Patent number: 7908727Abstract: A rivet is inserted into a workpiece by an apparatus that includes an internal roller screw linear actuator in which rotational movement of an internally threaded cylinder is converted into linear movement of a fastener insertion actuator assembly. The cylinder is driven in rotation by a servo-controlled motor. The angular velocity of the cylinder required to deliver the required energy to effect fastener insertion is calculated and the motor is first controlled to accelerate the cylinder up to the calculated angular velocity, the actuator assembly simultaneously being moved by the cylinder towards the workpiece. The motor is then controlled to maintain the angular velocity of the cylinder at not less than the calculated magnitude at least until insertion of the fastener. The cylinder stores kinetic energy by virtue of its inertia. Using this inertia to insert fasteners eliminates the need for position or force feedback control. The process allows for a rapid cycle time and the apparatus is compact.Type: GrantFiled: July 14, 2009Date of Patent: March 22, 2011Assignee: Henrob LimitedInventor: Nicholas Richard Clew

Patent number: 7856704Abstract: A monitoring device monitors an apparatus that clinches together sheet metal panels. In particular, a die assembly positioned on one side of the panels has a button forming die cavity defined by an anvil at the bottom of the die cavity and a plurality of radially moveably die blades at the side of the cavity. A plunger is positioned on the other side of the panels and registers with the die assembly so that linear displacement of the plunger plastically deforms the panels axially into the die assembly to engage with the anvil and then further linear displacement of the plunger will then deform the panels radially outward as permitted by the outward radial movement of the moveable die blades. Transducers measure the linear displacement of the plunger, the radial outward displacement of the radially moveable die blades, and the magnitude of the axial force applied against the anvil.Type: GrantFiled: October 14, 2005Date of Patent: December 28, 2010Assignee: GM Global Technology Operations, Inc.Inventors: Pei-Chung Wang, James W. The blind rivet installation tool includes a housing having an anvil seated on the rivet head. A collet is reciprocable within the tool housing and carries jaws for gripping the mandrel of the blind rivet. Retraction of the jaws by the collet displaces the jaws and the mandrel axially and causes the mandrel head to axially collapse and radially expand the hollow shank of the blind rivet into engagement with the bottom member so that the rivet attaches the top member and the bottom member. A cut off tool is actuated by an actuator to cut off the mandrel flush with the rivet head. Transducers and a process controller monitor the installation process and actuate the cut off blade upon determining that the blind rivet is properly installed.Type: GrantFiled: May 25, 2006Date of Patent: November 16, 2010Assignee: GM Global Technology Operations, Inc.Inventors: Robin Stevenson, Roland J. Patent number: 7406766Abstract: An apparatus (10) of the present invention is designed for assembling a load floor (12) having a peripheral slot (22) and an overlaying layer (24, 28). The apparatus (10) tucks the overhang of the overlaying layer (24, 28) into the peripheral slot (22). At least one holding device (52) holds the load floor (12). At least one tucking tool (54) tucks the overhang of the overlaying layer (24, 28) into the peripheral slot (22) to fold the overhang over the peripheral slot (22) and thereafter tucking the overhang into the peripheral slot (22). The invention includes a method of sequentially folding and thereafter tucking the overhang of the overlaying layers (24, 28) into the peripheral slot (22).Type: GrantFiled: October 19, 2004Date of Patent: August 5, 2008Assignee: BBI Enterprises, L.P.Inventors: Michael Levesque, Steven G Brown, Guy W Boitos, Karem Akawi

Patent number: 7325602Abstract: A mono-diameter wellbore casing. The mono-diameter wellbore casing is formed by plastically deforming and radially expanding a first tubular member within a wellbore. A second tubular member is then plastically deformed and radially expanded in overlapping relation to the first tubular member. The second tubular member and the overlapping portion of the first tubular member are then radially expanded again.Type: GrantFiled: September 28, 2006Date of Patent: February 5, 2008Assignee: Shell Oil CompanyInventors: Robert Lance Cook, Lev Ring, Edwin A. Patent number: 7305755Abstract: A hydraulic processing tong for processing workpieces, with a tool, has a first tool part with an axially movable press ram or plunger, which with a first end or a tool located there and an opposing workpiece assembly forms a work area or work gap and with the first end can move toward and away from the workpiece assembly, and with a hydraulic actuating device for applying a force to the press ram, causing it to move in the direction of the workpiece assembly.Type: GrantFiled: February 12, 2004Date of Patent: December 11, 2007Inventor: Heiko Schmidt

Patent number: 7293339Abstract: A low swage load fastening system is provided for installing swage-type fasteners to secure a plurality of workpieces together. The fastener includes a pin member having an elongated pin shank to be located in aligned openings in the workpieces. An enlarged head at one end of the pin engages one side of the workpieces. A grooved pin portion extends past an opposite side of the workpieces. A collar includes a shank portion adapted to be swaged into the pin lock grooves in response to a relative axial swage load applied by an installation tool. As one aspect of the system, the collar is as-headed and does not require thermal processing yet provides an optimum balance of reduced collar shank wall thickness and increased hardness, whereby the swage load is minimized. A low swage load thread form for the lock grooves of the pin is also provided, a reduced diameter, relatively short pull portion pin extension, installation tool improvements, and an associated method of use are also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 2005Date of Patent: November 13, 2007Assignee: Huck International, Inc.Inventors: Larry D. Patent number: 7185411Abstract: An apparatus for forming armed sutures has a swaging station for receiving, holding and swaging needles that are deposited therein. A linear motor drives a suture insertion gripper, which pulls suture from a supply reel and inserts a cut end thereof into a needle held in the swaging station. A ganged needle transfer assembly with a plurality of spaced needle gripper units carries needles along a line substantially at right angles to the suture line and transfers them to and from the swaging station and other needle processing stations. A precisor orients needles prior to placement in the swaging station and a pull test assembly tests armed sutures in both destructive and non-destructive modes. Both ends of the production line may be automated, e.g., by robots which load and offload needles prior to and after swaging, respectively. The apparatus is capable of forming double armed sutures by using a rotatable mount for the suture insertion gripper and a secondary, loop gripper.Type: GrantFiled: January 30, 2004Date of Patent: March 6, 2007Assignee: Ethicon, Inc.Inventors: Timothy P. Patent number: RE39624Abstract: A feed head has a delivery path along which nuts are fed to a pressing station in the feed head, the pressing station having a pressing die which is reciprocated transversely to the delivery path under the action of a press to fasten a nut to a sheet metal member. A cam is provided to reciprocate the pressing die manually to facilitate clearance of blockages in the feed head, and also to hold the pressing die in its lowered position to allow operation of the press without operating the die. A sensor for detecting nuts at the pressing station is positioned on the end of the delivery path, enabling a narrower feed head design. An electrical coupling and nut delivery tube are integrated to facilitate connection in confined spaces.Type: GrantFiled: January 15, 2004Date of Patent: May 15, 2007Assignee: BAS Components LimitedInventor: Ian Gaskin
