Excessive Force-responsive Patents (Class 294/86.18)
  • Patent number: 11859466
Abstract: An apparatus and method for creating axial movement of an inner sliding sleeve member on a tool in a downhole environment. The apparatus has keys which mate in a profile on the inner sliding sleeve member, the keys being held in a carrier on a sleeve around an inner mandrel. The inner mandrel includes stops and a lip which can be slid over the keys to retract them for release from the inner sliding sleeve member. By picking up and shifting down the mandrel relative to the sleeve, the apparatus is cycled to jar up, jar down and release. An exercise tool to release a stuck flow tube of a subsurface safety valve is described.

  • Patent number: 11466519
Abstract: A shear coupling includes a first half, a second half, and a shear pin connected therebetween. The connections between the shear pin and the first half and the second half substantially isolate the shear pin from torsional, bending, and compression forces experienced by the first half or the second half. The connections between the shear pin and the first half and the second half transfer tension forces experienced by the first half and the second half to the shear pin from. A tension force above a predetermined threshold causes the shear pin to separate into two pieces that remain connected to the first and second halves.

  • Patent number: 10669799
Abstract: A downhole tool for connecting and selectively disconnecting within a wellbore first and second portions of a downhole tool string from each other. The downhole tool may include a first connector sub connectable with the first portion of the downhole tool string, a second connector sub connectable with the second portion of the downhole tool string, an internal chamber, and a fastener connecting the first and second connector subs. The fastener may fluidly separate the internal chamber into a first chamber portion and a second chamber portion. The first chamber portion may be fluidly connected with a space external to the downhole tool. The downhole tool may be selectively operable to disconnect the first and second connector subs from each other to disconnect the first and second portions of the downhole tool string from each other.

  • Patent number: 9163469
Abstract: A combination tool is delivered to compacted debris above a packer whose plug is to be removed. The shoe or mill is on the lower end of an outer bushing and the grapple or overshot is held within the bushing but away from the shoe so that the shoe can advance into the debris as reverse circulation takes the cuttings up through a mandrel to a debris removal tool. When the shoe lands on the packer the surface personnel can see it on the weight indicator. Weight is then set down to overcome a resisting force of a breakable member such as a shear pin or a spring or both so that the grapple advances to engage the packer plug. Advancing the mandrel relative to the bushing with the shoe at its lower end also releases a torque lug that previously allowed tandem rotation of the mandrel with the bushing.

  • Publication number: 20110163560
Abstract: A downhole tool releasing mechanism which includes a collet for releasably engaging a mandrel of a downhole tool. A retaining band is circumferentially disposed about the fingers of the collet for maintaining engagement of the collet and the mandrel prior to application of a predetermined axially directed force on the releasing mechanism. Upon application of such a force the collet fingers expand, breaking the shear band, the mandrel is released and the downhole tool is disengaged.

  • Patent number: 7249633
Abstract: A bottom hole assembly for use with fracturing or fracing a wellbore using coiled tubing is described having a first packing element and a second packing element on a mandrel. The bottom hole assembly may be run into the wellbore such that the packing elements straddle the zone to be fraced. Also described is a timing mechanism to prevent the closing of dump ports before the bottom hole assembly may be flushed of the sand. A release tool is described that allows an operator to apply combination of force for a given amount of time to the coiled tubing to dislodge a bottom hole assembly without completely releasing the bottom hole assembly. Also disclosed is a collar locator capable of being utilized in a fracing process. Methods of using the above-described components are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6196309
Abstract: An apparatus for pulling objects from a well is described. The apparatus may comprise an elongated housing having an internal chamber. The housing will be connected to a work string such as wireline or coiled tubing. A skirt is attached to the housing, with the skirt having an inner portion. The skirt will contain a first window and a second window, with the first window having a first load shoulder and the second window having a second load shoulder. The apparatus further contains a mandrel disposed within the inner portion of the skirt, and two dog members disposed about the mandrel. The dog member have a first surface that cooperates with the first load shoulder and a second surface that cooperates with the second load shoulder. The dog members distributes a pull force which is exerted on the apparatus to the first and second load shoulder so that the effective tensional strength of the skirt is enhanced. The mandrel will have a second end containing an angled shoulder.
