Publication number: 20080174131Abstract: The present invention provides an apparatus and a method for lifting a single joint of pipe. The single joint elevator of the present invention comprises, in one embodiment, a pair of deployable jaws cooperating with a pair of static jaws to secure a pipe within the slot of a generally horseshoe-shaped body. The deployable jaws of the single joint elevator of the present invention may be rotatably deployable or translatably deployable, or both. In one embodiment, each jaw, including the static jaws and the deployable jaws, comprises a pipe slip movably disposed within the jaw to secure a pipe segment within the slot and to self-tighten as the weight of the pipe segment secured within the single joint elevator is transferred to the slips and the jaws.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 19, 2007Publication date: July 24, 2008Inventors: Vernon Joseph Bouligny, Scott Joseph Arceneaux

Patent number: 7311346Abstract: A gripper mechanism (22) suspended in a coiled tubing/wireline in a well serves to releasably hold a downhole tool or other piece of equipment positioned downstream, via a tubular connecting element (10). The gripper mechanism (12) comprises axially, two relative to each other, movable coaxial parts (18, 16), a gripping part (18) designed to grip said connecting element (10) and an actuating part (16) designed to exert a radial clamping effect on the gripping portion (18a) of the gripping part (18) when this is in engagement with said connecting element (10). The clamping effect is due to complimentary conical face on opposite sides of the two parts (16, 18) of the gripper mechanism (12) being forced against each other by the axial displacement of one part (16) relative to the other part (18) in one direction (the upstream/pull-up direction).Type: GrantFiled: September 26, 2001Date of Patent: December 25, 2007Assignee: Bakke Technology ASInventor: Stig Bakke

Patent number: 7296630Abstract: A method and apparatus for raising or lowering a tubular in a well wherein bails are conventionally coupled to elevator ears and locking assemblies secured to the outer sides of the lower bail eyes for remote controlled clamping to nipples integral with and extending from the elevator ears. The locking assemblies contain upper and lower jaws which, by a remotely controlled actuator, move in linear relation to each other and have concave clamping surfaces which join together to form a circular opening for receiving the elevator ear nipples. The nipples have enlarged diameters at their distal ends to prevent removal from the closed jaws. A remotely controlled link spreading mechanism spreads the bails to accommodate an elevator. Elevator ears may contain internal conduits for communication of power and control signals between the suspended elevator and the bails. The passages mate with a remotely actuated connector assembly.Type: GrantFiled: February 25, 2005Date of Patent: November 20, 2007Assignee: Blohm + Voss Repair GmbHInventors: Iwo Severin, Jens Lutzhoeft, Jörn Grotherr

Each elevator has a rear power and control connector and hitch which connect to complementary connectors and hitch located on a table shuttle mechanism by remote actuation. The table shuttle mechanism is driven by an actuator coupled between the shuttle mechanism and table frame which moves an elevator hitched to said shuttle mechanism between well center and standby positions.Type: GrantFiled: February 25, 2005Date of Patent: May 15, 2007Assignee: Blohm + Voss Repair GmbHInventors: Iwo Severin, Jens Lutzhoeft, Jörn Grotherr

Patent number: 7032678Abstract: A U-shaped elevator having no doors is provided with first and second latching mechanisms which when contacted by the tubular to be entrapped within the elevator move from a closed position to an open position and which then return to a closed position as soon as the tubular is entrapped within the elevator. The latching mechanisms have a safety catch which prevents the tubular from being inadvertently removed from the elevator. The safety latch mechanism can only be activated by a handle which is manipulated by hand by personnel working on the derrick utilizing the elevator. The elevator has an open throat to receive tubulars that have couplers or other features with a lower flange surface for lifting a pipe string. The throat access has blocking members that are movable to allow tubulars to move out of the gap unless the blocking members are locked to prevent such movement. The blocking members have latches biased toward a position to immobilize the members.Type: GrantFiled: May 23, 2003Date of Patent: April 25, 2006Assignee: Frank's Casing Crew and Rental Tools, Inc.Inventors: Donald E.
