Standby Source Patents (Class 290/30A)
  • Patent number: 6133716
Abstract: An uninterrupted power supply (UPS) system provides power to an electrical load when utility line power fails. When the utility line power is normal a synchronous dynamo serves as a motor, and a first variable-ratio transmission arrangement is combined with a differential gear box to drive a flywheel with very low losses. When the utility line power fails, further variable-ratio transmission components are activated to assist the first transmission in conducting power from the flywheel to the dynamo. The dynamo now acts as a generator to supply power to the load. The invention is characterized by high standby efficiency and by a capability to run the flywheel down to a very low speed before it is unable to continue driving the dynamo.

  • Patent number: 6023134
Abstract: A bi-directional power conversion system interconnects hydraulic and electrical power systems on-board a vehicle such as an air-craft, whereby the power conversion system can selectively convert available electrical power to needed hydraulic power or vice versa. The power conversion system includes a hydraulic machine (15) connected to the hydraulic system (10) of the vehicle, an electrical machine (20) connected to the electrical system (3) of the vehicle through a power converter and control unit (22), a rotational drive shaft (14) mechanically interconnecting the hydraulic machine (15) and the electrical machine (20), and a priority and safety control unit (26) that controls the operation of the system.

  • Patent number: 4460834
Abstract: The present device is power system for providing an uninterruptible power supply to an external load comprising a flywheel generator, a first motor, a standby generator, and a transfer controller. The flywheel generator is adapted to supply energy to the external load. The first motor is drivingly connected to the flywheel generator. The first motor is adapted to be connected to a source of power external to the power system. The standby generator is electrically connected to the first motor. A standby motor is drivingly connected to the standby generator. The transfer controller is adapted to switchably interconnect the first motor to the source of power and to interconnect the standby generator to the first motor. The flywheel generator comprises a flywheel having a vertical axis, a shaft connected to the flywheel, and a synchronous A.C. generator arranged about the shaft. The standby motor is a diesel engine having an electric starter.

  • Patent number: 4338524
Abstract: A drive unit for a compressor which is used in a heat pump. The drive unit includes a fuel-injection internal combustion engine which is coupled with the compressor and a starter associated with said engine and is fed from multiphase electric power supply lines. The starter is connected to the electric power supply by means of a switch. The starter is constructed as an electromagnetic drive motor having a stator and a rotor secured to the engine crankshaft and serving at least partly as a flywheel. The coil windings on the stator are fed current from the power source.
