  • Patent number: 5885199
Abstract: A multifunction, compact machining center has a work spindle which can rotate at high speed, or controlled by a C axis servo driver, and a frame-shaped tool magazine, which is composed of a standing part and a rotatable part. Arranged on the standing part are enough internal and external turning tools to complete all turning processes on one workpiece. Driven tools are held on the rotatable part to do drilling, boring, milling, gear hobbing, grinding, lapping etc. on the same workpiece at arbitrary angles. Additionally, work units for quenching, laser machining, gear shaping, bevel gear cutting, measuring, loading and unloading can also be employed on the tool magazine. By means of movements of the tool magazine relative to the work spindle in the plane perpendicular to the Z axis, each cutting tool or working unit can be put into the working area of the workpiece sequentially so as to complete all machining, measuring, loading and unloading.

  • Patent number: 5855152
Abstract: A compressed air valve circuit actuated assembly for operating a rotary tool turret of a lathe is disclosed which includes an actuator movably disposed in a housing and fixedly connected through an opening to the turret. The actuator moves linearly between a recessed position, wherein a first actuator attached ring of spaced apart teeth is closely intermeshed with a second housing attached ring of identical teeth, and an advanced position wherein the rings are decoupled to permit turret and actuator rotation. A series of compressed coil springs confined between the actuator and housing biases the actuator toward the recessed position. Compressed air supplied from the circuit to a housing chamber moves the actuator to the advanced position in opposition to the springs. A cross-piston, disposed in a bore formed in a housing surface portion and movable between start and ending positions, is coupled by an indexing pin to a slot in the actuator only when the actuator is in the advanced position.

  • Patent number: 4691419
Abstract: A turret is rotatably secured to a housing adapted to be secured to a robot wrist having a reference orientation and axis. The turret has a plurality of interchangeable lead processing devices which are selectively aligned to the reference orientation and axis. When so aligned a lead processing device is engaged with a selected component and operated to cut and bend the lead of that component. A second component's lead may be processed by the same or a different lead processing device secured to the turret. The latter device is aligned to the reference orientation and axis prior to processing the second component's lead. The robot is programmed to align the reference axis and the corresponding processing device to the selected component whose lead is to be processed.

Abstract: In machine tools, for selective utilization of fixed tools, or tools which are adapted to be driven and rotated, a common tool retainer is provided in the toolhead. The toolhead comprises a spur gear or similar driver, or comprises drive components for operatively engaging a rotating tool. The toolhead is adapted to be rotated about an axis which is disposed at an angle of 45.degree. with respect to the main axis and the transverse axis of the machine tool and which intersects the line of intersection of the tool carrier planes which extend parallel to the longitudinal and transverse planes. A journal arrangement for the driven tools is installed in the tool retainer itself, or in the toolhead.

  • Patent number: 4545233
Abstract: An apparatus for punching a workpiece has a stationary frame, a longitudinally extending row of horizontally spaced and upwardly facing different dies fixed on the frame below a horizontally elongated punching station, at least one horizontal and stationary rail fixed on the frame, and a punch carriage displaceable horizontally along the rail above the station. A turret rotates about a horizontal turret axis on the carriage and carries a plurality of radially outwardly directed different punches angularly spaced about the turret axis. A positioning unit is operatively connected between the carriage and the frame for displacing the carriage through a plurality of positions in each of which the turret axis is above one of the dies. An indexing unit angularly displaces the turret about its axis through positions in each of which one of the punches is facing down in the station toward the respective die.

  • Patent number: 4429443
Abstract: The specification is directed to a method of operating a machine tool which enables a machining center, a transfer line or a flexible manufacturing system to be rapidly converted from the manufacture of one work piece to the manufacture of another workpiece. This is achieved by mounting all the tools associated with one series of machining steps on a common carrier unit and adapting the carrier unit so that it can be placed quickly in position on the machine tool and automatically centered in a variety of positions so that each of the individual tools can be brought into a desired machining relationship with the workpiece. The tools can comprise both stationary and driven tools and the machine tool is adapted to allow relative movement between the workpiece and the individual tools so as to carry out the desired machining steps.

  • Patent number: 4286483
Abstract: The invention comprises a tool turret for a turning machine whose operational axis has a wider spacing from the bed of the carriage than the spindle axis of the turning machine. The tool turret has an inner rim with inner turning tools and an outer rim with outer turning tools, the inner and outer turning tools being angularly offset in relation to each other. In order to bring the inner and outer turning tools into operating position during the stepwise further movement of the turret, successive operational angles must be variable. Because of the wider spacing of the operational axis from the bed of the carriage, the turret disc carrying the tools can be made larger with the result that more tools can be provided thereon or the spacing between the tools can be enlarged. The changeover with unequal angles can be accomplished by means of a regulated direct current motor, the operational angle being fed into the regulation circuit as the desired value.
