Patent number: 7388300Abstract: A starter-generator system is configured to be operable at multiple variable frequencies. The starter-generator includes a rotor and a stator. The rotor is configured to rotate and has a single main field winding wound thereon. The stator has at least a first stator winding set and second stator winding set independently wound thereon. Upon electrical excitation and rotation of the rotor the starter-generator supplies electrical power from each of the stator winding sets at different frequencies. Also, upon electrically exciting one or both of the stator winding sets with appropriate AC power, the rotor will rotate and generate a starting torque.Type: GrantFiled: September 20, 2006Date of Patent: June 17, 2008Assignee: Honeywell International, Inc.Inventors: Cristian E. Patent number: 6930430Abstract: A starter for an internal combustion engine is provided which includes a pair of angular contact ball bearings used to support an armature shaft. The bearings are disposed close to opposed ends of a core of an armature. The core has disposed thereon coils which define a commutator on one of the ends of the core. One of the bearings is disposed within an inner periphery of the commutator. This structure results in a decreased interval between the bearings, thus ensuring stability in supporting the armature shaft during rotation, which results in decreased mechanical vibrations, magnetic noises, and wear of the bearings.Type: GrantFiled: October 16, 2003Date of Patent: August 16, 2005Assignee: Denso CorporationInventors: Tsutomu Shiga, Masami Niimi

Patent number: 5907204Abstract: In a starter, a power supply terminal connected to a solenoid coil of a magnet switch and connectable to a starter external circuit is provided on an end cover. The power supply terminal includes a terminal metal member, a bimetal which interrupts electric conduction between the solenoid coil and the terminal metal member at the time of temperature rise above a predetermined temperature, and a casing contacting a foot part of the terminal metal member and encasing the bimetal therein. The bimetal responds to each of the excessive heating of the terminal metal member and excessive energization current to interrupt the conduction. In case of a single axis-type starter, the power supply terminal is provided on a recess so that the terminal metal member does not extend axially beyond the rear end face of the end cover.Type: GrantFiled: April 3, 1997Date of Patent: May 25, 1999Assignee: Denso CorporationInventors: Keiichi Matsushima, Masami Niimi, Tsutomu Shiga

Patent number: 4093869Abstract: Method and apparatus for accelerating a large inertia load from rest to a predetermined speed of rotation by means of a synchronous dynamoelectric machine. A synchronous dynamoelectric machine, such as a turbine generator, which is mechanically coupled to a gas turbine prime mover, is started synchronously to bring the gas turbine up to a speed which exceeds its stall speed under load. The rotor field winding of the synchronous dynamoelectric machine is connected to receive direct current excitation from a rotatable rectifier assembly of a brushless exciter. During starting, a quadrature axis winding disposed around the stator of the brushless exciter is energized by single phase alternating current. Alternating current excitation is induced by transformer action within the rotor armature winding of the exciter and is applied to the rotor field winding after being rectified by the rotatable rectifier assembly.Type: GrantFiled: April 13, 1976Date of Patent: June 6, 1978Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventors: Arthur H.
