Abstract: A system and method for generating electric power includes a barge with a frame mounted thereon. A paddlewheel is rotationally mounted on one end of the barge to provide rotational torque to a first transmission. The first transmission drives a hydraulic pump for pumping hydraulic fluid to a hydraulic motor. The hydraulic motor drives a second transmission which is operable to drive an electric generator for generating electricity. During operation, the force of naturally flowing water turns the paddlewheel. This in turn provides rotational power to drive the transmissions, hydraulic pump and hydraulic motor. The frame may further be divided into two hingedly connected portions. One portion of the frame may be rotated out of the water to control the turning of the paddlewheel as well as perform maintenance on the paddlewheel.

Abstract: The invention relates to a wave-power unit for the production of electric power. It comprises a floating body arranged for floating on the sea and an electric linear generator with a stator (5) and a reciprocating translator (6). The stator (5) is arranged to be anchored in the bed of a sea and the translator (6) is connected to the floating body by connection means, The translator (6) is journalled in a plurality of roiling elements (15) such that a circumferential gap (14) is formed between the stator and the translator. According to the invention each rolling element (15) has an elasticity that is low enough to meet the condition that a change in the width (d) of the gap results in a change in the total force from the roiling elements (15) that is larger than the total magnet forces on the translator resulting from the change in width (d). The invention also relates to a use of the invented wave-power unit.

  • Patent number: 8471397
Abstract: Floating device for harnessing swell energy by lateral overflow, said device being formed by hulls which converge in plan view and have a variable freeboard between which the waves propagate. The convergence produces a gradual increase in the height of the wave as it propagates between the hulls, which, together with the reduction in the freeboard from a particular section of said hulls, gives rise to the lateral overflow of the mass of water of the crest over their rails, which is collected in tanks which are at different heights (in accordance with the reduction in the freeboard) and are connected to the corresponding turbines. The angle of convergence between the hulls can be varied in order to be adapted to the sea state. The harnessing system is supplemented with a connecting closure ramp between the sterns of the hulls in order to collect the water which has previously not managed to overflow the structure.

Abstract: A wave energy electric power generation system has a buoyant body responsive to wave movement and an associated, relatively vertically stationary body, a compressor, a pressure regulator, and an impulse air turbine/generator set. The compressor has a piston that moves reciprocally relative to a cylinder to alternately compress air in opposed chambers. A pressure regulator tank defines a chamber in communication with the compressor for alternately receiving compressed air from opposed compression chambers, a floating piston within the tank applying pressure to compressed air in the chamber, a pressure regulator controlling pressure applied by the piston to the compressed air, and an hydraulic dampening system coupled to the floating piston to restrict unwanted vertical oscillations of the piston, for output of a continuous flow of compressed air at relatively constant pressure.

  • Patent number: 8466575
Abstract: Deployed laterally (broadside to the waves), this power plant hydraulically converts the breadth of waves into electricity. Costly hydraulic motors, generators Etc. need not be duplicated for each unit in series. Depleted waves break gently. Sand put into suspension by the turbulent release of energy from waves crashing onto un-harvested beaches, carried by the alongshore current to calm water, settles and remains. Replenishment is the natural by-product of wave energy conversion, avoiding costly, environmentally intrusive dredging and pumping. At sea, extensions aid energy harvesting from swells. In series, it defends against oil spills Etc. from washing up onto beaches. Free floating, easily removed for maintenance when tourism takes priority over energy, beach replenishment and oil spill protection. When the series is to be transported over long distances at sea, inclined planes can be pivoted 90 degrees enabling the series to be self-propelled by the swells to its new site.

The disclosure also provides a power generation device that includes a water blanket having a plurality of pods arranged in a grid for floating on the surface of a body of water. In one example, ball joints and hydraulic cylinders couple each of the pods to adjacent pods. Motors are coupled to the hydraulic cylinders such that a flow of hydraulic fluid created by expansion and compression of the cylinders due to movement of the pods causes rotational motion in the motor. Generators are coupled to respective motors to generate electricity from the rotational motion of the motors. Power from the ocean blanket can be supplemental with wind turbines, water paddles, water turbines, and solar cells.
