Patent number: 5992916Abstract: A relatively inexpensive and reliable latching mechanism for locking or otherwise securing a tailgate to the cargo area of a vehicle or trailer is provided comprised of a latch plate of unitary construction and a locking pin. The latch plate is further comprised of a mounting base having means for attachment to the vehicle or trailer sidewall and an offset projecting lug having a lanced tab for receiving the locking pin. In a preferred embodiment, the mounting base is attached to the vehicle side wall and the lanced tab projects through a complimentary closed slot in the tailgate and receives the locking pin thereby securing the tailgate between the offset, the projecting lug and the lanced tab. The offset projecting lug creates a space between the vehicle side wall and the projecting lug which traps a portion of the tailgate which forms the closed slot therebetween to add additional strength and stability to the attachment.Type: GrantFiled: February 6, 1998Date of Patent: November 30, 1999Assignee: Reese Products, Inc.Inventors: John J. Patent number: 5857738Abstract: A device is provided which significantly deters the theft of tailgates from pickup trucks. The shaft member of a typical tailgate hinge mechanism is secured by a rotatable cup within the cup fixed to the tailgate. The open slotted sectors on both cups are aligned to allow passage of the shaft member. After passage of the shaft member, the rotatable cup is moved until the open slotted sectors are out of alignment, preventing movement of the shaft member out of the cups. A wall sector is also provided which attaches to the exterior surface of the rotatable cup after the shaft member has been positioned within. It is closely received by the open slotted sector of the used cup which prevents further rotation of the rotatable cup within the fixed cup.Type: GrantFiled: October 21, 1997Date of Patent: January 12, 1999Inventor: Jerry P. Patent number: 5707095Abstract: A tailgate assembly for an automotive vehicle has a tailgate for providing access through an opening in the vehicle when in an open position and for blocking access through the opening when in a closed position. A pair of dual function striker pins, one on each side of the opening, provide a striker shoulder for interaction with a tailgate locking mechanism and a cable shoulder for receiving an end of a tailgate retention cable. A separator between the striker shoulder and the cable shoulder prevents the cable from sliding from the cable shoulder onto the striker shoulder.Type: GrantFiled: April 8, 1996Date of Patent: January 13, 1998Inventors: Martin S. Patent number: 5233849Abstract: A remote control latch assembly includes a fork-bolt and detent style latch carried on the moveable deck lid of a vehicle. A key actuator is spaced from the latch and receives a standard key for unlatching the deck lid from a covered position over the trunk compartment. The key actuator includes a frame attached directly to the moveable deck lid, and a rotor supported in the frame and turned by the key. An involute track is formed in the frame having the rotor as its theoretical base cylinder. A core element operatively extends between the rotor and the latch. A conduit guidably surrounds the core element and includes a flange adjacent a terminal end portion thereof slideably received in the involute track. The angular orientation of the conduit is adjusted relative to the key actuator frame without relative lengthwise movement between the core element and the conduit by sliding the flange in the involute track.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 1992Date of Patent: August 10, 1993Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventor: Anthony G. Patent number: 5183310Abstract: A single T-handle latching mechanism including a center T-handle, a rotor assembly, a right and left swivel connector, a right and left rod rotator, a right and left lock rod with rotator engagement and a latching contoured end, and a right and left engagement latch plate. An approximately 90 degree rotation of the T-handle will extend the lock rods out to the right and left. With this mechanism, the lock rods also rotate about their axis approximately 180 degrees, with the contoured rod end pulling a door closed as its extension proceeds and, finally, at full extension latching the door securely closed in an engagement latch plate against its frame and sealing, not only in its longitudinal axis, but also in its frontal and horizontal axis.Type: GrantFiled: September 4, 1991Date of Patent: February 2, 1993Assignee: Hunter Manufacturing Inc.Inventor: Ernie Shaughnessy

Patent number: 5150934Abstract: Methods and devices for locking the door or flap of a typical pick-up shell closed from the interior of the shell employ a substantially rigid member which is selectively secured to moving parts of the existing latch mechanism to prohibit such moving parts from moving and, to, thereby, selectively prohibit the latch mechanism from unlatching or unlocking the door or flap of the shell. In order to lock the shell door or flap, the substantially rigid member is abutted against and secured to moving parts of the latch mechanism from the interior of the shell. In this manner, a person inside of the shell and pick-up bed may secure the flap or door in a closed position and prohibit the flap or door from being opened by prohibiting movement of the moving parts of the latch mechanism.Type: GrantFiled: May 30, 1991Date of Patent: September 29, 1992Inventor: Steven Grody

Patent number: 5080408Abstract: A latching assembly for the partition gate of livestock trailers allows for the partition gate to be opened from inside the trailer as well as outside the trailer. The outside opening device includes a handle in communication with a latch plate pivotally mounted inside the trailer and which is constantly biased toward a normal lock position adapted to block or retain the swinging edge member of the gate when in a closed position. By pulling on the handle, the plate is displaced toward the trailer wall, against the action of the biasing device, and allows the gate to swing open. An internal handle is rotatably pivotable about its mount on the gate so that when pulled downwardly, causes the latch plate which to be outwardly displaced, out of the way of the gate to allow the gate to swing open.Type: GrantFiled: May 30, 1991Date of Patent: January 14, 1992Inventor: Charles G. McBay

Patent number: 5052729Abstract: The rear horizontal gate or tailgate of a truck is locked in a vertical or horizontal position by a pivoting horizontal bar. Fingers extend fixedly outward from the rear of the bed of a truck. The bar hinges are slit so that in the horizontal position they swing down over and grasp the fingers, holding the tailgate in a locked downward position. The tailgate is placed into an upward position by swinging the bar outward, freeing it from the fingers and raising the gate vertically. The weight of the horizontal bar swings down and the bar latches against the upper surface of the support fingers, holding the tailgate in a locked upward position. The tailgate thus can be locked in one of the two positions, up or down, while the truck is in motion without requiring the use of lock pins, simply by manipulation of the weighted horizontal bar and hinge member.Type: GrantFiled: March 29, 1990Date of Patent: October 1, 1991Inventor: Keith L. Huber
