Abstract: A pallet clamping device is mounted between forks of a material handling vehicle. The device clamps to a stringer of a pallet using a pair of horizontally moveable jaws. The jaws are resiliently forced toward one another for clamping a stringer so that a clamped pallet will not move off the forks. The pivoting and sliding motion of the jaws helps align the jaws with pallets not perfectly aligned with the vehicle. Depression of a foot pedal moves the jaws from a closed position to a latched open position for receiving a pallet stringer. The jaws can also be moved to an unlatched open position for receiving a greater width center stringer. Upon release of the operating device from the unlatched open position, the jaws move toward their closed position.

  • Patent number: 7373704
Abstract: A mechanical lifting mechanism for lifting bodies and/or objects for transport. The lifting mechanism has a pair of spaced vertical arms and a horizontal arm connecting the vertical arms and arranged in an inverted U. The vertical arms are adjustable in length in accordance with the size of the object to be lifted and carry lifting means at the free ends thereof. The lifting mechanism includes a pair of cross arms connected at one end in common at a supporting arm arranged between the vertical arms. The cross arms each have an end pivotably connected to an individual vertical arm for moving the vertical arms outwardly of their vertical positions. The supporting arm extends through the horizontal arm and includes a swivel for coupling to a source for imparting vertical movements to the lifting mechanism.

  • Patent number: 7237815
Abstract: An apparatus for lifting articles. The lifting apparatus may lack mechanization, may be used in conjunction with hoist means, and may operate on, among other things, the principles of leverage, gravity, and friction. The apparatus may include a frame disposable on an article to be lifted and at least two fulcrums distributed generally symmetrically about the frame. At least two lifting arms may be pivotally mounted to a corresponding fulcrum. A central exertion member includes a top surface having one sloped portion for each lifting arm. Upon application of upward force to the exertion member, the exertion member applies force to the upper ends of the lifting arms. The lifting arms then rotate around the corresponding fulcrum to contact the article for lifting.

  • Patent number: 7207612
Abstract: A suspended lifting apparatus for grasping and releasing unwieldy objects. As the apparatus is raised, a hinged mechanism causes the weight of the object being lifted to draw extendable lever arms of the apparatus inward, thereby gripping the object. An articulating scooping mechanism at the bottom of the lever arms helps to grip or cradle the object as it is lifted, ensuring that it maintains a firm grip on the object. An offset mechanism is used to move the lever arms into an open position and hold them in that position before lifting, until the apparatus is in the proper position.

  • Patent number: 7185932
Abstract: A mechanical grasping device for retrieving dropped objects includes a pair of opposing claws and an extension element. The extension element may be either rigid or flexible, and is typically a rope or cord. A trigger plate is positioned between the two claws, and is spring loaded to transmit tension to the claws when the device is in the open position. A pair of protruding tabs at the end of the arms of the trigger plate are received in locking holes in the claws in an open position. When the triggering mechanism is released, the spring tension urges the claws together so that interlocking fingers on the ends of the claws mesh together in a closed position. The object to be retrieved is secured in the grasping device, and the user pulls the object to him using the extension element.

  • Patent number: 7165795
Abstract: A device for use in lifting an air conditioning compressor from an air conditioning unit for servicing or replacement of the compressor. The lifting device is also useful for setting a replacement compressor back into place in an air conditioning unit. It simplifies the task of lifting the compressor by allowing the lifting to be performed at a height that reduces risk of bodily injury and thereby allows the task to be more easily performed. The device is usable by either a single person or by two people if the weight of the particular compressor calls for two people.

  • Publication number: 20040135389
Abstract: A lifting device for lifting manhole tops and manhole covers. The lifting device includes a scissor arrangement consisting of two crossed arms. Each arm includes a gripping assembly for grasping a manhole top and a set of hooks for lifting a manhole cover. One of the arms is offset to provide greater gripping ability for the lifting device and to provide a more compact lifting device. Chains are connected to ends of each arm to allow raising of the lifting device. Raising the lifting device by the chains causes the gripping assemblies to come together horizontally and grip the perimeter of the manhole top or, in the case of the manhole cover, the arms come together to set the hooks into slots on the manhole cover. The weight of the object lifted creates a horizontal gripping force to urge the gripping assemblies into lifting contact with the object.

  • Patent number: 6695372
Abstract: A grapple 1 comprises a sleeve 8 moveable along a shaft 12. The sleeve 7 is joined to an upper attachment 6 for receiving the long-line of a crane, and the shaft 12 is joined to a pivot attachment 13. The sleeve 7 and the pivot attachment 13 are joined to jaws 2 and 3 which can move in a scissor-like fashion. Pushing down on the sleeve 7 causes a rider 9, forming part of a catch rod 8, to move into a series of stepped channels in a block 14 associated with the shaft 12. The rider 9 can be positioned in the channels to lock the jaws 2 and 3 open, and can be subsequently removed from the channels to enable the jaws 2 and 3 to close towards one another.

  • Patent number: 6592320
Abstract: A quick connect/disconnect tank lifting brace which lifts a tank from an overhang of it's top lid or cover. The brace includes a crossbar, preferably adjustable, with pivotal end clamps at opposite ends of the crossbar. A pair of clamp pivoting assemblies are provided. Each clamp pivoting assembly pivots a respective one of the pivotal end clamps between an open position and a closed position and biases the pivotal end clamp to an open position for quick connection and disconnection. Pivoting is accomplished using an actuating rod parallel to the crossbar and coupled to the pair of pivoting assemblies. Articulation of the actuating rod effectuates, in unison, pivoting of each pair of pivot arms via the pivoting assemblies to a closed position. The pivoting assemblies generally utilize a push to close and pull to open motions.
