Patent number: 4758031Abstract: A retractable safety latch is disclosed and includes a base mounting member having perpendicular base walls, a draw bar guide attached to the mounting base member by a hinge, a draw bar having an arcuate hook on one end and an eccentrically positioned oblong hole on the other end slidably mounted on the draw bar guide, a rotatable shaft mounted on the draw bar guide and having an eccentrically mounted pin extending through the oblong hole for driving and retaining the draw bar in the draw bar guide, and a handle having a safety catch pivotably mounted on the rotatable shaft. Between the handle and the rotatable shaft is a spring for the purpose of biasing the handle in one direction with respect to the rotatable shaft so that when the latch is closed, the handle is in contact with the perpendicular base walls and the safety catch catches on one of the perpendicular base walls to prevent the rotatable shaft on which the handle is mounted from rotating and opening the latch.Type: GrantFiled: September 25, 1986Date of Patent: July 19, 1988Assignee: Thermodyne International Ltd.Inventor: Walter C. Patent number: 4747632Abstract: An operating handle mechanism for remotely actuating a closure latch including a handle mounted on a housing by a pivot. A coil spring anchored on the pivot has a first end seated on the housing and a second end seated on the handle to bias the handle to a normal unactuating position. A yieldable plastic button member mounted on the housing projects into the path of movement of the second end of the spring during actuating movement of the handle. During movement of the handle to the actuating position the second end of the spring is carried into engagement with the yieldable plastic button member and is temporarily unseated from the handle, and then snaps past the button member to again seat on the housing during further movement of the handle to the full actuated position, thereby providing a perceptible audible and tactile signal to the operator confirming actuation of the handle and the remote latch actuated thereby.Type: GrantFiled: July 2, 1987Date of Patent: May 31, 1988Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventor: Richard S. Patent number: 4655491Abstract: A two-part latch comprising hinged bail and crank for latching a globe and ring assembly to a fixed housing requires no screws, rivets or similar discrete fastening means. The crank member is a rectangular link formed from a length of resilient wire having its ends butted together at a split near the middle of one side. It is inserted into a captivating recess in which a pair of side ramps and a cut-off center ramp engage opposite faces of the link and cause the portions on each side of the split to twist and snap back after passing beyond the cut-off, whereby the crank is permanently captivated in a hinged attachment.Type: GrantFiled: May 7, 1986Date of Patent: April 7, 1987Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventor: Omer E. Patent number: 4641868Abstract: A recentering device for a shaft is disclosed which includes a return spring means and a recentering spring. The return spring applies a torque which varies directly with the angular displacement of the shaft from the center position over a predetermined range corresponding to the full operating range of the shaft. The recentering spring means applies a torque which varies inversely with the angular displacement of the shaft over the range of displacement. The maximum torque exerted by the recentering spring means is not substantially greater than the maximum torque exerted by the return spring. The torque exerted by each of the springs is a substantially linear function of angular displacement whereby a substantially uniform value of torque tends to return the shaft to its center position and thereby provides accurate recentering when the shaft is released.Type: GrantFiled: August 22, 1984Date of Patent: February 10, 1987Assignee: Computerized Security Systems, Inc.Inventor: William L. Patent number: 4589691Abstract: An improved mortise lock is provided with spring means for independently returning each of the inside and outside lever handles from a rotated operating position. Inside and outside operating hubs are independently rotatably mounted in the case. A retraction lever extends from a pivot past the hubs and into retracting engagement with the tailpiece of the latch bolt. Rotation of one of the operating hubs causes a cam flange thereon to engage the retraction lever to pivot the retraction lever rearward to retract the latch bolt. In one embodiment, a complementary pair of inside and outside hub bias arms are pivotally mounted in the case in side-by-side relation. Each bias arm is biased against its companion hub to return the hub from a rotated lock-operating position. In another embodiment, a single hub bias arm is biased against either the inside or the outside hub.Type: GrantFiled: May 4, 1984Date of Patent: May 20, 1986Assignee: Best Lock CorporationInventors: William R. Patent number: 4569547Abstract: A door handle mount for a door having a rotatable spindle for operating a latch includes a lever handle cantilevered on the spindle and a trim plate having a spring resiliently biasing the spindle to seek a home position. The home position sought by the trim plate spring may be changed by relocating a movable stop. The user selectively biases the home position of the spindle to accommodate the cantilevered weight of the lever handle, to alter the bias from one direction to the other, or to temporarily cancel the bias during installation of the latch mechanism and trim.Type: GrantFiled: February 27, 1984Date of Patent: February 11, 1986Assignee: Baldwin Hardware CorporationInventors: Peter Fayerman, Elwood Shaffer, Paul James, Jr.

Patent number: 4353582Abstract: In a door lock with two case parts disposed in parallel opposed relationship the follower designed as an injection molded synthetic resin part is resilient in itself owing to a supported follower portion, the spring for the spring bolt and for the tumbler being formed by a base structure (42, 42a) and the support for a fitting to be mounted later on being offered by sleeves (14, 15) which are provided above and below the follower both at the lock case bottom and at the inside of the lock cover. The spring-like action of the follower is achieved in that the bent follower leg (26) slidingly bears against an inclined supporting surface of an abutment (27) while curving inwardly or outwardly upon radial movement of the follower.Good fit of the lock in the pocket provided in the door is achieved by ribs (11, 12, 13) on the outer surfaces of the lock case.Type: GrantFiled: March 18, 1980Date of Patent: October 12, 1982Inventor: Willi Eigemeier

Patent number: 4322958Abstract: In a door lock with spring bolt and dead bolt the lock follower body injection molded from thermoplastic synthetic resin is rotatably mounted in the lock case and resilient in itself without bias and without being influenced by any spring force when by radial movement of the lock follower body a plurality of legs extending therefrom bears against retaining pins and develops spring action by bending. The required spring load on the tumbler is effected by the provision of a free leg at the tumbler which rests unbiased against a stop pin and resiliently bends upon actuation by the key. The mounting of a door fitting at the door panel is facilitated by bores through sleeves provided in the lock case. The inexpensive fabrication permitting at the same time a maximum possible degree of dimensional precision is achieved by making both the lock case and the interior parts from thermoplastic synthetic resin containing no plasticizer. Preferably a polyacetal is used for the interior parts.Type: GrantFiled: January 15, 1980Date of Patent: April 6, 1982Inventor: Willi Eigemeier

Patent number: 4216986Abstract: There is disclosed a releasable door stop assembly for a bidirectionally swinging door including a retractable stop member which normally permits opening of the door in one direction, thus acting as a stop against opening of said door in the opposite direction. The stop member is free floating and is spring biased, such that it can be retracted manually to permit opening of the door in the opposite direction. The biasing of the free floating stop member is effected by use of a leaf spring which localizes the applied force limiting same generally to the forward portions of the stop member. As such, upon manual depression, the rearward portion of the free floating stop member moves inwardly easily until a segment thereof bottoms, with the forward portion of said stop member then being rocked forward to retract the stop member entirely.Type: GrantFiled: August 9, 1978Date of Patent: August 12, 1980Assignee: Lawrence Brothers, Inc.Inventors: Delmar McNinch, William K.
