Abstract: The invention pertains to energy production by capturing simultaneously water potential (surface height differences due to waves) and kinetic (flow of water due to e.g. waves, tide or streams) energy. The plant can have tidal compensation (2, 3, 22, 23) to avoid energy flux streaming over the plant in high tide, and directional stabilizing arrangement to turn it automatically parallel to wave crests. Surfaces capturing energy from flow have optimized movements to follow speed of water in different depths. Also energy conservation to filter output ripple can be arranged with twin-phase fluid accumulators (51, 55).

Abstract: The present invention describes a floating yawing spar buoy current/tidal turbine. The spar includes a spreader above the rotor(s) with the spreader tips connected to fore and aft cable yokes that transition to opposing mooring lines connected to anchors on the seabed. The spreader comprises a yaw motor, which drives gears that engage with a ring gear fixed to the outer perimeter of the spar. Flow direction sensors activate the yaw motor for automatic yaw adjustments of the spar turbine. As tidal direction changes, the entire spar and turbine are yawed to maintain the rotor plane facing the tidal flow. The bottom end of the spar extends to approximately the bottom sweep of the rotor plane and contains a winched vertical mooring line, extending to the seabed and attached to a gravity or suction pile anchor. The turbine drive train can be accessed for servicing from the surface via hatches and ladders within the spar to enter the drive train and generating system vessel.

  • Patent number: 9458819
Abstract: A wave energy converter located on the seabed extracts the potential energy in a wave transiting over the wave energy converter. The converter includes a vessel arranged so that its longitudinal axis is located near seabed so that an upstream opening near one end sits below the crest of the wave when and a downstream opening near the other end sits below the trough of the wave. Repetitive waves flowing over the converter cause a cyclic difference in the weight of the water above the openings. This cyclic weight differential in turn creates a horizontal cyclic force acting on the piston, which in turn acts on a hydraulic cylinder to create a high-pressure hydraulic fluid. A vertical embodiment operating on similar principles is also disclosed.

Abstract: A method for converting the energy of water waves into electricity by means of a wave power plant, which comprises a floating body (1), a rotator (3) which is supported on the body and rotates around a rotator shaft (2) which is on average vertical, a gyro (5) which rotates around a gyro shaft (4) which is on average horizontal, the gyro and the gyro shaft rotating with the rotator around the rotator shaft (2), and at least one generator (6), which is connected to rotate together with the gyro or the rotator. By means of the rotator's mass (M) is produced a moment rotating the rotator on the one hand by means of the inclination moment generated by the inclination of the body and gravitation, and on the other hand by means of the acceleration moment generated by the horizontal acceleration of the rotator shaft (2). The inclination and acceleration are caused by directing the internal flows of the wave at the submerged part of the body (1).

Abstract: Apparatus for converting wave motion on a body of water into electrical power includes an electrical power generating system. The system includes a floatable housing. An electrical power generating unit is disposed within the floatable housing. The electrical power generating unit includes two spaced apart wheels which are connected by a drive element, and at least one generator for generating electrical power. A weight is connected to the drive element. When the system is tilted by wave motion, the weight moves toward the lower wheel, thereby turning the wheels and generator(s) and creating electrical power. In an embodiment, a plurality of systems are connected by connectors to form a power generating array.

  • Patent number: 9419545
Abstract: A system is disclosed in which ocean wave power compresses smart electro-active polymers (EAP) material. Dielectric elastomers (DE) convert ocean wave power pressure into electrical current. Advantageously, DE has a very high power density and elasticity. The resultant electrical power is directly used to operate an electric motor of a boat screw propeller or stored in a lithium-ion battery for any other use. The mechanical work produced by the movement of ocean waves can also be transformed into electrical current via a crank shaft and a dynamo using very strong magnets or neodymium magnets that are made of a combination of neodymium, iron, and boron (NdFeB). An underwater and above water screw propeller propagates the boat at high speed across the ocean. Electrical power produced on board during port parking or unused energy is connected to a transformer or supplied for recharging electrical vehicles or port lighting.

  • Patent number: 9309860
Abstract: Several embodiments of a device for economically harvesting wave energy are disclosed. A sealed vessel for air storage, the spar buoy, is mostly submerged under water is also used as an inertial body that surface floats move relative to. The spar buoy may take many geometrical forms, but all have a stem that is above the water surface. Piston pumps are placed at the top of the stem. The pump has a gearing reduction to optimize the rotational motion of the pump drive shaft. Small angular motion at the drive shaft results in multiple cycles of linear reciprocal motion of the piston. Various mechanisms could convert the relative motion between the floats and the spar buoy to a rotational motion of the shaft. The compressed air generated by the pump is stored in the spar buoy and regenerated as electrical energy by expanding the compressed air in a turbine.
