  • Patent number: 8434797
Abstract: A shutter and fastener system comprising a shutter and two or more fastener mechanisms each comprising cooperating latching and anchor devices, one device mounted on an edge portion of the shutter and the other on an adjacent trim portion. The latching device engages the anchor device and exerts a strong pulling force substantially parallel with the surface of the shutter. The anchor device converts a portion of this force to a perpendicular force resulting in firm engagement between the shutter and the trim portion. An installation method comprises the steps of proving a shutter with at least one latching device mounted thereon and a small opening in the shutter aligned with operating means for the device. An anchor device is provided on an adjacent trim portion and the operating means is actuated from inside the shutter though the small opening to secure the shutter in place.

  • Patent number: 4890869
Abstract: A draw latch is provided, of the over-center type, in which the latch has a base, a lever and a catch. The base and lever are pivotally connected to each other, and the catch and lever are pivotally connected to each other. The catch preferably has a lip or hook at its end, for engagement with a member that is to be drawn toward engagement with another member upon which the base is mounted, for drawing those members together, as the lever is moved from an open position to a closed position, through which movements the over-center motion is effected. Dimples or detents are used to provide a resistance to relative motion between the base and the lever on the one hand, and the lever and the catch on the other, through most of the range of their relative movements, but the detents become aligned or nested in one position for assembly of the components under non-frictional conditions, with the detents effecting a spring-like function upon legs of the lever.

  • Patent number: 4501378
Abstract: A latch unit for releasably securing a plastic lid to a tank-like container or for releasably securing another covering over the container. The container may be the tank of an electric vacuum cleaner. There are a plurality of the latch units spaced along the edge of the lid or covering and engageable with a bead around the open end of the tank. Each latch unit includes a cage at the edge of the lid or of the covering and includes a latch element molded of resilient plastic material. One end of the latch element protrudes from the cage and is hand engageable for moving the element between releasing and holding positions. The other end of the element is provided with a hook that engages a cage formation to form a pivot for the element. A normally bowed intermediate section of the element connects opposite ends of the element, and is stressed to provide a biasing force that holds the element mounted to the cage.

  • Patent number: 4270668
Abstract: The disclosure concerns a buckle or latch for maintaining a lid in place on a container, such as a vacuum cleaner tank. The buckle includes a mounting bracket attached to the container. The bracket has a slot spaced down from the lid for receiving a hinge pin. The buckle includes a buckle element with a lower end having a hinge pin thereon which is swivelably held in the slot in the bracket. The buckle element has a hook at its upper end to snap over a detent on the edge flange of the lid. An upwardly facing abutment on the swiveling buckle element and located between the hinge pin and the hook is arranged so that it will engage a downwardly facing abutment on the mounting bracket when the buckle is closed. Upon attempted separation of the lid and container while the buckle is in place, any forces on the buckle are transmitted to the abutment of the buckle and then to the abutment on the mounting bracket and not to the hinge pin.

  • Patent number: 4090744
Abstract: The disclosure shows an arrangement for locking wheel discs, wheel covers or hubcaps to vehicle wheels to prevent theft or accidental removal. The locking element consists of a rod or shaft member which extends through the wheel disc with a head formation at the outside of the wheel disc and a nut at the inside of the wheel disc for retaining the rod against axial movement while permitting rotation thereof. The inner end of the rod is bent more or less at right angles and in assembling the disc with respect to the wheel this terminal portion is disposed along a generally circumferential line with respect to the disc and the wheel and projects through an opening in the wheel proper. After the wheel disc is thus applied the locking rod is rotated so that its terminal inner end engages behind a portion of the web of the wheel structure to lock the disc to the wheel. A pair of diametrically opposite locking devices are employed so that the balance of the wheel is not disturbed and for more secure locking.
