portion of the casting. Prior to the resulting casting cooling below a forging temperature, the core is removed and replaced by a mandrel having a flaring portion and which is pressed into the casting under pressure forging the casting radially outwardly and upwardly against the mold cavity wall with consequent closing and welding of any pipe.
