  • Patent number: 5040399
Abstract: A method of fabricating box section from steel with walls of non-uniform thickness along its periphery. A starting product in the form of round tubing with a wall that is uniformly thick along its circumference is manufactured and rolled into box section with walls of uniform thickness along its periphery. A temperature difference is generated between the flange midsections and the web midsections of the box section with walls of uniform thickness along its periphery such that the flange midsections are at least 600.degree. C. hotter than the web midsections, the flanges are edged and thickened peripendicular to the longitudinal axis of the box section, with the edge length being shortened, by rollers, and the box section is finally cooled with air and/or water subject to standardization conditions.

  • Patent number: 4999903
Abstract: A process for producing multi-layer composite tubes involves extruding an inner plastic tube prior to forming a metallic tube around the inner plastic tube which is subsequently covered with an outer plastic layer. The metallic tube is initially formed to have an inner diameter which is substantially greater than the outer diameter of the inner plastic tube. Subsequent to welding to seal the metallic sheet into the form of a tube, the excess diameter of the metallic tube is reduced in a manner which avoids stretching or elongating the tube. Adhesive coatings can be applied between the various constituent layers of tubes, and a mesh can be interposed between the metallic tube and the outer plastic layer.

  • Patent number: 4831708
Abstract: In a method for producing a clad plate by rolling an improvement comprises: a base material, a cladding material, and a cover material overlaid one on another to form a multi-layer structure, and after cleaning joining surfaces of the materials, the cover material is welded to the base material along the periphery thereof, thereby sealing and fixing the cladding material between the cover material and base material, and forming a multi-layer assembly. A member for preventing warp is overlaid over an outer surface of the cover material via a separating agent, and the member for preventing warp and the base material are fixed to one another by welding along the periphery thereof, thereby forming a blank for rolling. The blank is hot-rolled, a rolled article is cut along its periphery to separate the means for preventing warp, and subsequently, the cover material is removed by machining, grinding, or pickling.

The converter element may be a fan-folded or accordion folded thin metal strip or a spirally wound element which carries strongly adhered to the surface thereof a catalyst, e.g. a noble or precious metal catalyst such as platinum and/or palladium and/or rhodium. The metal strip entering the process is an aluminum coated ferritic ribbon between 0.001 and 0.003 inches thick, and 1 inch to 30 inches wide. The strip is preferably annealed and perforated at predetermined intervals. Thereafter, the strip is corrugated and given a washcoat of a refractory metal oxide which is calcined onto the surface. • Patent number: 4085490
Abstract: A rolled steel oil control piston ring for internal combustion engines is of generally U-shaped cross section with a pair of opposed rigid sidewalls projecting inwardly of the ring from a central peripheral wall thereof. A pair of flat-faced solid scraper rims formed by closed pleats rolled from the peripheral wall extend outwardly of the ring. The ring is made by rolling flat strip steel stock through a series of profiled rollers by guiding the edges of the stock without deforming the same, while taking up dimensional variations of the stock by displacement of the central portion of the strip. Pleats are formed in the central portion by the profiled rollers and the pleats are closed on themselves to provide the solid scraper rims. An extrusion-like profile-reducing rolling step provides dimensional accuracy to the finished strip which is then punched to provide the vent openings in the peripheral wall, and coiled and cut to form individual piston rings.
